The rest of their Sunday went much smoother. Brent and Kris watched the game on television with their dad and Chelsey pulled Adam into her room because, “I want to paint your nails, can I?” She asked excitedly.
“Black”, he gave her a look like, ‘No way are you painting my nails pink’.
“And just my toes.”
“Aww.” She complained.
“Do you really think it’s a good idea to start a brand new school with painted nails? I’ll get my ass kicked.” Adam said jokingly, but he wasn’t really joking.
“Oh, yeah I guess that’s probably not a good idea, at least for your first week. But next Friday, you’re fingernails are mine”, she grinned.
Adam emerged thirty minutes later with a beautiful black pedicure. She pushed him into the bathroom. “Ok, now your makeup.”
“God Chelsey, what did you do before I got here?” Adam laughed.
“Yeah, those other two are pretty boring.” She leaned over him and applied black and gray eye shadow to give him smoky eyes.
“Shit, if you weren’t my brother, or gay…” She didn’t finish that sentence.
“So, what’s this school like? I know you don’t go there anymore but...” Adam asked curiously.
“Well, it’s Arkansas, so.”
“Great.” He pictures kids in cowboy hats or something.
“What about your last school, Adam? That was in Arkansas, too.”
“That was inner-city Arkansas”, Adam make quotes with his fingers. “This is, well, Redneck Arkansas”.
“No it’s not!” Chelsey fake punched Adam in the arm. “I am not a redneck, Adam.”
“No, not you guys.”
“So what activities did mom persuade you to take at school?”
“Chorus and Drama”, he said.
She looked at him with wide eyes.
“Oh shit, I’m going to get my ass kicked for sure.”
“No you’re not. You’re bigger than most of the boys anyway.”
“Not big as in fat, taller. You look like you can kick some ass, Adam. And that’s what it’s really about anyway; intimidation.”
Adam raised his eyebrows at that.
“Adam you are so cute, that you’ll have the girls eating out of your hands.”
“Until they find out I’m gay.”
“Are you kidding? There are a lot of girls, especially in ‘drama’ that will love having a gay friend. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet a boy there too.”
Adam snickered. “Yeah, I don’t think so. “
“Chelsey, Adam, dinner time.” They heard Mrs. Martin calling from the living room.
“Come on you two.” She said to Brent and Kris who were still watching the game.
They all met in the dining room. “Kris, Adam. Would you two please set the table?” Kris rolled his eyes. “I hate setting the table.” He groaned.
“I want you to show Adam how to do it. We all have chores, Adam.”
“Don’t worry, sweetie. We’ll go easy on you at first”, she winked.
Then the doorbell rang, and Mr. Martin went to answer it.
Adam and Kris finished setting the table and they sat down, waiting for Pam to bring in the meal.
There was someone following behind Mr. Martin and when Adam looked up, he saw...
“Amanda!” Adam shouted.
“Hi sweetie, surprise.”
Adam jumped up to hug her. Then he backed up. ‘Why was she here so soon? Had Mrs. Martin called her after he had said those things to Kris…?’ Adam had a scared expression on his face. “So, why are you here?” He said timidly.
“I came to see how you were doing, Adam. Why?” she asked suspiciously.
“Adam, I called
“Am I leaving with her?” He caught himself saying out loud.
Amanda just gave him a funny look and then glanced over at Pam who just smiled back.
They enjoyed their dinner and kept the conversation light. Adam showed Amanda his pedicure. “Nice, Adam.”
“Chelsey did it.”
“I love having a brother to play with”, she beamed.
“Hey, what are we, chopped liver, Chels?” Brent acted offended.
“Just be glad she didn’t trying to do that to us”, Kris giggled.
“Well, I like it.” Adam piped up.
“So, you start school tomorrow, Adam?” Amanda asked.
“Yeah, I’m a little nervous.”
“You’ll do fine.” She patted his hand, reassuring him.
“I’m going to introduce you to my friends, Adam. We’ll help show you around too.” Brent spoke up.
“Adam’s going to be in chorus and drama.” Pam spoke up.
“Really?” Amanda raised her eyebrow. “Do you sing, Adam?”
Adam shrugged his shoulders, “Yeah, sort of.”
“Don’t be so modest, Adam. He’s amazing.” Brent addressed the group.
Adam just looked at him, wondering how he’d know that.
“The other night in my room, Adam, you were singing to Led Zeppelin.”
“Yeah, he’s really good”, added Kris.
“That’s sounds fantastic, Adam. I want to hear you sometime.”
Adam nodded his head shyly, not really liking all of the attention.
When the meal was over, Amanda stood up, “Well, Pam, Ron, kids. Thank you so much for dinner. I just want to talk to Adam for a few minutes, and then I’ll be heading home.”
Adam looked up nervously. “Come on, sweetie, let’s go and talk in the family room.”
‘Shit, here it is.’
Adam followed her and sat down next to her on the couch.
“So Adam, how have the last couple of days been?”
“Good, I thought.” Adam tried not to look nervous but he must have failed.
“Why do you seem so nervous?” She looked genuinely concerned.
Pam walked into the room. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but maybe I can help.”
Adam began twitching. Pam sat down on the other side of him, and took his hand.
“I think that Adam was feeling a little insecure, which is totally expected. He seems to think that people only take kids in for the money.”
“Adam.” Amanda shook her head.
“It’s ok. It’s understandable, since that had been his previous experience. Anyway, we talked about it, and I thought you felt better, Adam.”
“I did, I do. I just thought that because you called Amanda, you were telling her to take me back.”
“Oh, sweetie, I’d never do that. I told you, you’re part of this family now. Please relax.”
“Adam, Pam had a suggestion the last time I was here. Would you consider going into counseling?”
“Counseling, do you think there’s something wrong with me?”
“No of course not”, Pam spoke up. “But sweetie, you’ve been through so much at such a young age.”
Adam looked from Pam to Amanda.
“And Adam, I think you’ve had people in your life who have made you feel like you are not worth it. That’s a lot to undo.”
“I just keep waiting to screw up and get thrown out. Again.” Adam looked down.
Pam looked at Amanda and she nodded.
“Just think about it. No one will force you, and…” Pam picked up Adam’s chin. “No matter what you decide, we want you here, alright?”
Adam nodded and gave held her tight. “Thanks Pam.”
“I thought I told you to call me mom.”
Adam beamed, “mom.” She saw he had a tear in his eye. She kissed him on the cheek. “Go back into the kitchen and get some dessert, sweetie, and I’ll see Amanda out.”
The women walked out to Amanda’s car. “Well, I didn’t realize all of that.” Pam said.
“I think therapy is a good idea. I’ll get it set up and you try and convince him to go.” Amanda hugged Pam and she got into her car and drove off.
This time, Adam was not staring out of the window. He was having strawberry shortcake at the kitchen table with a giggling Kris while Brent made mustache faces with his whipped cream.
“Ok everyone, finish up and then it’s time to get ready for bed.” Pam said firmly.
She heard a chorus of awe’s from everyone except Adam.
The boys climbed up the stairs, Adam and Kris going in their room, and Brent in his. They both got into their pajamas and went into the bathroom to brush their teeth. Kris noticed that the counter was a little more crowded with Adam’s new products that Pam had bought him.
“You didn’t like my Axe gel?” Kris asked, sounding offended.
“Um, I just wanted my own stuff, that’s all.”
“So Kris, you’re not mad at me, are you?”
“Why would I be mad at you?”
“Because I said those things to you this morning.”
“Oh that. I’m glad you did. I never really wondered before, but it’s really nice to know the answer.”
“Well good.” Adam patted Kris on the head.
The boys finished up in the bathroom and headed to their beds. Shortly after, Mrs. Martin came in to say goodnight to her boys.
She kissed Kris goodnight first this time, telling him that she loved him.
Then she sat on Adam‘s bed and gave him a big hug. “You get a good night sleep. You have a big day tomorrow.”
“Are you nervous?”
“Adam!” she exclaimed.
“Sorry, I mean, yes.”
“Well, we’ll work on your language later. You son, are stuck with us; no matter what. I don’t know what else to say, Adam. I know that it will take time for you to trust us, I know that.”
Adam was quiet. He was feeling guilty. They were being so nice to him and he wanted to believe that this was real. He really did.
Pam kissed him on his forehead and said goodnight. “I love you, Adam”, she whispered in his ear.
That totally stunned him. He didn’t even know how to register that. No one had ever said that to him before. Not even his own mother, not even his aunt.
Fortunately, at the same time Pam was leaving, Chelsey came into the room.
“Hey guys. I just wanted to say goodbye. I have to leave early in the morning to go back to school, so I probably won’t see you before I leave.” She kissed each of them goodnight. Kris was already asleep.
“Adam, you’re going to kick ass tomorrow at school. Don’t be nervous, ok?”
He chuckled, “Yeah, I’ll try.”
“See you next weekend.” And she was out the door.
Adam went to sleep with happy thoughts that night. Happy and scared to death.
