Finally, the lights went down and the music began…
Amanda couldn’t believe her eyes or her ears. She always knew that boy was special, but Jesus, he was amazing. She couldn’t clap loud enough. Pam looked over at her with tears in her eyes, like she always had during his song, and put her hand in Amanda’s, as if to say ‘thank you’.
They waited in the lobby for Adam to come out. When he saw his entire family, he walked right over, smiling. Then he spotted Amanda. “Oh honey, that was incredible”, Amanda ran up and hugged Adam through her happy tears.
“Amanda, I didn’t know you were coming.” Adam looked over at a grinning Pam Martin. “Thank you for being here.”
“Aw baby, I wouldn’t have missed this for anything. Adam I am so proud of you, do you know that?”
Adam just beamed.
“I had no idea you could sing like that.” She shook her head in amazement.
They walked out to the Martin’s car, Amanda still hugging Adam. “Are you coming home with us?” Adam asked her.
“Oh, no sweetie, I can’t.” Adam looked a little sad.
Pam spoke up then, “Amanda, come for dinner soon… how about next Sunday?”
“It’s a date. I’d love to.”
Adam smiled and gave her a squeeze. “Thanks for coming, it really meant a lot to me”, Adam said shyly.
“Oh sweetie”, was all she said.
Amanda left them at their car and waved goodbye. She knew that Adam was in good hands. She felt really good about Adam and his future.
Adam and Chelsey had made plans to talk that evening, but decided that going out would probably be better than trying to find privacy at home.
“Wow, Conway has a Starbucks?”
“Of course we do”, Chelsey rolled her eyes.
They drove in silence, each having a million questions.
They arrived at Starbucks and Chelsey parked the car. They walked in and stood in line. Adam looked up at the board to help him decide what to order. This was a real treat for him.
Chelsey spoke up first, “Decaf, Venti, no foam Latte”, she said. “Adam?”
“Um, Venti Carmel Macchiatto”, Adam followed.
“Decaf, also”, Chelsey added. Adam gave her a look.
“What? Mom would kill me”.
Adam snorted. “Decaf”, he repeated.
They found a seat away from the counter. “Adam?”
“I’m sorry about the other night. You just sort of freaked me out, you know?”
“Yeah, I know, Chels. It’s ok.”
“So, talk to me about Kris. I love that kid.”
“I know you do you. He’s a great kid.”
“I love you too, Adam. You guys are my brothers”, she gave Adam a squeeze.
“Chels, I have never had a real home before this. I didn’t believe it at first, but you guys are too good to be true, only you are. I love you, too”, Adam said with tears in his eyes.
“Aww.” Chelsey gave him a big hug.
Suddenly, Monte, Longinue and Tommy Joe walked into the Starbucks and got in line. Adam noticed them right away, but he really wanted to talk to Chelsey.
“Friends of yours, Adam?” Chelsey piped up.
“Yeah, they’re the band I play with sometimes.”
“Oh, well, go talk to them.”
“No, that’s ok. I want to talk to you.”
Just then, Monte spotted Adam and poked Longinue in front of him, and then Tommy. After they got their drinks, they walked over to Adam and Chelsey. “Adam, hey man, what’s up?” Monte spoke.
The other two eyed Chelsey. “Who’s this, Adam?” Longinue asked, eyes roaming.
“Really, guys? This is my sister, Chelsey”, he said, rolling his eyes.
“Oh man. Hey, Chelsey. Nice to meet you”, Monte replied.
“Yeah, you too. So you guys are in a band?” Chelsey asked.
“Um, yeah. So Adam, you were amazing the other day. I know that you probably want to be a big Broadway star now, but would you consider playing with us this summer?” Monte looked pleadingly.
“Broadway? Nah.” Adam’s eyes sparkled.
“So, will ya?” Tommy chimed.
“Yeah, I’d love to, guys.” Adam smiled brightly at all three of them.
“Great. Come to my house after school on Monday, ok?”
“Sure, Monte. Thanks. See you then.” Adam watched as his friends walked out and looked back at Chelsey who was grinning like a Cheshire Cat.
“What?” Adam wanted to know.
“Oh, My, God. Adam, you are going to be a rock star. I just know it”, and she sat there beaming at him.
“Whatever, Chels.” Adam rolled his eyes but turned red.
“You don’t even see it, do you?”
Adam started laughing, hysterically. “What?”
“You better promise me, that when you’re famous, you’ll introduce me to Lady Gaga, ok?” Chelsey had a very serious look on her face.
“Yeah ok, after Kris.”
“Kris is a huge fan, he’d kill me if I didn’t introduce him first”, he said, snorting and giggling.
“Kris is a Lady Gaga fan?” Chelsey said straight faced.
“Where the hell have you been?” Adam said still laughing.
“Well, I think there’s a lot about my little brother that I don’t know”, she added solemnly.
Adam told her everything, from all of the questions, and mom walking in on them, to the kiss. Also, the way that Kris used to talk about Ethan on the baseball team. Chelsey told him what she had observed the other night at the play. They both decided that Kris most likely was questioning his sexuality, and that since Adam was the one that Kris was going to, he should just keep being there for him. It might even be a good idea for Adam to begin asking Kris questions. Chelsey would pay more attention to him, but for now, just be an observer. Kris was still really young.
Adam felt so much better about things afterwards. Maybe his purpose for coming to the Martin’s wasn’t just for himself. Maybe he was sent there to help Kris. That was a good feeling. Also, he didn’t feel alone in the matter anymore, like a huge burden had been lifted.
They got home in time for dinner and Kris was asking where they had been. His feelings seemed a little hurt that he wasn’t invited to go with them, but Pam reminded Kris that Adam was still new to the family and it was important for him to spend time alone with each of them, which made Kris feel a little better. Chelsey promised Kris that next week, she’d take them both out. Then she walked over and kissed Kris on the cheek. “I love you, little brother.” Kris beamed at that.
Adam just smiled.
Later that evening when Kris and Adam were in their room, Adam decided to get Kris talking. “So how was your game yesterday, Kris? I’m sorry, I didn’t get a chance to ask you that before”, he said, patting the bed so Kris would sit down next to him.
“Great”, Kris beamed, excited that Adam was interested in him. “I hit a triple way out left field. It went zooming past the third baseman and the outfielder.”
“Wow, that’s great, Kris”. Adam looked lost.
“You don’t know what that means do you?” Kris asked him.
“No, but it must have been good, right?”
“I made it to third base.” Kris shrugged his shoulders.
“See, that’s great, Kris?” Adam playfully shoved his shoulder. “So did your team win?”
“Nah. Ethan choked as pitcher.” Kris smirked.
“That makes you happy?”
“Yeah, he’s usually so full of himself.”
“So, are you still friends?”
“Yeah, but he’s a jerk.”
“What’s this all about anyway, Adam?”
“I was just wondering, that’s all.” Adam let it drop after that. Kris wasn’t going to say anymore.
The weeks passed, baseball season had come to an end, and soon school was out for the summer. Kris turned fourteen in June and they had a party for him. Kris invited his best friend, Cale from next door as well as most of the baseball team, including Ethan. Adam noticed that Kris didn’t look at him the same way anymore. It made him wonder if he was finally figuring things out, or just had lost interest in Ethan.
The Martins had a pool membership at the community swimming club, so the kids would have a place to go for the summer. Brent was a lifeguard, so he would be able to drive Kris and Adam to the pool on most days. Adam wasn’t so sure about that, but Pam insisted that they not just stay at home all day and play video games. They also had the huge park on Lake BeaverFork which they could ride their bikes to during the week.
Later in the summer, the Martins planned their annual trip to Hot Springs Village on Lake Balboa. Mr. Martin’s boss had a couple of properties on the lake and invited the Martins to spend one or two weeks at his beach house each summer. Kris always enjoyed it there, lots to do, and he couldn’t wait to show it all to Adam.
Adam was also spending a lot of time with the Band. They had decided on the name, “The Citizen Vein”. Adam really liked it. He loved singing. The band even started writing songs together with Adam.
Occasionally, Adam would bring Kris to watch them play. They even let Kris jam on the guitar with them, just for fun. Kris loved being with Adam and the band. When he wasn’t playing with them, he’d sit and watch Adam sing. He was amazing, not just his voice, but his body movements. Adam was… sexy. That confused Kris a lot, but for now, he was just glad that Adam was in his life.
Adam and Kris were getting along fabulously for the most part. The questions had subsided, though, making Adam wonder what that meant. It really helped him having Chelsey to talk to, but he worried about Kris, and who he had to talk to, if not Adam. He occasionally would ask Kris questions, but now it was Kris who was hedging. Adam didn’t want to push, so he backed off. Maybe Kris wasn’t gay after all. It wasn’t like Adam was hoping that he was. They were brothers; he just wanted Kris to be happy, like he was…
They both spent a lot of time thinking about each other, just not letting the other one know.
