Chapter 2
Adam walked into his apartment and dropped off all of the paperwork from the dog pound as well as the stuff he had purchased from the pet store. He had bought a new collar and leash, a duel dish food bowl, an automatic water dispenser and enough food to last for a least a month. He also bought a few toys that Brad insisted every dog needed, and some rawhide bones and other treats.
He carefully took off the leash/collar that they’d put on him at the pound and snapped on his brand new black leather and studded collar. “You look fierce, boy”, Adam said laughing out loud. Then he attached the new matching leash and took his new dog outside for a nice long walk around the blocks.
Adam found himself talking his knew pet as they walked and it was sort of weird, but kind of nice, too. The little guy walked right along side Adam, stopping to do his business. Adam had gotten one of those leashes with the bags attached for easy cleanup.
After they finished their walk, they walked back up to his apartment and went inside so Adam could introduce his little buddy to his brand new home. He took off the leash and then let him walk around and sniff while he explained things to him, laughing to himself. “I’m talking to a dog”, he said out loud.
Then Adam went to the kitchen to put all of the new stuff away and poured himself a glass of wine and sat on the couch. He called the dog, “Hey boy”, and he jumped up on the couch and placed his head on Adam’s lap. “Aw, that’s a good dog. What am I going to call you?”
They stayed like that all evening, watching television while Adam petted his new friend. He kept trying out different names that he’d come up with but they didn’t quite fit.
“How about a movie?” Adam went to his movie shelf and looked around. Then he spotted it, “Velvet Goldmine? You’re going to love it, it’s my favorite movie. At least you can‘t argue about watching it with me”, he giggled.
Adam put the DVD into the player and sat back down on the couch next to his dog, who now had his head on Adam’s lap.
While the movie played, Adam tried to explain each part. The dog just stared at him, or licked his arm, nudging at him when Adam would stop petting him.
By the end of the movie, Adam looked at the cute brown and while ball cuddled up next to him, licking his leg, now. He glanced at the television screen which was showing a scene with the movie’s main character, “Brian Slade”, and then it hit him. “Slade”, he said. “That’s your name, Slade. I like it”, Adam said, petting Slade on the top of his head. “Do you like that, Slade?” Adam asked him, smiling.
Then Adam took Slade outside one last time before bed.
Slade jumped up on the bed and curled up right next to Adam, while he petted him. Soon, they were both sound asleep.

A few hours later, Adam abruptly woke up to barking and someone nudging him with a cold, wet nose.
“What the fu..?”
“Oh, Slade”, Adam said through the fog of sleep. “Boy, do you need to go out?” The dog wagged his tail and jumped off the bed.
Adam sleepily followed Slade to the front door and grabbed his leash. “You gonna wake me up every morning like this?” Adam said, yawning.
After Slade did his business, Adam crawled back into bed to continue sleeping. When his alarm went off, he hit snooze as long as he could and then jumped out of bed taking a quick shower.
He came out to the kitchen to get breakfast, and Slade was waiting to eat, also. Adam gave him some of the new food that he’d bought the day before and filled up his water dispenser. Then Adam took him outside just to go to the bathroom. Slade, however, wanted a long walk, even though Adam didn’t really have the time. But, Slade had a mind of his own, and pulled Adam down the street. He peed at least six times and pooped too, so Adam decided it was worth it, so he didn’t do it in the apartment.
Adam ran him back the rest of the way, and then he finished getting ready for work, running late at this point.
“Bye Slade. I’ll see you tonight, boy.” Adam kissed him on the top of his head and left the apartment.
“He’ll be fine”, Adam said to himself. He had left him plenty of dry food and water.

Adam had all but forgotten about Slade while he was at work. They were busy all day, which was good. He sold two guitars and some other equipment.
Adam drove home wanting to change first and take Slade out for a short walk before he had to leave again for the studio that evening.
When Adam opened the door to his apartment, Slade was right at the door, wagging his tail. “Hey boy, how was your day?” He asked, rubbing the dog’s head.
Then Slade ran off and came back right away with one of Adam’s shoe’s in his mouth. “What’s this?” He said, taking the shoe from him.
Adam walked Slade quickly around the block, filled up his water, and gave him a little more dry food in his bowl.
Slade didn’t look very happy when Adam left the apartment again.
Hours later when Adam arrived home, that same shoe that Slade had brought him earlier, was chewed up.
“Slade; that was my favorite shoe”, Adam scolded, getting it out of the dog’s mouth. Then, Adam grabbed the leash and took Slade for another walk.
When Adam finally sat down to relax after a very long day, Slade wanted to play. When he wanted to go to bed, Slade wanted to go outside again.
Adam decided to come home during lunch to walk him, but every time he’d leave the dog, it would do something destructive by the time Adam would get home again.
Adam was beginning to realize that Slade was a lot of work. He was, however, enjoying the time in the evenings when he was tired, and Slade met him at the door, tail wagging.
The next few days were a harrowing experience for Adam. They were developing a routine, but Slade would get upset when he was left all day and would leave something for Adam, either chewed up or peed on.
Adam began coming home every day for lunch to walk him, but the manager was getting a little irritated.
He was talking to Brad one evening. “Well, you could just give him back”, Brad suggested.
“No, I love the little guy”, he exclaimed. “And, I really like coming home to him. He is a sweetheart, just a lot more work than I realized.”
Adam decided that maybe he needed some help. He called his mom to see what she might suggest.
“Adam, you need a pet sitter.”
“A pet sitter? Like a babysitter?”
“Exactly like a babysitter. That dog is like a child, and he doesn’t like to be left alone.”
“Tell me about it, he chewed up my favorite shoes.”
Laughing, mom said, “A pet sitter will come to your house a couple of times during the day to walk and play with your pet.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really.”
“Aren’t they expensive?”
“Well, they don’t have to be. I suggest you look up a few and do a little comparing. You’ll find one, sweetie.”
“Thanks mom”, he said, hanging up the phone and calling Slade over to him.
“Would you like someone to play with you during the day when I’m not at home, boy?” Slade just wagged his tail. “I’d say that’s a yes”, Adam chuckled.
That evening, Adam got out the yellow pages and looked up dog sitters. There were actually quite a few. He started on the ones with big ads that described their business. He wrote down some of the numbers to call the next day. One in particular stuck out for him. ‘We love your pet as much as you do’, the ad said. “Yeah, I like that one.”
~~~~
The next day while Adam was on a break, he sat in the back of the store and began making phone calls. He compared prices, and asked a lot of questions. When he called the one with the quote he liked so much, the girl on the other end assured him that the pet sitter would be a really caring
person who loved animals. And, unlike some of the others, he would have the same person each time, so his dog would get to know them and they’d develop a relationship with his dog.
Adamliked that a lot and set up an appointment for the pet sitter to come and meet him and Slade before Adam decided to hire them.
Adam came home directly after work that evening. Their appointment was for seven, so he walked Slade and then quickly made dinner for both of them.
Then, Adam and Slade waited for the pet sitter to arrive. He laughed at how nervous he was.
Right on the dot, he heard the doorbell ring. He opened it and the person of the other side reached out his hand, “Mr. Lambert? I’m Kris Allen, the pet sitter.”
