Chapter 3

Mrs. Martin received a phone call from child services early in the morning before she left for work. The social worker came to visit Kris every six months now, but they hardly ever called. She picked up the phone on the second ring. “Hello?” She answered nervously.

“Hello, Mrs. Martin?”

She called Mr. Martin immediately afterwards and told him about the phone call. He immediately agreed. “Of course we should do it.”

She nodded and hung up the phone.

Kris came home after school and put down his books. He was so excited, baseball practice was starting today. He went into the kitchen and grabbed a snack and started on his homework. He thought about baseball, and how he couldn’t wait to get back on the field. He felt his pants get a little tight when his thoughts went to Ethan, again. He was embarrassed. Kris knew that the other boys would make fun of him if they discovered his secret. He pushed the thought away and finished his homework and then left the house for practice.

That evening during dinner, Kris’s foster parents said they had something that they wanted to discuss with their children. They listened while they ate their meatloaf. “We got a call from the social worker’s office today.”

Kris tightened up. That usually meant something about him. He glanced up at them with his eyes wide. They looked nervous. He began to wonder if they were going to tell him that he had to leave.

“Kris, relax.” His foster dad said. “We received news about a troubled boy who needs a good family to take him in. His name is Adam and he’s fifteen. “

They waited for the three children to react.

Chelsey shrugged her shoulders. “Sure, whatever, I’m not here that much anymore.”

The two boys sort of nodded in agreement, so their mom continued.

“His mom died a few years ago, and he’s been in several foster homes over the years and most recently lived with an aunt until she died a few months ago. His last home didn’t work out and they want a stable family for him to live with.” She looked around at her children’s faces for a reaction.

Kris and Brent looked at each other and then Brent spoke first. “I think it’s a good idea.”

“Yeah”, Kris chimed in. “I’d like someone a little closer to my age to hang out with.” He pushed Brent with his shoulder.

“Are you sure, boys? He might be a handful, especially at first.”

“You mean more than Kris?” Brent flubbed up Kris’s hair and laughed. Kris laughed too.

“Ok. It’s settled then. I will call the social worker tomorrow and we’ll get to meet Adam.”

They chatted for the rest of their meal about their day.

The next morning, Mrs. Martin called child services. They were very pleased and would let the social worker know right away. “We’ll make arrangements for Adam to come tonight, if possible. Thank you again, Mrs. Martin.”

She hung up the phone, knowing they were doing the right thing. She couldn’t imagine what might have happened to Kris, if they hadn’t taken him in.

Amanda got out of her car and waited for the bus to arrive. She hoped that Adam wouldn’t put up too much of a fight.

The bus finally pulled up and stopped. The driver opened the door to let some of the passengers out. She didn’t see Adam, so she got on the bus and explained to the driver what she was doing there. He pointed to the back of the bus. She walked down the aisle and spotted Adam in the last row, still asleep. She didn’t want to scare him, so she gentle nudged his shoulder and whispered in his ear. “Adam, Adam wake up, sweetie.”

“Huh, what?” Adam sat up, scared. “You.”

“Yes, Adam, it’s me.”

“Why are you here? I want to go home.”

She sat down next to Adam and held his hand. “Honey, you can’t go there, not right now. There isn’t anyone to take care of you in California.”

“I can take care of myself. I always have.” Adam said through clenched teeth.

“Come on, sweetie. I’ve found a new home for you. A really good one, this time.”

“Another Group home?”

“No. It’s with a really nice family in Conway.”

“Arkansas?” Adam asked with venom.

“Yes, Adam. Arkansas. It’s about a half hour away from Little Rock.”

She tugged on his hand to pull him up and together, they walked out of the bus.

“I’ll tell you all about the family on our way.”

“We’re going now?” He questioned.

“Yes, Adam.”

They walked to her car and got in. Amanda turned to look at Adam. “Sweetie, I am so sorry about what happened at Joseph’s. He told me about Bryce.”

Adam looked embarrassed. “Oh, he told you his side?”

“Yes, he did and I didn’t believe a word of it”, she smiled at Adam.

“Bryce didn’t even defend me.”

“I’m so sorry.” She smiled sadly at the boy in front of her.

They drove the two and a half hours to Conway and spent the time talking about the Martins. She told him about Kris, and that he was also a foster kid who had been there for nine years and how much the family loved him. That made Adam both happy and nervous. “What if they don’t like me? What if they think I’m bad, too?”

“You are not bad, Adam. I promise you, you will like this family and they will love you.”

The Martins spent the morning straightening up their home. Kris was cleaning his room, which he’d be sharing with Adam. He was both excited and nervous. He’d never shared a room before. They had all decided that it would be better for Adam to share with Kris, but made very sure that Kris was alright with that. The Martins never wanted Kris to feel like he didn’t matter or wasn’t as important as the rest of the family.

Kris felt very lucky.

Soon, they could hear the car pull up and the social worker got out of the car, and once again, she had to walk around to Adam’s side and let him out. Adam was numb to this now; another foster family. ‘Wonder why they want me’, is all he thought. He remembered the other families, and how they only wanted the money.

He was surprised when all five of them came running out of the house to greet him. Kris ran all the way up to Adam and threw his arms around him. “Welcome, Adam.” He said as he squeezed him tight.

Adam didn’t move. He just had a shocked look on his face while he stood, rigid.

“Kris”, his parents called out. “Don’t scare him, baby.”

Kris stepped backed, “Oh, sorry, I’m just a little excited.”

Chelsey and Brent cracked up at their little ‘brother’.

They rest of the family slowly walked up to Adam and one by one, they greeted him.

Adam looked over at Amanda with total fear in his eyes.

“Adam’s been through a lot”, was all she said.

“Well, Adam. We are very happy to have you. I am Pam Martin and this is my husband, Ron.”

“Nice to meet you, ma’am, sir.” Adam reached out to shake their hands, but kept his head down.

“Oh, none of that, sweetie”, and they both hugged Adam. “Please call us Pam and Ron, for now.”

“I’m Brent. I’m in eleventh grade”, Brent said, walking up to Adam. “We’ll be going to the same school. I’ll show you around if you like, Adam”, Brent hugged him, too.

Adam just nodded.

“Hey there, Adam, I’m Chelsey. I’m in college, but I come home on weekends.” She hugged him, too.

“That’s cool”, Adam replied.

“And that goofball bouncing up and down is Kris”, Brent laughed.

“Adam”, Kris ran back up to him and gave him another big hug. “We’re sharing a room together, aren’t you excited?”

“Um, sure?”

Adam was feeling totally overwhelmed and finally just broke into tears. The social worker ran over to him and held him tight. “Oh Adam, it’s going to be OK.” Adam nodded his head and just kept crying.
