Driving Me Crazy Chapter 6
Adam slept the whole trip to Albany. He had interviews and then a Meet & Greet planned as soon as they arrived followed by sound check. Kris didn’t see him again until long after the show.
After greeting fans, Adam finally came aboard the bus. He looked energized and more alive than the last time Kris had seen him.
Tommy and Brian had sat with Kris during lunch on the bus and discussed Adam’s little problem. “I know it has something to with asshole.”
“Yeah, I looked at his messages from that jerk last night. They were weird. Sometimes he’s yelling at Adam and practically accusing him of cheating, and then he’s all sweet. “
“There’s something wrong with that dude.”
“I just want Adam to see that. He’s not good for our boy.”
Kris sat quietly though the exchange, but agreed completely with them. Adam was too good of a person for this and he deserved so much better.
“Hey Kris,” Adam greeted him cheerfully.
“Adam, how was the show?”
“Awesome,” he winked at his driver and made his way back to the bus. His phone began buzzing as he passed his band mates. Adam’s demeanor went from happy to miserable in seconds.
Tommy and Brian looked at each other and shook their heads. They grabbed beers from the refrigerator and Tommy took one back to Adam.
They sat and talked for a few minutes. Adam told him he thought that Jason was cheating on him. He showed him the text messages from this morning.
“Yeah, sounds like that first one was meant for someone else, Adam.”
Nodding, “I know. What should I do? Should I confront him?”
“If it’s true, he’ll only lie to you.”
“You’re right. The thing is, I’m not really surprised and I’m not even that sad. I’m more mad, you know?”
Tommy put his arm around his dear friend, “Adam, he’s not good for you. I think it’s time for you to let him go and get on with your life.” There, he finally said it.
“I know you’re right, but…”
“You want another beer?”
“Nah, I’m fine Tommy, thanks.”
“Anytime, baby boy.”
Adam chuckled at the nickname Tommy had given him years ago.
The busses pulled out and everyone was settled into their bunks. Kris turned the music on softly and began thinking about Adam. He shouldn’t be doing this to himself. Adam was in a relationship. A fucked up one, for sure, but Kris should stay out of it. He’d only end up getting hurt. Besides, Adam didn’t feel that way about him, so he’d definitely end up hurt. Sighing, he didn’t hear Adam come down the aisle and take a seat next to him.
“What are you thinking about so hard?”
“Oh, Adam. You startled me.”
“So?”
He grinned at the beautiful man next to him, “Nothing, really.”
“I had a really great time dancing with you last night.”
“Yeah, so did I.”
They chatted about Adam’s show and meeting the fans. Adam would literally light up when he talked about his Glamberts. “They’re so passionate.”
“Kris, can I ask you a question?”
“Sure, Adam. Anything.”
“Have you ever been in love?”
Kris looked over at Adam. He wanted to say, yes, with you. “No.”
“Well, I thought I was. Well, not really. I mean I thought I loved Jason, but I don’t know that I’ve ever been in love with him.”
“Really?”
“He’s been acting really weird and I just…”
“Just what?”
“I don’t miss him enough.”
“Do you want to break up with him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Oh.”
“I don’t know what I want to do.”
“Adam?”
“Yeah?”
“You’re an incredible person, do you know that?”
“You’re sweet, Kris.”
“No, I mean it. You deserve someone who loves you and will treat you right.”
Adam thought about that. “Got anyone in mind?” He snorted, teasing.
Kris almost said, “Me”
Adam changed the subject after that and then said goodnight. “See you in the morning, Kris.”
“Goodnight, Adam.”
Now Kris had even more to think about. So Adam wasn’t happy with that guy. For some reason, that made him smile.
It was still early when the busses pulled into the venue. So Kris went back to his bunk and got some shut eye along with the others.
They were woken up late morning for brunch and then Adam had interviews the rest of the day until sound check.
After the show, they were driving to Syracuse for their last NY gig. It was only a couple of hours. Kris slept all day, and then he was going to the show tonight. He couldn’t wait. He loved watching Adam perform.
Kris woke up just after sound check as the guys were getting dressed and ready to perform.
He had on his Staff/VIP lanyard and was allowed to hang out with the band before the show. They had a catered dinner brought into the dressing room and then it was time for Kris to find his seat.
The audience was thumping as they played dance songs on the loud speakers to rile the crowd up. Kris was dancing with two girls who thought “he was the cutest thing ever”.
“Adam likes to see the cute boys,” they said, eyeing Kris. “He’s gonna love you,” they decided.
Kris didn’t want to tell them that he knew Adam or drove his bus, so he just let them have their fun with him.
The opening act was good and they got everyone worked up. Then the dance music came back to keep everyone going. The stage was dark, but they could make out the figures of the crew. Dillon and Kurt were setting up the stage. He felt his heart racing at the anticipation like everyone else. Sometimes he couldn’t believe his life right now.
The lights turned down and the crowd began screaming and chanting, “Adam, Adam, Adam, Adam...” Kris joined in.
Then he saw Tommy, Brian, Ashley and Rick walk onto the stage and get ready to play. The lights came up and the guitar began wailing and then Adam came out onto the stage, microphone in hand singing the words to his opening number. The lights hit the stage and he was immediately illuminated as he moved his body to the rhythm of the music.
Kris was stunned into silence. Adam was wearing very tight, shiny, leopard skinned pants with a black v-neck shirt and his Rick Owens boots.
The girl next to him giggled, “He’s gorgeous,” she yelled.
Kris nodded, coming out of his trance.
After the first number, Adam began speaking, “Hello Buffalo!”
The crowd roared.
“Are you ready to partayyyy?”
Then he went into the second number though the shouting of the loving audience.
At one point, Adam was wailing into the microphone, grinding his hips, obscenely and sang directly to Kris, actually pointing at him and doing something with his tongue. Holy Shit!
The girls went nuts. “Oh my God, he just pointed you out!”
They felt pretty special right now. So did Kris.
~~~~
After the show, Kris went back to the bus for a quick nap while Adam and the band showered and went outside to meet the fans.
It was only a couple hours drive to their next destination. Adam stayed up and talked to Kris the entire trip. He was getting used to their talks and realized he was becoming quite attached to the little guy. Smiling, he remembered their last dance. Then he thought of Jason.
Jason hadn’t called or texted him all day. What the fuck.
Adam decided to head back to his lair and call his boyfriend. What he didn’t expect was someone else to answer his phone. “Hello?” Said the sleepy voice on the other end.
“Who is this?” Adam demanded.
Then he heard fumbling, and an “oh shit” and then finally Jason came on the line. “Hey babe.”
“Who was that?”
“Just a friend, Adam. Why, only you can have friends?” He snapped.
“No, of course not, but…”
“But what? We’re just hanging out. No big deal.”
“I gotta go,” Jason quickly said and then hung up. Was Jason cheating on him?
The bus had stopped and Kris was walking back to his bunk, but Adam headed him off. “Hey Kris?”
“Hi Adam, shouldn’t you be sleeping?”
“Yeah, I just…”
“Is everything alright?”
“Not really, could we talk?”
“Sure.”
Kris followed Adam to his lair and Adam led him over to a couch. He told him everything. “What do you think?”
“Honestly?”
“Oh course.”
“I think he’s a jerk to treat you that way and you deserve much better.”
“Yeah, you said that before,” he rolled his eyes.
Kris moved closer to the rock star and swept the hair from his eyes, looking directly at him. “I meant it.”
Their faces were barely inches apart, and Kris was looking into piercing, yet sad, blue eyes. He wanted to kiss him so badly right now, but…
Adam blinked and then pulled away. He really wanted to kiss Kris, but would it be right? “Thanks, Kris.”
Kris gathered his composure, slightly embarrassed. Why, because you almost kissed him? Or because he pulled away? He had plenty of time to ponder that one. “For what?” He asked, instead.
“Just being here,” Adam smiled and then walked back to his bed. He needed some shuteye. He’d deal with Jason tomorrow.
~~~~
Adam couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking about that phone call. What the fuck? He got angrier and angrier and decided to call him back right now. This time, it went into voicemail. He was relieved. He didn’t want to give Jason a chance to change his mind. “Jason, we’re through. Didn’t want to do this over the phone, but you’re lover really did that for me, now, didn’t he? Please have your things out by the time I get home.” Then he hung up, and a single tear fell. He actually felt pretty good about it. Jason had been treating him like shit for months, most of their relationship, actually.
And then he briefly thought about Kris and that almost kiss tonight. Would that have been so bad? Shaking his head, he picked up his phone again and texted Tommy, ‘I did it. I broke up with Jason’.
That made it more real. He turned off his telephone, laying it on the night stand and promptly fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Kris was stewing up front. He almost kissed Adam, and Adam backed away from him. Well, there you have it. He’s not interested in you. Give it up, country boy, he berated himself. Like you ever had a shot with Adam Lambert, anyway, he snorted sarcastically to himself. He knew better than to fall for the rock star but he went and did it anyway and now look at him. Pathetic
The bus pulled into the next venue and Kris went back to his bunk. Tommy was awake, just reading his message from Adam, a huge grin on his face. “What’s up Tommy?” Kris asked.
“Oh, I just think today’s gonna be interesting.”
Confused, Kris said goodnight, and crawled into his bunk for a nap.
They had a show tonight in Syracuse and then heading Boston where they’d spend two nights before heading to Philly. So, Kris would be spending the time during the concert sleeping, getting ready for the drive east.
He had bus driver tasks to keep him busy during the day like laundry. On of the many perks of being a bus driver was doing the band’s laundry. Kris kept himself busy washing their sheets and clothing along with his own. He tried not to fantasize about Adam in his sheets. Really, that would be creepy.
When he was finished, he met the band for an early dinner and then he headed out to the busses to sleep. He’d have a long drive in a few hours.
He wondered if Adam would sit with him tonight. Or did he scare the guy off? And what about Adam’s boyfriend? Sure he was a dick. But enough for Adam to break up with him? And what if he did? That didn’t mean anything for Kris. The guy obviously wasn’t interested in him. His head was swirling as sleep finally took over.
