The week flew by for Adam. He had rehearsals every day after school. The play began Thursday night and would run through the weekend. They were also performing part of the play for the school on Friday morning. Adam was a little nervous. He didn’t have a very big part, but he did have that solo.
Kris stopped asking Adam questions, at least for the time being, but he took to watching him instead. It sort of unnerved Adam a little bit.
“Can I help you, Kris?” he’d say as Kris followed him with his eyes into the bathroom.
“Can I watch you do your hair?”
“Why?” He’d look funny at Kris.
Kris shrugged his shoulders, “You’re really good at it. I like to watch.”
“So how’s Ethan?” Adam asked to change the subject.
“A jerk.” Kris grumbled.
“What? You guys are friends.”
“Yeah, well he doesn’t like faggots.”
“Kris, that’s not a nice word.”
“Not my word, Adam. It’s what he called that guy you were talking to at Pizza Hut last Sunday.”
“Huh, and that bothered you?”
“Well, I didn’t let him know that.” Kris grunted.
“Good for you”, Adam winked and went back to doing his hair. Then he began applying eyeliner.
“Why do you like wearing that stuff?”
“Cause it makes me look hot!” Adam teased.
Kris blushed, because he sort of agreed with him. He hoped that Adam didn’t notice.
Thursday afternoon, Dani dropped Adam home to change. They had to be back at school for opening night at 6:00 sharp. Adam was running around snapping at everyone. “Sorry”.
“It’s ok, Adam.” Pam shoved food in front of him. “Eat. You will feel much better”, she added.
“No I won’t, I’ll puke.”
“Well, you’ll feel worse if you don’t eat, so try.”
Mrs. Martin had bought tickets for every performance. She was so proud of Adam. She had not gotten to hear him sing yet and couldn’t wait. Brent and Kris and Mr. Martin were coming to this evening’s performance.
Kris was giggling at Adam. “What is so funny, Kris”, Adam huffed.
“You’re cute”, he slipped. “Um, I mean funny, being so nervous”, he quickly covered.
Adam was too frantic to really notice so he just kept getting ready. Dani came shortly after to take him back to school. Apparently, Brad was coming to the performance that evening, too. “I think he likes you”, she said once.
“He thinks I’m too young.” Adam corrected.
“Whatever”, Dani brushed it off.
They ran into the school with just minutes to spare. Mrs. Peppering was in the auditorium with the set crew, going over last minute things. Ms. Chortle was going over music with the orchestra.
The costumes were all lined up for each of the actors. Kids were going over scripts one last time. There was an explosion of activity and energy in the room.
“Ok, everyone, places”….
Mrs. Martin finished cleaning up the dishes. They just had a quick dinner in the kitchen. Mr. Martin had come home early from work. He had just missed Adam and was sorry for that. He was very proud of his newest son, too. Brent was upstairs finishing his homework and Kris was sitting at the table, working on his. The only one not here was Chelsey, but she had called Adam that afternoon to wish him luck, and promised that she’d see him the next night.
Soon, it was time to leave for Adam’s play. They all piled in the car and drove to the school. The lobby was crowded with parents and friends of the cast members, waiting for entrance into the auditorium. There were people selling tickets and others waiting to collect tickets.
The Martins got in line at one of the doors with their tickets ready. Ron Martin had brought the video camera. He wanted to tape Adam’s singing performance especially.
Soon, they opened the doors, and the Martins walked down the aisle towards the front and took seats at the center of the stage.
After about thirty five minutes of waiting, the doors were closed and the lights dimmed. The audience got quiet and Mrs. Peppering came onto the stage wearing a black evening dress to introduce the play.
“Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen…”
The audience cheered, the curtain closed and the lights came up. It was the end of the first act and time for a twenty minute intermission. Adam had been in just a couple of scenes, so far. His song was in the second act.
Kris went to the lobby to find the bathroom and saw a couple of kids that he knew.
Mrs. Martin wanted to go backstage and find Adam, but Mr. Martin held her back. “Honey, let him be.”
“I just want him to know we’re here.” She said dabbing her eyes.
“Adam knows we’re here. I saw him look at us the first time he came on stage. I even saw a little smile. He’s fine, Pam.”
“Ok”, she nodded.
Kris came back to his seat just before the lights dimmed again and then announced that the play would resume in just a couple of minutes.
Mr. Martin got his video camera ready to roll.
The play was in full swing. Adam had a few more scenes. Kris was mesmerized. He watched Adam’s every move. He never noticed how graceful he was, or beautiful. Well, he had noticed that, but…
The stage darkened and a lone figure came on Stage. The music began and a single light shone over the figure. It was Adam. He opened his mouth and began singing.
The audience was completely silent during his number. There were a few gasps and a lot of open mouths. It was the most beautiful sound that Kris had ever heard. Mrs. Martin had tears streaming down her face.
When Adam finished his song, the audience erupted. Adam was stunned. He took a small bow, and the next scene began.
The Martins waited in the lobby for Adam to come out. They saw him emerge a few minutes later and ran to him. “Oh sweetie, that was incredible, Adam.” Mrs. Martin said.
“Thanks, mom”, Adam hugged her and the rest of the Martins joined them.
Several people approached Adam to congratulate him. He spent the next twenty minutes shaking hands and saying thank you.
Dani found him and shortly after, Brad found both of them.
“Shit, you can sang mother fu…”
“Brad”, Dani interrupted. “Parents here”, she said through clenched teeth.
“Oh, sorry. No kidding man, you were great.”
“Oh, give me a hug”, he said, pressing himself against Adam, hugging him tightly and then kissed his cheek.
Kris noticed and came right over to Adam and hugged him.
“Kris, I just saw you, man”.
“I know, I just wanted to tell you how great you were again.”
“Thanks”, Adam turned back to his friends and Kris walked away, a little sullen.
“I think you’re little ‘brother’ is jealous, Adam”, Brad said flirtingly.
“No, he’s just, excited or something.” Adam tried to explain.
“Yeah, right. Ok, bitches, see ya’ll later”, and Brad bounced away.
“That was a little weird”, Danielle added.
“I know. He’s been acting a little weird lately.” Adam watched Kris go back to his parents. “I better get back to them. “
“Sure, Adam. I’ll walk over with you.”
“Hey, buddy”, Adam lightly shoulder bumped Kris, who was still sulking.
“I thought Brad was your buddy”, Kris complained.
“Nope, that would be you”, Adam hugged Kris and thanked him for being there. “It really does mean a lot to me.”
Kris relaxed at that, but held Adam a little longer than necessary. “Come on, Kris”, Adam chuckled.
“Oh Dani, you were marvelous, sweetie”, Pam Martin hugged her.
“Thanks, Mrs. Martin”, she beamed.
“Yeah, you were…ok”, Brent teased. Dani punched him in the arm. Then Brent pulled her into a hug. “You know I love you, Dani.”
“Yeah, I know”, she winked.
“Well, see you two in school, tomorrow”, Dani waved goodbye to the Martins. “Adam, you were brilliant”, she blew him a kiss.
“Thanks, Dani. See you tomorrow.”
And with that, the Martin’s left. In the parking lot, Pam walked with Adam, her arm around him. “Oh honey, you were fantastic. I’m so proud of you.”
“Thanks, mom”, Adam beamed and held her close.
They went straight home because it was a school night, but Mr. Martin promised that he’d take them all out for ice cream tomorrow night, when Chelsey was with them. Brent booed at that, because he had made plans with his friends.
Mrs. Martin made them a quick snack, and then sent everyone up to bed. Adam let Kris use the bathroom first, because he had to take all of that stage makeup off his face. Kris was brushing his teeth and opened the bathroom door, inviting Adam inside. He spit out his toothpaste and looked at Adam. He really looked at him.
“What?” Adam stared back, cocking his head.
“Can I ask you a question?” Kris said dreamily.
“I think you just did Kris”, Adam said annoyed. He was really tired and did not want to get in to any discussion with Kris tonight.
Kris put down his toothbrush and walked right up to Adam. He got on his tippy toes and kissed him. Quick and dirty and left Adam totally stunned.
“God, what the hell are you doing Kris? Are you trying to get me kicked out of here?”
Adam reacted badly and Kris panicked. ‘What did I just do?’ “Adam, I’m sorry. I’m sorry”, Kris felt tears streaming down his face. Tears for embarrassing himself, and for making Adam mad at him but mostly for Adam not kissing him back…
