Brother Love - Chapter 70

Adam woke up first, still wrapped up in Kris.  He kissed him on the cheek, while his boy slept on.  Adam smiled as he worked his way down Kris’s body, kissing him gently, so as to not wake him.  Not yet, he smirked.  Adam took him into his mouth, sucking and licking and giving the most delicious wake up.

Kris began to stir mumbling sleepily as Adam picked up the pace, working him over.  As Kris became fully awake, he realized what was going on and tensed, “Fuck, Adam”, he yelled, coming down his throat.

“God, amazing”, Kris said enjoying Adam cleaning him up with his tongue.  “What was that for?”

Adam just grinned, “Thank you.”

“Mm, your welcome”, He said, pushing Adam on the bed, kissing the breath out of him and then returning the favor.

Afterwards, they took a shower, dressed and then met the family in the suite for breakfast.

The previous night, Brent had looked into surfing lessons and signed him and Kris up for a two hour private lesson that morning.  He printed out the waivers and both he and Pam had to sign, since Kris was still a minor.

Pam took the paper from Brent and read the risks out loud.  “I acknowledge that surfing can be dangerous…

…surfing specifically, involves inherent risks.  I may damage my belongings, get hurt, get injured, become ill, drown, or even die.”

Pam looked up at Kris and Brent.  “I don’t think this is a good idea.”

“Mom, no one ever died from a surfing lesson.  They’re just being precautious”, Brent assured his mom.

She finished reading it and handed it to Kris.  “Eat light, boys.  You don’t want to get sick”, Pam warned.

“Are you sure that you don’t want to do it with us, Adam?”

He just shook his head as Chelsey answered for him, “Nah, we’re going to have more fun watching you two.”

“How much does it cost, Brent?”  Ron asked, seemingly concerned.

Adam, who’d been listening back and forth, took that as a sign that Pam and Ron were worried about money.  He made a decision.  “Dad, can I talk to you for a minute?”  He asked, standing up, nodding for Ron to follow him into the other room.

“Use some of the money to pay for the rest of the trip, please?”

“Adam, that’s not necessary.” Ron assured him.

“I want to.” he insisted.  “Besides, we could have a lot more fun.  Kris and Brent could take a longer surfing lesson.”  Then he added, “And I’d feel much better about the money knowing that I’m helping the family, please?”

Ron started to object, but Adam stood firm.  “Dad, I need to do this.”

Ron shook his head in defeat.  “Alright, Adam.  That’s really a nice thing to do.”

Ron grabbed the laptop and went online to his banking institution.  The new account had been added, so he was able to transfer some money into his checking account.

Adam stood firm on the amount, though.  “Adam, that’s too much.”

“No it’s not”, Adam insisted, pushing the button on the computer to seal the deal.

They went back into the kitchen area.  “Everything alright?” Pam asked the pair.

“Yeah”, they both agreed.

“Well, are you two ready?”  Pam asked Brent and Kris.

“I can’t wait to see this”, Chelsey giggled.  “You two falling on your asses.”

“Chelsey”, Pam reprimanded.

“Come on, it should be very entertaining.”

Ron pulled the van out of the driveway and then headed to Santa Monica.  The surfing school was located right on the beach near lifeguard tower 18.

“In case someone needs to rescue you”, Chelsey teased, making Adam laugh.

“You two are very funny.  Kris and I are athletic.  We won’t have any problem at all”, Brent promised, puffing out his chest.

“Let’s make a bet on who falls off their board first.” Adam whispered to Chelsey.

They found parking right in front of where they were meeting the instructor.  They spotted him right away because he was surrounded by surf boards and wet suits and was waving furiously at them.

“Oh man”, Kris and Brent were running down to the shoreline.  “This is gonna be so great.”

Adam, Chelsey, Ron and Pam took a seat in the sand, close enough to see, but far enough not to make them nervous.

Kris and Brent were the only students as this was a private lesson.  The instructor promised that they would be able to get up and actually surf by the end of the two hours.

It was quite comical to watch at first.  The instructor spent some time with them on the beach, but soon they were taking their boards out on the water and before they knew it, both boys were laying on their boards, paddling out to the waves.  The Martins could see the instructor speaking to them and pretty soon, he was yelling to them to get up and take the wave.

Kris fell first, laughing.  Pam caught Adam putting something in Chelsey’s hand.  “You win”, he said, cracking up.  Brent did fall right after that, causing them both to roll over, laughing.

“Hey, it’s their first time”, Pam scolded, smiling.

“Aw, we’re just having fun, mom.”

“It is pretty funny”, she agreed.

But the next wave, they both were up and were actually riding for a few seconds before falling again.  They instructor said a few more things to them and they tried it again.

Before the two hours were up, both of them were riding waves and having a blast.  Adam was standing and cheering for Kris.

“That was totally awesome”, they both said as they returned the boards and wet suits to the instructor and went over to where the Martins were standing and waving to them.

“Oh my God, that was amazing”, Brent said.  “Um so can we go back to Venice beach another day?”  He asked.

“That was so much fun”, Kris said to Adam.

“You looked fantastic, baby.  I’m so proud of you.”

They spent a little time on the pier, had lunch, and then went back to the hotel.  Adam wanted to see Joan today.  Only this time, he wanted Kris with him.  And, he asked if the entire family would come to the bar and then wait for him and Kris while they went upstairs.

They agreed.  Ron wanted to meet these people and get some answers of his own.

They drove to the bar and parked right in front.  Adam led everyone inside.  Terrance turned his head as the group entered.  “Adam”, he came out to greet them.  “Is this your family?”

“Hey, Terrance”, Adam replied to the bartender.  “They all decided to come with me while Kris and I go up and see Joan.  Is it alright if they stay here?

“Sure, sure; let me get you to a table”, he addressed the Martins.  “Can I bring something for you to drink?”

Adam and Kris thanked them all for coming and he took Kris by the hand as they went upstairs to see Joan.

They knocked on her door and waited for it to open.

It took a few minutes and then a door slowly opened by an elderly woman in a wheelchair.  She stared at Adam with her hands over her mouth for a moment.  “Adam”, she motioned for him to bend down and hugged him then stared up at him.  “I thought I’d never see you again”, she said with tears in her eyes.

“You remember me?”  He was a little surprised.

“Of course I do, sweetie”, she ushered them inside, shaking Kris’s hand and introducing herself.  She led them to her couch and patted it, inviting them to sit while she sat next to the couch.

“Sit down, sit down, can I get you something to drink?”

“No thank you.”  He answered her.

“And who is this young man with you?”

“This is Kris.  He’s my boyfriend, Joan.”

“Oh”, she looked like she had no idea Adam was even gay.  “Well nice to meet you, Kris.”  She turned to look at Adam again.  “It’s so good to see you, Adam.  I’ve often wondered what happened to you.  So what brings you by after all this time?”

“I just wanted to talk to you.  I have a lot of questions about my mom.”

“Adam, I’m so sorry for your loss”, she said, sweetly.

“Could you please tell me about her?”

She looked at him strangely.  She’d only died three years ago.  Adam was raised by her.  “Well, I met your mom when you were just a baby.  It was in the hallway.  She was pushing you in a stroller and she seemed a little overwhelmed.”

“Overwhelmed?” he repeated.

“Yes, she was a single mom, working two jobs”, she said, “and also trying to raise you alone.  We talked a lot, and I offered to watch you when she was working.  I was still walking then, she pointed to her chair.”

“Two jobs?”  ‘Here it comes’, he thought to himself.

“Well, she was a waitress at the bar downstairs of course and she mentioned a few times about another place somewhere on Hollywood Boulevard.  I think she was a waitress there, too.”

Adam looked over at Kris.  ‘Was it possible that Joan had no idea?’

As the conversation continued, Adam realized that Joan really did have no idea.  She talked about his mom like she was this lovely person, who tried very hard to raise her child.  ‘My mom kept her other life completely a secret.  Maybe she was really trying.’

“As I got older, you watched me less and less”, he accused.

“Well you were in school, and you had activities that she put you in.”

‘Activities?’  Adam shook his head, ‘Wow, this was priceless’

“Then I got sick, and ended up in this chair, mostly”, she smiled apologetically.

“You can’t walk at all?”

“With assistance; I use a cane whenever I go out, which isn’t very often.  Occasionally, I’ve gone to the bar to ask about you.”

“Jerry told me.”

“Adam, your mom really did love you.  I know she had her problems.  I encouraged her to get help for her...”  She looked around the room for some reason and then whispered, “Drug problem.”

“You knew my mom had a drug problem.”

“She tried so hard to get clean.  I know that a few times, when she was struggling, she sent you to live with relatives.”

“Relatives?”

“Yes, who was it?  A sister in Arkansas or something…”

“My Aunt Elizabeth.”  He finished for her.

“Yes, that’s right.  Anyway, I didn’t see your mom very much anymore, and then I heard that she’d died.”

“I moved back for a while.”

“You did?”  She looked surprised.  “I had no idea.  You should have come and visited me.”

“It wasn’t for very long.” He wondered why he never did that either.  He’d forgotten about her.  Then he got picked up for prostitution and sent to jail and then…

“So did you go and live with your aunt?”

“I did.”

“I’m glad you have someone, Adam.”  She patted him on the hand.

“She died six months later.”

“Oh Adam, I’m so sorry.”

Adam went on to explain what happened to him and how he ended up with the Martins and Kris.  He didn’t have the heart to tell her who his mom really was, or what she had made him do.  After a while, they said their goodbyes, and left Joan alone.

The walk back downstairs was quiet; each one in their own thoughts as they walked back into the bar.  Chelsey and Brent were seated at the bar talking to Terrance with a couple of the girls who also knew Adam.

They found their parents sitting at a table talking to Jerry.  It seemed like a deep conversation.  Pam noticed them first, and tapped Ron on the shoulder.  They both stood up.  “Are you ready to go?”  Pam said, abruptly.

“Yeah mom.”

They both shook Jerry’s hand and he walked them to the door.

“Good bye, Adam”, Jerry gave him a hug.  “It was really good seeing you.”

“Thanks Jerry”, Adam hugged him back.  “I’ll see ya around.”

“Sure, Adam.”

Everyone said their good byes, and the Martin family left the bar, for good.

“Everything go alright with Joan?”

“Yeah mom, it did.  Can we talk later?”

“Sure sweetie.”

They walked outside and then piled into the van.  “So Adam, what do you want to do for the rest of the day?”  Ron asked him.

He thought about it for just a minute.    “I’d like to go back to the hotel and hang out at the pool if that’s alright?”

“I think that’s a great idea, Adam.  Then we’ll head over to the Pantages Theatre early and have dinner before the show.”

Everyone had almost forgotten that tonight was ‘Wicked’.  Adam couldn’t wait.
