The alarm went off early and the boys both groaned, remembering that today was the first day of school. Adam was now in eleventh grade and Kris was a ninth grader, just beginning high school. He would have been nervous anyway, but there were so many things that could go wrong today.
Kris had spoken to Ethan a few more times over the summer, and his friend seemed to accept the fact that he was gay. However, he had no idea how the rest of the team would take it. What if they didn’t want to play ball with him anymore?
Allison assured Kris that he had a lot of friends and they would support him, when he was ready. He decided that he was not ready to deal with that today, and would just act normal and hope that no one outted him to the entire school on the first day.
They both got out of bed and did what they did every morning since Adam had gotten out of the hospital. They made out in the bathroom. Kris sitting on the counter with Adam standing between his legs, arms around each other. “God baby, you’re so hot this morning.” Adam breathed.
“I’m really scared, Adam” Kris said through kisses.
“I know, Kris. It’ll be alright. You do what you need to and I’ll be right there when you need me.”
“Thank you, Adam. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Kris decided to ride the bus instead of having Adam drive him, at least for the first few days. Allison was already on the bus, saving a seat for him when Kris stepped inside. He looked around and saw mostly familiar, friendly faces. Then he spotted Allison and made his way over to her. “Kris”, she squealed, hugging her friend.
“Hey Allison.” Kris was visibly nervous.
“Aw honey, it’ll be ok. I’m here if you need me, Kris.”
“Adam said the same thing.” Kris smiled.
“You are the luckiest boy that I know, Kris. Adam is so effin hot.”
“What? You know he is.” She giggled.
“Oh, I know.” Kris blushed.
At that same moment, one of their friends, Lucy sat right next to them, “Ooh, who are we talking about?” she asked.
“Adam”, Allison said without thinking.
“Oh”, Lucy realized at once who they were referring to. “He is so hot. Too bad he’s gay, right?”
“Um yeah, right”, Kris said uncomfortably.
“What? I have no problem with being gay, it’s just that, well, he’s so hot.”
Allison giggled and Kris turned bright red.
“I’m pretty sure that he has a boyfriend”, Allison added as Kris continued turning brighter shades of crimson.
“Damn. Lucky guy”, Lucy paused for a moment. “Hey, he lives with you, right Kris?”
“Um yeah, he does.”
Fortunately, the bus arrived at school, so Kris didn’t have to continue that conversation, but he did mockingly punch Allison in the side for going there and putting him through that.
Kris knew where most of his classes were, since they had gone to the freshman orientation just a few days before. They had taken the bus to school and did a mini run, going to all of their classes and meeting their teachers. It’s something that the school did every year for the new freshman. It made the first day of school so much smoother and without a lot of the first day nerves.
Kris found his home room, easily. To his surprise, Ethan and one other kid from his baseball team were already seated. “Hey Kris”, Ethan called to him.
“Hi Ethan, Kevin”, Kris sat down at the desk next to them.
They chatted about sports and other stuff until the teacher came in to talk about the expectations of home room. The boys snickered in the back and Kris totally forgot to be scared shitless.
Adam had the car, since Brent had decided to go away to school, he wouldn’t need it. Adam was thankful for that. He’d never taken the bus before. Brent’s friends had always picked them up for school. Adam drove to Dani’s house to pick her up along with her brother, Ethan. “You don’t mind, Adam?” Dani asked nervously.
“Of course not; I would have driven Kris too, but he wanted to take the bus.”
“Thanks, Adam. You’re pretty cool, you know that?” Ethan said from the back seat.
“So Ethan, Kris is going to need your support, can you handle that?” Adam asked.
Dani glared back at her brother, daring him to answer wrong.
“Yeah, no problem. I like Kris, he’s a great second baseman; the best. I got his back, Adam. I promise.”
Dani smiled from the front seat. Her baby brother might just turn out right after all.
Adam parked the car in the student parking lot and Adam and Dani walked together into the school, while Ethan found a couple of his friends.
“You’re brother’s alright, Dani.”
“Well, it took a bit of ass kicking from me over the summer, but he’s on the right track now”, she said hugging her friend.
Adam and Dani’s home room was the drama classroom. They were both really excited about this year. The fall play would have auditions soon, but he was really looking forward to the spring musical, he didn’t care what it was, but he wanted a lead.
They settled into their seats with the other advanced drama students. Mrs. Peppering wanted all of her advanced students also in the morning so they could have extra time together. She had big plans this year.
She beamed when Adam walked into the room. “Adam, Dani”, she said enthusiastically. “I’m so glad to see you both.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Peppering”, they both said.
Kris didn’t see Adam at all in the morning, their classes were on opposite ends of the school and they had different lunch periods, however in the afternoon, Adam had chorus and right next to that was Kris’s guitar class. Adam spotted Kris in the hallway and ran up to him and hugged him from behind. At first Kris tightened up, but he realized right away that it was Adam and melted into his brief hug. “Babe, God it’s good to see you, how’s your first day so far?”
“I missed you too. It’s been good. I’ve had classes with friends; Allison is in three of my classes, including this one.”
“I’m glad, baby. Are you taking the bus home or can I drive you? I want to celebrate after school.”
“Ok”, Kris beamed. “I want to make out in the car with you again.”
At that moment Allison walked up. “Hey guys. So, are you open yet?”
“Um, no Allison. No one knows yet.”
“Oh, sorry, I just thought…”
“I can still talk to my brother, can’t I?”
Adam got a funny look on his face. “I’ll see ya later, Kris. Bye Allison.” And he walked away from them and into the chorus room. Dani was already inside. “Hey Adam. Wow, what happened, you look totally bummed.” She showed concern for her friend.
“I just saw Kris outside”, he shrugged his shoulders.
“And, I don’t want to talk about it, alright?” He tried to smile. He wasn’t even sure why he was so upset. Was he expecting Kris to kiss him in the hallway? Of course not, but…
“Tell me, Adam. Right now. You’ll feel better.” She placed her hand on his shoulder.
“He called me his brother to Allison.”
“Oh yeah. “
“Adam, you’ve always been out and very comfortable with it. Kris is scared to death that everyone will hate him or make fun of him.”
“Is he embarrassed of me?” Adam didn’t want to be with someone who was embarrassed of him again.
“Uh, I don’t think so, Adam. He made out with you in a public movie theatre for two hours the other night, where anyone could have seen you. But this, this is school. This is terrifying for him. Once it all comes out, whatever the outcome, it’ll get better. You know that.”
Adam kissed Dani on the cheek. “You always know exactly what to say, Dani. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. I think maybe I need to have a chat with Kris. Is he riding home with us?”
“Yeah, he is.”
“Good. We’re going to the diner after school. Text your mom and let her know.”
“Yes sir, Dani.” Adam laughed at his friend. She really was the best. Bossy, but the best.
After school, Kris walked outside and waited for Adam. He was sort of hurt that Adam walked away from him that way, earlier and didn’t really understand why. He had no idea that he had hurt Adam’s feelings with that comment. He stood there for a few minutes, wondering if somehow he missed him. He started to walk towards the student parking lot when he was Adam running up to him. “Kris”, he shouted. “Wait up.” Kris turned around and melted. He always did whenever he saw his gorgeous boyfriend. ‘Boyfriend, oh God, I called him my brother earlier. No wonder he walked away from me’
“Yeah, Kris?” They started walking towards their car.
“I’m so sorry. I just realized what I said and I didn’t mean anything by that. I know this is hard on you too.”
“It’s ok Kris. I understand, and yeah, I was upset but Dani straightened me out”, he smirked.
“God, I love that woman.”
Adam started laughing, “I do too, Kris.”
They made it to the car where Dani was waiting for them. “What took you slow pokes so long?”, she teased.
They drove to the diner in silence. Well, Dani was staring back and forth at each of them, looking like she was deep in thought or wanting to say something.
“Can I help you back there, Dani?” Kris asked.
“Ok, here’s what I think we need to do.”
“Yes, we, Kris. We are a team.” She cheered.
Kris rolled his eyes. “Ok, what do we need to do?”
“Well, you don’t need to do anything, at least not at first.”
Adam burst out laughing. “Dani, that didn’t even make sense.”
“Go on, Dani”, Kris coaxed.
“Well, it involves Allison and Ethan and maybe another friend, a guy. Is there anyone else that you’d feel comfortably coming out to, privately?”
“What are you getting at?”
“Well who the hell wants to announce to the whole school that they’re gay? No one, right?”
“So, a couple of people know, and they tell everyone.”
“Oh my God, that’s a horribly idea, Dani.” Kris shouted.
“I don’t mean they just go around and tell people, but they talk to your friends that they also know and feel them out. Ethan can talk to the guys and tell them, and make sure that they know he supports you. Get them on your side. Then they’ll either come to you or ignore it, but at least they’ll know.”
“Wow, I don’t know, Dani.”
“It’s kind of brilliant, actually.” Adam peeped from the driver seat.
“Thank you”, she curtsied. “Then once everyone is used to the idea, then you and Adam can start publically dating.”
“I have to think about it.” Kris was rubbing the back of his neck.
“Let’s get something to eat guys, and worry about this later”, Adam said, as he pulled into the diner.
They immediately spotted their friends as they walked inside. “Monte”, Adam called.
“Hey guys”, Monte answered. Tommy and Longinue just waved with food shoved in their mouths. “Sit down.”
They talked about the first day of school. Tommy was also in eleventh grade, but the other two were seniors.
“So Kris, you’re getting really good at playing, you know that?” Tommy spoke up.
“Thanks, Tommy”, Adam answered shyly.
“I mean it, Monte, Kris needs to play with us again.”
“Definitely, Kris. We’d really like that.”
On the way home, they talked more about Dani’s idea and it did sort of make sense. Kris decided that he’d talk to Allison and Ethan first and see what they thought or if they even wanted to get involved. Then he tried to think of one other person to come out to; maybe someone that wouldn’t be so easy. He immediately thought of his friend Charles. He was a big guy, played football. His parents were really religious. No one could be tougher than him. And, if he could get him on his side, then, maybe this would work, but if not, he might be screwed.
