Chapter 6

That evening, Kris and Adam were in their room getting ready for bed.

“You were really good today, Kris”, Adam said.

“Thanks, Adam.”

“Who was that kid you were sitting next to at lunch today? He’s kinda cute.” Adam was prying, trying to get Kris to talk.

“Ethan”, Kris said dreamily. “Wait, what?” Kris realized what he just agreed to. “I don’t think he’s cute. Why would you say that?”

Kris started pacing around the room.

“Chill Kris. Maybe I think he’s cute.” Adam covered.

“Wait, why would you say something like that?”

Adam gave Kris a look.

“What?” He thought for a second. “Oh”.

“Kris, you know that I’m gay.”

Kris just stared at him with wide eyes.

“I thought you all knew that. Chelsey does.”

“Um, I didn’t, um... Is that why you keep saying things like that to me?” Kris was stuttering.

“Yeah, sure.” Adam tried to smooth it over.

“Well, stop it, ok?”

“What, you don’t like gay people?” Adam teased.

“NO, I never said that. I just…”

“Whatever.” Adam shrugged and went into the bathroom.

“Boys! Come down stairs. We’re going to watch a movie”, Mr. Martin called from the bottom of the stairs.

“Adam”, Kris yelled. “Movie night, you coming?” He called into the bathroom.

“We’re making popcorn”, Mrs. Martin chimed in.

Adam came out of the bathroom, a washcloth covering his face. “What’s movie night?”

Kris giggled. “Come on, we’re all going to watch a movie together in the family room. And eat popcorn, too.” Kris said excitedly.

“Really?” Adam said.

“We do this every Saturday night, because the whole family is together.”

Adam had never had any type of a family, let alone family night. “You really like being in this family, don’t you?”   Adam questioned him.

“That’s a weird question. Of course I do.”

Then the two boys bounded down the stairs and joined the rest of the family.

Adam felt himself falling asleep. He was sitting next to Chelsey, and she put her arm around him and let him lean into her shoulder. She felt nice; safe.

Kris was drifting off too. He was between Mr. and Mrs. Martin.

The two parents smiled at each other. This was their family and they loved each and every one of them.

Once the movie was over, Mr. Martin carried Kris up the stairs, and Chelsey tried to wake Adam and help him into his room.

They both stirred for a moment, and then were fast asleep.

Adam had good dreams that night.

The next morning was Sunday. The Martins went to church.

Adam had never been to a church and really didn’t want to go. He knew how most religions frowned on homosexuality and wanted no part of it. However, the Martins insisted, so he went.

He sat there though the service and it was a good message; about loving your neighbor.

After church, they went out for brunch at the Pancake House. The food was really good and Adam enjoyed himself.

“Adam, you order whatever you like, OK sweetie?” Mrs. Martin assured him.

He had eggs with bacon and hash browns with toast. Kris got pancakes, with a chocolate chip and whipped cream face. Kris was such a kid. Adam laughed to himself.

After brunch, they came home. Sundays were a day of rest, so Mr. Martin and Brent were going to watch baseball on TV. Chelsey was in her room doing homework and packing up for school. Mrs. Martin was reading a book and planning meals for the week.

Kris usually joined his dad and brother in the TV room, but he also wanted to talk to Adam. Adam was gay. He said so. So maybe he’d understand the feelings that Kris was having.

Or maybe he’d just want Kris to be like him so he wouldn’t be alone. Kris was conflicted.

Adam however, was letting his jealousy of Kris get the better of him. Kris was a foster kid just like he was, but the Martins loved him like a son. They’d never love him like that, Adam thought.

He was sitting on his bed, putting his new clothes away when Kris came into the room.

“Hi Adam”, Kris spoke walking into their bedroom. He wasn’t sure where to start.

“Kris. Why do you think the Martins never adopted you?” Adam said absentmindedly.

“What?”

“They never adopted you, after all of this time”, Adam shrugged. “Why do you think?”

“I don’t know.” Kris wondered.

“It’s expensive.” Adam added.

Kris looked at Adam with wide eyes. He had never thought about it. They always made him feel part of the family. But, he wasn’t, not really.

“All of the foster families I’ve been with. They’ve only wanted me because of the money they get.”

“They don’t get money for me.”

“Of course they do, Kris. If they adopted you, that money would go away.”

“What do you mean?” Kris said timidly.

“They make money every month for having a foster kid. The state pays them.”

Kris felt tears weld up. Adam started to feel bad, but it was too late. Kris ran out of the room, crying. He tried leaving the house, but Pam caught him. “Kris, baby. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing”, Kris said through tears.

“Nonsense. Kris, please talk to me.”

She saw Adam at the top of the steps with a very guilty look on his face.

“Adam?”

He just looked down the stairs at her.

“What did you say to Kris?”

Well, here it is’, Adam thought,

“He said you don’t love me.”

“Hey, I never said that”, Adam yelled. This always happens. The other kid lies and I’m the one that gets into trouble.

“Kris?”

Kris sniffed and wiped his tears. “He…” pointing at Adam. “He said you only keep me for the money.”

“I didn’t say that either”, Adam was screaming now.

“Well then, Adam. Please come down here and tell me what you did say.” Pam said calmly.

Adam was scared. He thought of running.

“Please, Adam.” Pam tried to sound reassuring.

Adam reluctantly walked down the stairs and the three of them went into the kitchen. Kris was still crying and Adam wished he could run away.

“What is this all about?” Mrs. Martin pointed the question to Adam.

“I asked Kris why you never adopted him. He keeps saying that you treat him like part of the family. Then why didn’t you adopt him?”

“He also said that foster families only take kids for the money.” Kris sobbed.

“Oh boy.”

“Ill pack up and go”, Adam stood up, holding his head down and pouting his lips.

“Adam, SIT!”

That scared him and he sat down. His thought jumped to Bryce and Joseph at the group home. They never believe him.

“First of all, Kris.” Pam looked over at Adam as if to say, ‘You’re next’. “Sweetie, we love you, do you believe that?”

Kris just nodded his head.

“Yes, we get money every month for you though the foster system.”

Kris’s heart just sank.

“Kris.” She walked over to him and lifted his chin to look into his eyes. “We get money to take care of you. That money is to feed you and give you clothes and a good life. We don’t make money off of you. That is not why we took you in.”

Kris looked into her eyes and believed her. He wanted to believe her.

Pam took in a deep breath and began her story. “Several years ago we decided that we wanted to adopt a baby. Chelsey was eight and Brent was six...”

Mrs. Martin had wanted to have another child, but it just wasn’t in the cards. After a few medical issues, she ended up having a hysterectomy and there went any chances for another baby.   They spent almost two years trying to adopt a child, but were unsuccessful.

During that process, their lawyer suggested that they submit their names into the foster program. It was easier to become foster parents and it looked good on their resume as potential adoptive parents.

“…so”, she continued, “We entered into the foster parent program. Most families want babies, but there are so many children out there that need good homes.”

“Anyway, the social worker called us one evening to tell us about a little boy that had survived a car crash, but both of his parents had been killed. They were unable to find any next of kin, so they were looking for a couple to take this child immediately.”

She looked at Kris with heartfelt eyes. “That was you, baby.”

Kris was crying now.

“We took you in and promised to take care of you.”

“Didn’t you ever want to make it permanent?” Adam was now asking.

“Yes, we did. We tried adopting Kris when he was six. We had the same issues as before.   We decided that it would be better for us to keep him as a foster child than to try and adopt him because we could end up losing him altogether.”

She looked back at Kris. “We decided to make you our permanent foster child. We had papers drawn up. It’s not the same as being legally adopted, but… you are ours, Kris.”

She wrapped Kris up in her arms as he sobbed, relieved.

“Now, Adam.”

Adam looked up at her with sad and remorseful eyes. “Do you want me to leave now?”

“No. Do you want to leave, Adam?”

That took him off guard. “No.”

“Good.”

She walked over to where Adam was sitting and put her arms around his shoulders.

“We got another call from the social workers office just a few days ago. They said that there was a fifteen year old boy who really needed a good and stable home. They said you had been through so much.”

Pam searched Adam’s eyes. He stared back at her with wide eyes.

“They also told us your entire history.”

Adam swallowed, waiting for the brush off.

“Do you want to know why we took you in, Adam?”

Adam looked down at the ground, afraid of the answer.

“Not one of us hesitated for even a second. Not one second, Adam.”

Adam looked up at her and then at Kris.

“Kris either”, she added. “I thought about Kris.”

“Oh.” Adam said, shrinking down again.

“I thought about what might have happened to Kris if we had not taken him in. What his life might have turned out like if we had not given him a home.”

She looked at Kris with loving eyes. “How could we deny you that same opportunity?”

Adam was fighting back tears, now.

“Adam, we took you in because you deserve to have a good home. We are going to take care of you and love you. Do you understand me?”

“Um, yes ma’am.”

Mrs. Martin burst out laughing. “How about mom?”

“Mom?”

“Yes, mom.”

“Mom, I’m really sorry.”

“I know, baby. Kris knows that too, right Kris?”

Kris had recovered and was feeling so much better. “Yeah, I know that.” He shoved Adam’s shoulder like Brent always does to him.

The three of them hugged each other tightly as Chelsey walked into the kitchen. “What’s all the hugging for?” She asked.

“Just making sure my boys know that I love them.” Pam answered.

Chelsey smiled and joined the group hug.
