Adam woke early the next morning, and tried to get up and into the bathroom without waking Kris. He knew they had to have a conversion, but he didn’t know how, and needed some advice first. The question was from whom?
Mrs. Martin had made it clear that she didn’t want Adam discussing sex or his past with Kris alone. How would she feel about this? He didn’t even know what ‘this’ was yet. He decided that he’d just avoid Kris for today, and then talk to Chelsey tonight. She’s easy to talk to, and she’d probably not freak out.
Adam quickly got dressed and went downstairs to breakfast. Mrs. Martin was making pancakes this morning. “Hungry, Adam?”
“Starving”, he said sitting down at the table.
“Good”, she said, putting a plate down in front on him. “Where’s Kris?”
“He was still sleeping.”
Kris, however, was not sleeping. He couldn’t believe that he had done that. He didn’t blame Adam for not wanting to kiss him, but Adam was really mad at him. Kris waited until Adam left their room before he got up and went into the bathroom. He thought about everything, and knew that he needed to talk to someone. He decided that he’d just avoid Adam today. Maybe he’d forget.
Kris finally came down the stairs and saw Adam still eating.
“Morning, sweetie”, Pam walked over to kiss him on the cheek and put a plate of pancakes in front of him. “Well, you two are awfully quiet this morning”, Pam noticed.
“Just a lot going on right now”, Adam said.
Kris just nodded in agreement.
Brent flew down the stairs a few minutes later. “Running late”, he yelled.
“Eat something, Brent”, Pam tried handing him a plate. Instead, he grabbed a couple of pancakes and kept going.
“Bye mom”, he said. “Come on Adam, Rick’s here.”
Adam jumped up and followed Brent out the door. “Come here and kiss me good bye, Adam”, Pam put a finger to her cheek. Adam gave her a peck and was gone.
“Is everything alright, Kris?” Pam sat down at the table with her own breakfast.
Kris just shrugged his shoulders.
“Something happen between you and Adam?”
“NO, why would you ask that?” Kris asked a little too quickly.
“It’s just that you two usually chat away at breakfast, that’s all.”
Kris shook his head, “Everything’s fine, mom.”
“Ok.” Pam decided to drop it for now.
Soon, the bus arrived, and Kris was out the door. “See you after school, sweetie”, Pam called after him.
Pam sat back down at the table with her cup of coffee and enjoyed the peace and quiet.
Today was the big day. The entire school would hear Adam sing. He was a little nervous. Since they had to squeeze the play into one period, they were just doing two small scenes, one group number and Adam’s solo.
The classes began piling into the auditorium.
Adam was not in either of the scenes they were doing that morning, so when he came on the stage all by himself, it was a surprise to most of the kids. Adam stood there for a moment, waiting for the piano intro to start and then he began singing…
When he was finished, the entire school erupted. Cheers and catcalls and whistling was all that Adam could hear. He left the stage practically hyperventilating. Dani ran up to him and gave him a big hug. “You’re a star, Adam. Now, you’ll probably be the most popular kid in school and won’t even talk to me”, she teased.
Adam burst out laughing, “Yeah, if only that were true. I’m now officially a drama geek, so, probably no to the popular thing”, he giggled.
“Whatever”, Dani rolled her eyes.
Meanwhile, all the school was talking about was Adam. When he walked into lunch that afternoon, everyone began clapping, to his horror. Adam blushed and tried to find his friends, quickly.
He was hoping all of the attention would die down by next week. He really just wanted to be Adam.
Chelsey was home from college by the time that Adam got there. She was sitting at the kitchen table with Kris and she was painting his toenails.
“Wow guys, um… what are you doing, Kris?” Adam was trying not to sound shocked.
“What, you let her paint your nails, so I thought it might be fun for me, too.” Kris shrugged, like it was normal for him to have his nails painted.
“Ok then”, Adam said dropping his books and grabbing a drink from the refrigerator.
“So Adam, I heard you absolutely killed it in school today.” Chelsey said between toes.
“How’d you hear that?” Adam looked surprised.
“Oh, I still have my contacts at that school”, she winked. “I can’t wait to see you tonight.”
“I’m glad you’re here, Chels”. Adam gave her a hug. He had grown to love both Kris and Brent, but he really liked having a sister he could talk to about… things.
“So, can I do your makeup for tonight, Adam?” She said excitedly.
“Definitely”, Adam smiled. He really wanted to talk to her alone.
Adam sat at the table while Chelsey finished with Kris’s nails. “Looks really good, Kris.”
“Thanks”, Kris beamed.
“You gonna show Ethan?” Adam smirked. He’s not even sure why he said that, but he saw the look on Kris’s face and wished he hadn’t.
Kris just glared at him with darts in his eyes, feeling tears well up.
Chelsey looked between the two of them and felt the tension. She blew on Kris’s toes to dry the polish and then sat back. “It looks great, Krissy.”
Kris looked at Adam instead of her.
“Sorry, Kris. I didn’t mean anything by that.” Adam tried to apologize.
“I’m going to my room”, Kris announced and left the two of them staring at one another.
“So, what’s going on, Adam?” Chelsey said with raised eyebrows.
“Nothing”, Adam said standing and pulling Chelsey up with him. “Let’s go up to your room so you can help me get ready.”
“So Kris kissed you.”
“Yeah”, Adam said, waiting for her explanation.
“And now you think he’s gay.” She had a look of disinterest.
“Yeah, well, not just because of that.”
“Adam. Do you want to know what I think?”
“Yes”, Adam threw up his arms in frustration.
“I think that you are still new and a little exciting to Kris. He idolizes you and wants to be just like you.”
“Kris is not gay. I picked up on you the first day you were with us. I’ve lived with Kris for years.” She said brushing it off.
“What about all the questions?”
“He just wants to understand you. I really think that’s all it is, Adam.” She said, while applying his eyeliner. “There, you look gorgeous.”
Adam wasn’t buying it… But, he realized that he wasn’t going to convince Chelsey of anything and it would be better off just dropping it. He also realized that if she reacted this way, it would really be a bad idea to bring up the subject to Mrs. Martin. So, he decided that the only person he could really discuss this with was… Dani.
“Thanks, Chelsey.” He kissed her on the cheek and went back to his room where Kris was sitting on the top bunk with his legs hanging down.
“Hey Adam”, Kris said.
“Kris, I’m really sorry, that was a mean crack, earlier.” He walked over to the bunk.
“Can we please talk about what I did to you last night?”
Adam laughed. “You just caught me by surprise, Kris.”
“No, it was more than that. Please tell me.” Kris pleaded with Adam.
“Only if you tell me why you kissed me”, Adam stood his ground.
“I don’t know.”
“Well, I don’t know either then, Kris.”
“Please?” Kris was now begging. “You asked if I was trying to get you kicked out of here. Why would you say that? Is that why you left your last home?”
“Group home, not home”, Adam said, thinking about his last day at Joseph’s and… Bryce. ‘That backstabbing bitch’. “It was never my home.”
They both sat silently for a moment.
“I can’t really tell you what happened, Kris.” He thought about Mrs. Martin and wanted to respect her wishes. “But, I will tell you this. Bryce, one of the other kids at the group home, did something to me, and Joseph found out. He blamed it totally on me and kicked me out. Wouldn’t even listen to me, just told me to leave immediately.”
“Did Bryce kiss you?” Kris asked, interested.
“Yeah, something like that.” Adam hedged.
“Oh. I’m sorry, Adam.” Kris really felt bad.
“Yeah, well I’m not. I wouldn’t have ended up with you then, would I?” Adam ruffled Kris’s hair.
“That’s true.” Kris was smirking at Adam.
Adam decided to let the kiss slip for now. He really wanted to talk to Dani first, and maybe even his therapist.
Dani picked Adam up to drive him back to school. Mrs. Martin, Kris and Chelsey would drive over later and meet Mr. Martin there as well.
Adam jumped in the car. “Wow Adam, you look great. Chelsey must be home”, she giggled.
“Thanks, I think.” Adam thought about how to approach the subject.
“So Dani, I think there is something going on with Kris.”
“What do you mean?”
“He kissed me last night.”
“He what?” If she’d had anything in her mouth at that moment, she would have spit it out.
“Sorry, I probably shouldn’t have just blurted that out.”
“I think that Kris is questioning his sexuality. And, I don’t know if it’s just because I’m there, and he knows that I’m gay, or if he really thinks he might be gay.”
“Look, can we get together tomorrow and talk? I really need to talk to someone about this, and I tried talking to Chelsey, but she blew it off and I just don’t know what to do.” Adam looked visibly upset.
“Sure Adam, no problem”, Dani patted his hand. “We’re almost here, anyway.”
“Don’t tell your brother.” Adam said.
“Why would I tell my brother?”
“Your brother hates fags.” Adam said pointedly.
“That’s a mean thing to say, Adam.”
“Kris told me that Ethan called Brad a faggot at the restaurant last week and then said eww; or something like that.” Adam shrugged.
“I’m gonna beat that kid’s ass.”
“Don’t, really. Just please let it go. Kris would kill me if Ethan found out any of this.”
“Ok, you’re probably right. I just thought that my brother was cooler than that.” Dani shook her head.
“Alright, we’re here. Let’s kill it again tonight.” Dani said, turning off the car. They both climbed out and walked into the school to get ready for their next performance. They had another performance tomorrow afternoon, and then the last one on Sunday.
The Martins, minus Brent, arrived early, Chelsey wanted to get a good seat. Mr. Martin met them in the lobby and they all walked in together. Kris didn’t mind seeing the play again; he really enjoyed seeing Adam up there on stage looking larger than life.
The play began and Kris was mesmerized by Adam, every time he came on stage. Chelsey, even though she had completely dismissed Adam and what he had said earlier, she couldn’t help but think about what Adam had said, and it caused her to watch Kris tonight, watching Adam on stage. She’d glance over and notice his dreamy expression and his eyes. Adam was fantastic, but Kris looked like he was in… ‘No way’, Chelsey tried to dismiss it.
During the intermission, Chelsey chatted with Kris, asking him how he enjoyed it, trying to get some sense of what her little brother was thinking, but Kris was back his normal joking, boy self. ‘Maybe I just imagined it’, and she shrugged it off again.
The second set went along and soon it was time for Adam’s solo. He walked onto the dark stage and stood there, waiting for the music to begin. The spotlight shone on him and he began signing. Chelsey forgot all about Kris while she watched her newest brother slay the audience with his absolutely amazing voice. She didn’t notice Kris staring, mouth open, wiggling in his seat because his pants were getting tight, or trying to hide his erection by the time Adam was finished. The entire audience gave Adam a standing ovation when he was finished. Everyone but Kris. He clapped ferociously, but was too uncomfortable to actually stand up. Chelsey did notice that.
After the play was over, the Martins waited for Adam to finish changing and make his way over to them. They all hugged him. Chelsey was almost in tears. “God Adam, you were amazing”, she said clinging to him. “And I think you might be right”, she whispered in his ear.
They drove to the ice cream parlor and splurged on sundaes. Kris and Adam were back to their chatty bantering selves. All was good.
Kris had a game the next day, but Adam would have to miss it for rehearsal. He felt bad about that, but Kris understood. Kris would miss the play that afternoon too, but they would all go together on Sunday.
Pam and Chelsey would run from Kris’s game to the play. Adam told them they didn’t have to come to every performance, but Mrs. Martin just rolled her eyes and said, “Nonsense, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Chelsey agreed.
When they arrived home that night, it was late. Right to bed for everyone, Mrs. Martin insisted. Kris and Adam didn’t argue. They were both exhausted and each had a lot to think about.
They each climbed into their beds and were asleep almost immediately.
