The next morning, the alarm clock went off at 7:00 to ‘Tic Toc’ playing on the radio.
Adam groaned, but reluctantly sat up.
Kris jumped down from the bunk, “I love this song, don’t you, Adam?”
“Yeah, I love Ke$ha.” He was staring at Kris.
“Are you gay, Kris?”
“NO! Why would you say such a thing? That’s not very nice.” Kris was turning bright crimson and he ran into the bathroom and quickly closed the door.
‘Shit, how does he know? He doesn’t know anything’, Kris mumbled to himself, getting washed up and ready for school.
“Hey Kris, I didn’t mean anything, ok?” Adam called to him.
Kris came out of the bathroom and practically ran down stairs, with Adam saying “Sorry, man”, as he left the room.
Adam shrugged his shoulders and went into the bathroom. He tried doing his hair, but they didn’t have any hair products other than Axe hair gel. He laughed to himself. ‘Maybe he’s not gay.’ He did find a brush and did his best to fix his hair.
When Adam came downstairs, Kris was sitting at the table, eating his cereal.
“Good morning, Adam”, Mrs. Martin.
“Morning”, Adam sat down next to Kris and grabbed a box of cereal.
“Sleep well?” She asked.
“Pam, Can I please have some coffee?”
“Coffee?” Kris spat out.
“Adam, you drink coffee?” Pam looked concerned.
“Um, yeah?” Adam looked uncomfortable.
“Well, how about some orange juice this morning.”
“Ok, can I have it with coffee?”
Kris snickered into his bowl.
“So Adam, have you thought about which activities you would like to enroll in?”
“I want you involved in some type of activity.”
“Alright, then. How about something with music? You said last night that you loved music.”
“He can sing”, Kris piped up.
Adam just glared at Kris.
“Really? How about chorus or maybe even drama?”
“Drama? I don’t know, maybe”, he shrugged. Adam had never done any activities before. He had no idea what he’d like to do.
Soon, it was time for Kris to leave for the bus and then Adam and Mrs. Martin drove to the high school to register Adam. Amanda from child services had arranged for his transcripts to be mailed to the new school.
Adam spent the morning getting registered and picking out his classes. Pam suggested chorus and drama again, and since he didn’t have any other ideas, he agreed. He was nervous about starting another new school.
Adam was quiet on the ride home. Pam kept looking over at him.
“Are you alright, sweetie?”
“Adam, I know that you must be feeling overwhelmed. Just take it one day at a time.”
He only nodded.
“Tomorrow is Saturday and Kris has his first baseball game. Would you like to come with us and watch him play?”
“I don’t know, I guess.” He shrugged.
“Then afterwards, we’ll all go out for pizza.” Pam said enthusiastically.
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
Pam just smiled at him.
They drove to the grocery store before heading back home, and Pam had Adam help her with the shopping. She asked him what kinds of foods he liked and let him pick some things out. He enjoyed it, and felt like his opinion mattered.
Adam helped Mrs. Martin put away the groceries and then they chatted for a while. Pam made some coffee, and Adam asked her for a cup, too.
“Adam, kids shouldn’t drink coffee, sweetie.”
“Well, I’m not really a kid anymore, you know. I’ve been on my own.”
“Yes you are, Adam.” Pam looked at him with motherly concern. “Here sweetie, it’s decaf.” She said handing him a cup.
“Thanks”, he said smiling at her.
They heard a car pull up and it was Chelsey home from college for the weekend. She came into the kitchen and hugged her mom. “Hello sweetie.”
“Hi Adam, did you start school today?” She asked.
“No, Monday. I’m registered though.”
“Great”, she said grabbing a cup of coffee and sitting down at the table.
They started chatting about school.
Adam went up to his room a while later, leaving Pam and Chelsey downstairs. He walked around the room looking at all of Kris’s posters and trophy’s. Then he moved into the bathroom and looked at the sparse counter. He wished that he had some cosmetic products. His mom had a ton of stuff, and she always let him use it. She wanted him to be pretty for the men, but he just liked the way it made him feel.
Adam found himself wandering into the hallway bathroom near Chelsey’s room and went inside. He wasn’t doing anything wrong; it was the main bathroom, but still…
He found himself looking through the makeup and hair products and then suddenly, Chelsey appeared in the door. “What are you doing?” She said louder than she meant to.
“I… I’m sorry”, he said dropping the products on the counter. “I didn’t mean to, I just…”
“Adam, it’s ok. I don’t mind, you just have to ask me first, ok?” She smiled at him.
“Ok, I’m sorry.”
“Hey, follow me”, she said grabbing Adam’s hand and dragging him into her room.
He hadn’t see Chelsey’s room yet, it was so girly and glittery. “Wow”, Adam’s eyes bugged at the sight.
“Do you like to wear makeup, Adam?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “Um, yeah”, he said shyly. A little embarrassed.
“Well then, can I fix you up?” She said excitedly.
“Yes”, Adam relaxed and smiled at Chelsey.
“Cool!” ‘It’s going to be so much fun having a gay brother’, she giggled to herself.
Kris came home from school and was sitting in the kitchen having a snack.
Chelsey came down the stairs first with Adam following her. She had fixed up his hair so it was a little spiky. She had also done his eyes in black eyeliner and mascara and a little lip gloss. He looked good, he felt good.
They came into the kitchen to a surprised Kris, who just stared at Adam with his mouth open. Pam turned around and practically choked on her coffee. “What have you done to Adam, Chelsey?”
“Doesn’t he look fantastic?” Chelsey declared.
“Actually, you look great, Adam.” Pam said. “Kris?”
Kris kept staring with wide eyes. “Uh huh”, was all that came out of his mouth.
Adam gave him a questioning look.
Chelsey laughed and gave Adam a hug. “I think you look amazing. Next time, we do your nails.”
“Chelsey, he’s not a doll you can dress up.”
“I don’t mind”, Adam replied.
Brent finally came home while they were all in the kitchen. He saw Adam right away. “Wow dude, you look rock and roll.”
The next morning, the family had breakfast together before Mr. Martin had to go to work. He wanted to get an early start so he could see Kris’s game in the afternoon. He would drop Kris off at the field for practice and then the rest of the family would come later.
Adam came downstairs in long pants and a dress shirt and nice shoes.
Chelsey noticed him first. “Adam, are you going to wear that to the game?
“He looked at down himself and shrugged. “This is all I have to wear.”
“Mom!” Chelsey yelled.
Pam looked at Adam and had a very guilty expression on her face. ‘God, I didn’t even think that he’d need clothes right away.’ She recovered immediately and said, “Adam. We’re going to take you shopping this weekend.”
“No, I’m fine.” Adam looked down at seemed embarrassed.
“Nonsense. The weather is getting warmer, and you’ll need spring and summer clothes. It’s settled.”
She could see that Adam was really uncomfortable.
“Adam, you are part of this family now. If you need anything, you just ask, alright?” Pam put her arms around Adam and hugged him.
“Ok.” Adam nodded hugging her back. “Thank you.” She didn’t see the tear in his eye.
“In the meantime, let’s go up to Brent’s room and see if he has any shorts that will fit you.”
The family arrived minutes before the game was to start. Kris was on the field practicing. He was playing second base. He noticed them right away. They all waved at him and he just blushed and looked away. Although it made him so happy that they came to see him, he didn’t want to show that to his friends.
Adam came too, although he thought he looked like an idiot in Brent’s clothes and his old sneakers. They look good on Brent, but… ‘Not me’.
It was a lovely spring day, and they sat in the stands all together, cheering for Kris. Adam had never been to a baseball game or any type of game. Even though it didn’t really interest him, he enjoyed himself. Brent tried to explain the game to him, but he just nodded and watched.
Whenever Kris came up to bat, he had this little routine he’d do; tap his bat on the ground and then swing it up in the air a couple of times while wiggling his cute little ass. Adam cracked up. “What is he doing?”
“Warming up, they all do it before they swing at the ball.”
“Not like that”, Adam said, shaking his head.
Kris hit the ball and it was a line drive way out center field. He got on first base before the fielder grabbed the ball and threw it back to the pitcher.
Adam perked up. This was a little exciting, for sports.
When the next guy came up to bat, Adam noticed the way that Kris looked at him. ‘Huh’, he thought to himself.
“He’s the pitcher”, Brent said to Adam.
“Oh.” But Adam was too distracted watching Kris.
“You know; the guy that throws the ball over the plate so the batter can hit it.” Adam stared at him blankly.
Just as the pitcher for the other team was about to throw the pitch, Kris started running to second base, sliding into it just before the ball was thrown at his base. Adam stood up and clapped.
“What are you doing?” Brent pushed Adam back down. “It was just a steal.”
“It was really good.” Adam said enthusiastically.
“Well, save the applause for when he runs home.”
“Why would he run home?”
“Home plate”, Brent said, shaking his head.
“Brent, stop”, Pam glared at her son. “Adam’s never seen baseball before.”
“It’s ok, he’s just teaching me”, Adam shrugged it off.
The next hitter slammed the ball towards right field, and Kris took off running and scored the first fun of the game.
The Martin’s all stood up, clapping and cheering for their boy, Adam too.
After the game was over, they drove over to Pizza Hut for lunch with a few of the other families. Kris sat with his friends chatting about the game, while Adam, Brent and Chelsey sat with Mr. and Mrs. Martin. Adam would glance over at Kris every once in a while. He liked the kid, but couldn’t help but be a little jealous.
After lunch, they dropped off Brent and Kris, and then Pam and Chelsey took Adam to the mall to buy some new clothes. He didn’t want them spending too much money, but Mrs. Martin said, “Nonsense”.
They only had one argument about these leather pants that Adam fell in love with at ‘Hot Topic’. “Absolutely not young man, they make you look like a street…” Pam quickly realized what she was about to say and stopped, putting her hand over her mouth. “Totally inappropriate for a high school boy, sweetie”, she finished instead. Chelsey didn’t catch on and just suggested some cool jeans and rock t-shirts instead.
Adam sadly agreed, knowing now that Mrs. Martin knew all about his past. He tried to shake it off, but couldn’t help wondering when he’d screw up and get thrown out again.
