Brotherly Love - Chapter 113

Tanner had arranged for a private room for his family, because he knew that Amanda would have a lot of visitors and they wouldn’t want to take turns.  That and he could stay longer as well.  He was in no hurry to leave his family tonight.
He led the Martins down the hallway and asked them to wait until he checked on his wife to make sure she was ready for her guests.

Adam held the gift basket in his arms and waited for Tanner to signal them to enter.

Just a few moments later, Tanner came out grinning like he’d just won the lottery.  “Come on in everyone, and meet my new little man,” Tanner said, proudly, as the Martin family entered the room.

Amanda was sitting up in bed, holding the little one.  His tiny head peaked out from the blanket and his eyes were open as he looked at the new visitors.

“Aw, hey there little guy.” Adam placed the gift basket on the table near the bed and sat down next to Amanda.  “He’s beautiful,” Adam gushed, looking into those tiny blue eyes.

“Thank you, Adam.”  She looked from Adam to the other Martin’s and smiled.  “We’d like you all to meet William Adam Hutchinson.”

“Amanda, really?”  Adam felt himself choke up.  “You named him Adam?”

“His middle name and yes, we did, sweetie.  William is for both Tanner’s brother and father.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

“Say thank you,” Kris whispered into Adam’s ear.

“Thank you,” Adam said, smiling at the tiny bundle in his friend’s arms. "It means so much to me."

“Do you want to hold him?”

“Oh, I don’t know.” Adam looked nervously from Amanda to the baby.

“You’ll be fine,” she assured the young man.

“Okay then.  Kris, will you sit with me?”

Kris immediately sat next to Adam and waited for Tanner to take the baby from Amanda’s arms and walk him over to the boys, placing him in Adam’s awaiting arms.  “Aw, he’s looking at me.”

“He’s so tiny,” Kris commented, pulling his blanket away so they could see his face.

Adam rocked him and within a few minutes, little William fell asleep in his arms.  “Oh, I put him to sleep.”

“He feels safe with you, Adam,” Amanda remarked, smiling at both of the boys.

Adam held him for a few more minutes while Pam and Kris fawned quietly over the child.  Then, Tanner picked him up and placed him in the hospital bassinet to sleep.  “Hopefully, he’ll be out for a few hours so Amanda can sleep, too.”

“Oh, we should go then,” Pam said, standing up.

“Not yet, I want to visit for a bit,” Amanda sat up, ready to shoot daggers at anyone attempting to leave, patting the space next to her for Pam to sit down.

Adam picked up the gift basket and handed it to Amanda on the bed.  “We thought you were having a girl and I picked out all pink things.”

“Oh, sorry about that,” Amanda chuckled.

Adam shrugged, “They let us exchange everything.  It probably happens a lot.”

“Yeah, he sure surprised us,” Amanda said, looking through the basket of goodies. There was a bib that said Daddy’s boy and a little blue onesie and booties and—“I love it all, Thank you, Adam.”

“Well, we’d better let the little mama get some sleep while the baby’s sleeping,” Tanner politely suggested after a few more minutes.

Everyone said their goodbyes and cooed at the baby, peeking into his hospital bassinet while he slept on and then they filed out of the room.  “I’ll come by in the morning,” Pam told Amanda before shutting the door.

When it was finally quiet, Tanner sat on the bed next to his wife and kissed her.  “That’s quite a family we have, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, they sure are,” she beamed, thinking about how far Adam had come, and then she looked down at her own son.

Everyone was still reeling from the miracle they had just witnessed when the Martin family arrived back home.

“He’s so beautiful,” was the general consensus among the group.

“Mom, he was so tiny in my arms, “Adam said, cradling his arms as though he was still holding the newborn baby.

“You were amazing with him, Adam,” Pam beamed at her son.  “You’ll make a great father one day.”

“What?”  Adam exclaimed.  “How could that happen?” He looked over at Kris who was blushing all sorts of red.

“Hey, don’t look at me.” Kris looked apalled.

“There are ways boys,” Pam told them.  “When you’re ready.”

Both teengers looked at their mom like she had just sprouted a second head.

The last two nights of the show were much more uneventful than the previous one, except for the standing ovation that Adam and his leading ladies received both nights.  After the final performance, the production company hosted a cast party at a nearby hotel with an open bar and lots of hugs and promises to get together soon.

Adam and the older Martin kids would start school the following week, but this weekend the Martin family was going out on the lake one more time before everyone was gone again.

On Saturday morning, they piled into the Suburban and headed over to the lake. Once there, the family boarded the boat, greeting the captain on the way.  “It’s gonna be a fine day,” he informed the group.
Just as they were getting seated, they heard squealing and then saw Melanie run up to them, followed by her mother.  “Adam, Kris!”

“Hey Melanie.”

“Did I surprise you?”

“You sure did,” Adam patted the child on the head.  “You’re getting so big.”

“I’m going into the fourth grade,” she said, so grown up.

The group settled in while the captain went over the rules and handed Melanie her life jacket.  She groaned, just like last time, but said that she understood.  “Since I almost fell off before,” she exclaimed.

“I remember that, I was so scared,” Adam said.

“I just wanted to see the fishes,” she pouted.

“So Melanie, are you already for school?”

“Yup, look at my new shoes,” she straightened both of her legs and pointed her toes so they could all see her new sparkly sneakers that lit up.

“Very cool, Mel”

“You should see when I run,” the little girl started to get up, but her mother intervened.

“Not on the boat, Melanie”

“I know,” she grumbled.

They spent the day coasting around the huge lake, stopping every so often to fish.  Kris cast his rod into the water while Adam stood behind him, hands around Kris’s waist, breathing into his neck.

The captain finally docked on the other side of the lake so they could stop for lunch.  They grabbed the two coolers from the cabin and headed onto the dock.  There was a picnic area with benches where they set up their lunch.

The boys sat down and Melanie squeezed in between them giving Adam a huge grin.

“Some things never change,” Kris mumbled.  “Looks great, mom.” he added.

“The seaside shanty delivered this for us,” she explained, taking out the crab cake sandwiches, chips, pickles and drinks.  There were also containers of potato salad and coleslaw and plastic cutlery wrapped in napkins.

“So, Melanie, what did you do this summer?”  Adam asked her while he dug into his sandwich.

“I started gymnastics,” she squealed.

“Wow, that’s great.”

“I can do a cartwheel and I love the balance beam the best.”

“Cool,” Adam said, as Melanie took off running and then did her best cartwheel.

“Melanie, come back and have lunch,” her mom gently reprimanded.

“Fine,” she grumbled.  Then she added, “Did you see, Adam?”

“I sure did, Mel. That was amazing.”

After lunch, they re-boarded the boat and headed back to the other side of the lake.  It was a splendid afternoon and a much needed break for all of them, especially Adam.

The Martin’s said goodbye to their friends, and watched Melanie “cartwheel” away, screeching, “Bye Adam, bye Kris!”

“Well, that was fun,” Pam said as they piled into their car and headed for home.  Everyone nodded, but too tired to vocally agree.

Kris leaned his head on Adam’s shoulders, while Adam put his arm around his boyfriend.  “I love you,” he whispered to the smaller boy.  Kris snuggled closer.
***
The next week was busy, with Adam and the older Martin kids getting ready to go back to school.  Kris was a little sad that he was being left behind, but he knew that he’d be with Adam a lot in their new apartment; as much as Pam would let him go, of course.

Tommy had promised to give them a lot of space.  He still felt badly about Adam paying for most of it, so making himself scarce whenever they wanted to be alone was the least he could do for his friends.

Kris and Adam drove over to the apartment to meet Tommy so they could finish decorating the place.  They had gone to the Wal-Mart to pick up everything they needed for the kitchen and bathroom.  Tommy helped them carry everything inside.

“Wow, this is a lot of crap,” he said, snickering.

“Well, we needed everything,” Adam shrugged.

“Can you cook?” Tommy asked the both of them.

“We can make spaghetti,” Kris informed him.  He and Adam chuckled at the memory of their first time cooking spaghetti together at the beach house.  That felt like so long ago.

The three roommates organized the kitchen first, and then made dinner together.  Adam and Kris started the sauce, while Tommy cooked the spaghetti and put the garlic bread in the oven.  Then, all three helped make the salad and set the table.
When they were finished, they sat down and enjoyed their meal together.  “Thank you,” Adam said to Tommy.

“For what? You guys were amazing!” he said, taking a bite of the spaghetti.

“For all of this.  Our apartment and dinner and just…” he felt himself tearing up for some reason.  Both guys ran over and hugged Adam.

“Stop being sappy, dude,” Tommy tried to lighten the mood.

“Yeah, sorry, this is just so perfect.”

“I’m going to go home for a couple of days and finished packing for school,” Tommy informed the still hugging pair as he sat back down and munched on his garlic bread.

“Really, are you sure?”

“Yeah, positive.  I’ll spend a couple of days with my parents and sister and give you guys some time alone.”

“Thanks, Tommy.”

“Hey, no sweat.”

They finished their meal chatting casually about school and stuff and then went into the living room. Adam turned on their new television, “wanna watch a movie?”

Kris piped up right away in agreement, but Tommy hesitated.

“Come on, Tommy, we’re not kicking you out.”

“Oh, I know, but there’ll be plenty of movie watching nights with me," he snickered.  "I’m gonna head out and let you two have the place to yourselves.”

“Are you sure?”

Tommy just laughed at the sight of Kris hanging all over Adam on the couch, nuzzling his chest, “Yeah, I’m sure, buddy.”

“Thanks, Tommy,” Kris said, face still pressed against Adam’s bare skin.

“I’ll walk you out,” Adam started.

Tommy stopped him, “No need; I’m not a guest.  Have fun, and don’t do it on the couch,” he warned, then giggled.

“Funny.”

“See you on Saturday, for move in day!”

And then they were alone.

“Urgh, finally!”  Kris began pulling Adam’s shirt off.

“Baby, remember?”

“What,” Kris pouted.

“No sex on the couch.”

“Can’t we stay here and make out for a while?”

“Of course,” Adam said, smiling at his cuddly boyfriend.  He finished pulling off his shirt, and then did the same for Kris, who nuzzled back into his chest as the movie started.

“This is nice.”

“Yeah,” he answered, kissing Kris’s temple.

***
Kris woke up first, “Shit, we fell asleep!” he complained.

“Huh baby?”

“Come on; let’s go to bed.”

“I’m sleepy,” Adam said, yawning.

“I know, come on.”  Kris pulled Adam to a sitting position and then walked him to their room and led him over to the bed, quickly pulling down the covers..  Adam fell onto the bed and giggled.  “Thanks, baby.”

“But I’m waking you up later to, you know.” Kris said with a very determined look on his face before getting in the bed next to Adam.

Adam giggled again.  “Can’t wait, baby.” Then he snuggled against his boyfriend and they promptly fell asleep.
