Chapter 5
Adam didn’t have any session work scheduled that evening, so Kris wasn’t due to come back until the morning. Adam wasn’t sure how he felt about that. He really wanted to see him again, but didn’t want to seem pushy.
He wondered what Kris was doing right now. He decided to call Kris’s cell phone, but changed his mind about five times. Then he heard Brad’s voice in his head, calling Adam an idiot, and ‘call him already’. Adam laughed, “Ok Brad.”
He dialed Kris’s number and it went straight to voicemail. Adam hung up. “I don’t want to leave a message.” He said out loud.
‘Coward’, said the voice in his head. “Fuck you, Brad.”
Kris, meanwhile, was with his last client, just coming back from their walk and he was playing with the dog, so he couldn’t get to his phone in time. Once he was leaving the home, he checked who had called and recognized Adam’s number right away. He had programmed it in, just in case.
‘Adam called me, but didn’t leave a message’, he thought to himself.
Kris called the number and Adam answered right away, “Hello?”
“Adam, it’s Kris; is everything alright?”
“Kris, yeah everything is fine. I was just wondering if you had plans for this evening.”
“Oh, do you have to go to the studio tonight?” Kris tried not to sound disappointed. It never occurred to him that Adam would be calling him for any other reason.
“Um. No, I wanted to take you out to dinner.”
“Dinner?”
“Yeah Kris, ‘out to dinner’; you know, like on a date?”
Kris beamed, even though Adam couldn’t see him through the phone. “Yes!” He said excitedly. “I’d really like that, Adam.”
Adam giggled, “Good. I’ll pick you up at seven?”
“OK.”
Kris hung up the phone and quickly drove home to get ready for his date with Adam. He was still feeling the effects of their afternoon romp, and couldn’t wait to see him again. He had hoped that it wouldn’t be weird now that they’d had sex. But Adam wanted to date him, so that was a really good sign.
He took a shower and then actually spent time on his hair, and getting dressed. Once he knew that he looked good enough; he went into the kitchen and grabbed a beer to relax. Then he called his best friend, Katy.
“Hi Kris, how have been, sweetie?”
“Really good, Katy”, he said, smiling through the phone.
“Well you sound happy. Have you met someone?”
“Wow, you can tell that over the phone?”
“Oh my God, who is he, Kris?”
“Well, he’s a client.”
He heard the silence on the other end of the phone and it was deafening.
“What kind of client, Kris?”
“Katy!” He yelled into the phone. “I’m a pet sitter. He just bought a new dog, and I’ve been caring for it.”
“Oh, Thank God. I thought maybe you…”
“Really?”
Katy giggled. “No not really, Kris. I was just teasing you. So, what’s his name?”
They talked for a while. Kris told her all about Adam and his dog. He just left out the afternoon rendezvous; she didn’t need all of the gory details.
He hung up the phone with Katy and just a few minutes later, he got a text. It was from Adam and at first he thought he was cancelling their date. Then he read the text, ‘Hi, it’s Adam. Where to do live? lol’
Kris laughed, very relieved and then texted Adam his address. Then he sat on the couch and nervously waited for Adam to arrive.
~~~~
Adam hung up with Kris, happy that he’d had the courage to make the call and delirious that Kris had said yes. He left the music store, thinking about what he was going to wear the entire way home.
He also showered and spent an hour doing his hair and just a little eyeliner. Adam hardly ever went completely without makeup. He put on the tightest black jeans that he had and his favorite t-shirt with a leather jacket.
Once he was satisfied with his look, he grabbed his keys and got into the car. He started the engine and was just getting ready to back out of his parking space and he realized he never got Kris’s address. So he sat in the car and texted Kris.
Just a few moments later, he received a text back with his address.
Smiling, he took off to Kris’s apartment.
~~~~
Adam parked his car and walked up to Kris’s door. He stood there for a moment, and then knocked on the door.
He heard some rustling and then footsteps. Just a moment later, the door opened and Kris was standing there, looking totally gorgeous, smiling.
“Adam.”
“Hi Kris.”
They were tentative, not sure of what to do. This was their first date, but they’d already had sex.
“Um, you want to come in?”
“Sure, thanks.” Adam walked in and gave Kris a quick kiss across his lips, “Missed you.”
“Yeah, me too; that was nice”, Kris said dreamily.
Kris leaned in closer to Adam and put his hands around the taller man’s waist and reached up to kiss him again. They stood in the front hall making out for several minutes, getting totally turned on. Adam had Kris pressed up against the wall, controlling the kiss, probing his tongue all around Kris’s mouth, causing Kris to moan into him.
“Adam.” Kris panted.
“Dinner”, Adam said, pulling himself away from Kris, grinning.
“Dinner?”
“Yeah, our date, remember?”
Kris giggled, “Oh yeah”, as they left Kris’s apartment, holding hands.
Adam held the car door open for Kris, and then walked around to the driver’s side. “I hope you don’t mind, I made a reservation at my favorite restaurant.”
“No, I don’t mind. You are sort of toppy, aren’t you?” Kris teased.
Adam shot him a look and saw Kris grinning, “Yeah, I guess I am.”
“I really don’t mind. I like it.” Kris put his hand onto Adam’s and settled in to his seat, while Adam fiddled with the radio, butterfly’s doing flip flops in his stomach. He hadn’t felt this way in a really long time.
~~~~
Adam parked the car and walked around to open the door for Kris again. This time, he stood him up and pressed him against his car. “I really like you, Kris. I want you to know that.”
“I really like you too, Adam.” And Kris pulled Adam into him, letting Adam kiss him into the car.
“Hungry?”
“Yeah, want to go back to my place?” Kris said without thinking.
Adam stood there staring at Kris. “Dinner first, babe.”
“Oh God, you must think I’m a total slut. I’m not; it’s just you make me… um… fuck, never mind.”
Adam laughed, grabbing Kris’s hand and they walked into the restaurant. The hostess recognized Adam immediately and led them to their table; a quiet one in the back of the restaurant. Their waiter came right over and Adam ordered their drinks. Adam explained to Kris that he knew the owner and they always treated him really well here.
“You know the owner of this place?” Kris said in awe. “It’s gorgeous.”
“Yeah, it’s pretty well known. A lot of celebrities come here.” Adam said, nonchalantly.
Adam ordered for both he and Kris and they sat and talked while they sipped on their cocktails, waiting for their dinner.
Adam told Kris about being an assistant manager at the music store and Kris mentioned that he played guitar.
They talked about different artists they liked and styles of music. Adam told him about trying to get a record deal, and doing the session work at the studio.
“It’s really hard to get a recording contract; especially if you’re openly gay.” Adam said, sadly.
“Yeah, I know. I came out here to LA for the same reason.
“You sing, Kris?”
“Sort of, I play guitar and piano, too.”
“I want to hear you play sometime”, Adam said, sincerely.
“And I want to hear you sing.”
Adam asked Kris about where he came from. Kris told him about growing up in Conway, Arkansas. “You think being gay here is difficult, trying doing it in a small southern town.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Kris.”
“No, don’t be. I had friends, and my parents were as understanding as could be expected, but I just didn’t fit in there any longer. So, I packed up my guitar one day and drove out here.”
“So how did you get into pet sitting?”
“I worked at the pet shop in Conway for a few years through high school and then afterwards, I started a pet sitting business with a friend of mine.”
“Wow, really?”
“Yeah, we did ok, but it’s funny. Once people find out your gay, they don’t want you watching their pets.” He laughed, a little bitterness creeping through the humor.
“So you came out here that’s the only job you could get?”
Kris looked at him funnily, “No, I really like pet sitting.”
“I didn’t mean that how it sounded.” Adam said apologetically, silently berating himself.
“It’s ok; it’s not like working in a music store or anything.” Kris replied sarcastically.
They both laughed. “So, we both need new careers.” Adam said, clinking his glass into Kris’s. “Cheers.”
Dinner arrived and it was amazing. The waiter first brought lobster Bisque soup with a mixed green salad, oil and vinegar on the side. “Their garlic vinaigrette is to die for, but I didn’t think we needed garlic breath”, Adam chuckled.
“This is really good, Adam”, Kris started to say, when the waiter brought a shrimp cocktail for them to share.
They enjoyed their soup and appetizer and another cocktail before their main course arrived.
Adam had ordered the surf and turf for both of them. A nine ounce filet mignon steak with classic bordelaise sauce topped with wild mushrooms and half a lobster tail with lemon and drawn butter. On the side were three cheese potatoes and steamed broccoli.
Kris’s mouth was watering. He kept eying all of the food, wondering how Adam could afford such a meal. “Wow Adam, this is incredible.”
“Yeah, it really is. Good thing I’m such good friends with the owner and all of the waiters.” He winked.
Kris relaxed at that. He didn’t want Adam spending all of his money on dinner for him. How would he ever repay him? ‘Wait, waiters?’ Kris decided he didn’t want to know.
They enjoyed their meal while several different people came up to their table to say hello, including the owner. “Adam, how are you?” He asked, kissing Adam’s cheek.
“Good, Andre. This is my date, Kris.”
“Well, hello, Kris. You are out with a wonderful man. We love Adam around here. How is your mother?”
“She’s well. Thank you, Andre.”
They were also visited by a few of the waiters who seemed a little too friendly to Kris.
“So, everyone knows you.” He said with a matter of fact tone.
“Yeah, I worked here for a couple of years, and my mom is the assistant manager.
“Oh.”
“What?”
“Well, a couple of the waiters seemed a little ‘friendly’.”
“Aw, are you jealous, Krissy?” Adam teased.
Kris blushed, “No.”
“Good, you don’t need to be.” Adam placed his hand on Kris’s leg and gently rubbed it.
They finished their dinner and took their dessert to go. Kris saw no check, but Adam left a generous tip on the table for their waiter. He smiled. Adam was a really good guy.
“So Kris, would you want to come back to my place? I’ve left Slade long enough. And my dog sitter is busy tonight”, he smirked.
“Yeah, he’s having a great time, Adam. Thank you. I’d like that.”
“Good. Let’s go.”
