Chapter 8
Adam woke the next morning to Kris’s alarm clock playing ‘I kissed a Girl’.
“I love Katy Perry”, Kris practically bounce out of his bunk. “Get up, Adam. School time.” Kris went into the bathroom as Adam groaned, and reluctantly got out of bed. He barged into the bathroom to a surprised Kris.
“Hey”, Kris said through spitting out toothpaste. “Good thing I wasn’t peeing.”
“Sorry Kris, but I do have to pee, so…”
“Oh gross.” Kris spat out. “I don’t want to see your…” But he peaked, embarrassed, and ran out of the bathroom to a laughing Adam.
They both emerged twenty minutes later and went downstairs. Brent was already at the table eating breakfast.
“Good morning, boys”, Pam spoke up. “Sleep well?”
“Yup, I’m starving”, Kris said sitting quickly and pouring his cereal.
“Hey Adam”, Brent said. “Are you ready to meet the guys?”
“Um, sure.” Adam wasn’t sure about meeting Brent’s friends. They were older and… Why would they like him?
“Great, Rick will be picking us up in his car. I don’t have one yet…” He glared at his mom.
Mrs. Martin ignored the comment as the boys finished their breakfast.
Pretty soon, they hear a horn honk. “Bye mom”, Brent said running out the door. Adam was a little slower getting up.
“Have a good day at school, Adam.” Pam kissed him good bye.
“Bye Adam”, Kris piped in through bites of cereal.
“Later, Kris.” Adam walked out the door and into the fresh air.
“Hey Rick, this is Adam.” Brent pointed to Adam coming down the walk.
“Hi Adam, what grade are you in?” He said while Adam climbed in the back seat of the car.
“Um, ninth.” He shyly said.
“Great, so you’re fifteen?”
“Um, yeah; thanks for the ride. I’m a little nervous about starting a new school.”
“Yeah, I’d be too.” Rick replied with a nod.
They drove to their other friend’s house for the last stop. Her name was Danielle.
“Hey guys”, Danielle said, climbing into the back seat next to Adam. “Hi there, Adam, right?”
“Right.”
“I’m Danielle, nice to meet you.”
They chatted the rest of the way to school. Danielle and Rick asked Adam questions. They both knew about him already. Brent had told them last week that he was getting a new foster brother. He thought it would be better to explain ahead of time, so they didn’t make Adam feel uncomfortable answering questions like ‘why are you living with the Martins?’
“Let me see your schedule Adam”, Danielle offered. “Oh you have Mrs. Pierce for English. I had her last year. She’s ok.” Danielle went over Adam’s schedule and told him about the teachers that she knew. “Chorus and drama?”
“Yeah, I didn’t know what else to pick.” Adam said shyly.
“Well that’s great. I’m in both, too. We’ll get to see each other. Hey, you should try out for the play.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that.”
Danielle flashed him a huge grin. “Well, think about it, ok? We’ve already started rehearsals, but I’m sure that a few will drop out soon, so there might be an opening.”
Adam just shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe.”
They arrived in the parking lot a few minutes later.
Danielle offered to walk Adam to his home room, while Brent and Rick walked away chuckling. “I think Danielle has a crush on your new brother, Brent”.
“Nah. You think?” Brent watched them walk away with their heads together, talking.

Adam made it to his home room and walked inside as he waved good bye to Danielle. He waited for a few other kids to arrive and then took a seat.
Fortunately, no one really paid attention to him. There were a couple of girls who were staring at him, but he didn’t really take notice.
“Hey, who are you?” One of them walked over and asked him.
“Oh, Adam. I’m new”, he said.
“Well, hi Adam. Welcome. I’m Samantha and this is Kelly.”
“Hey”, he smiled weakly at them.
“Well, nice meeting you Adam”, and they giggled on the way back to their seats.
After noticing how the girls were reacting to the ‘new kid’, one boy sitting in the back with cowboy boots on walked up to Adam and stood right in front on him. “Hey!”
That startled Adam to look in his direction. “Um, Hey?” He replied.
“Where are you from, new kid?” He had his hands folded.
“California.” Adam answered, eyeing the kid suspiciously
“Well, sunshine. Watch yourself.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Adam asked at the same time he stood up and towered over the bully.
“Oh, um. Nothing.” The boy shrunk back, intimidated by Adam’s height.
“Oh Sit down Larry, and shut up, really.” Samantha yelled at him.
“Larry, huh?” Adam spoke up, still standing and looking down at Larry. “Nice to meet you, Larry”, he said with raised eyebrows and a smile.
The rest of the morning went fairly smoothly. Most of his teachers introduced him at the beginning of each class. That made him a little uncomfortable at first. He didn’t really want to draw attention to himself, but at least it stopped kids from asking “Who are you?” all of the time.
Pretty soon it was time for lunch. That made Adam really nervous. ‘What if he had to sit all alone?’ He thought to himself.
~~~~
Meanwhile,
Danielle caught up with Brent and Rick. “So Dani, you totally have a crush on Adam.” Rick blurted out.
“What?” She blurted.
“We saw you flirting with him, walking him to class.”
“Well he’s way cuter that most of the guys at this school.”
“But he’s a ninth grader.”
Danielle rolled her eyes at both of them. “Yeah, that and he doesn’t play for my team. Idiots”, she breathed.
“Oh, Adam doesn’t play any sports.” Brent piped up.
Danielle was bent over, laughing so hard. “Seriously? ‘Guys can be so stupid.’ “Not what I mean, geniuses.” She smacked them both as she walked away from them. Danielle left a very confused Brent and Rick.
“Wait, is she saying that Adam’s…?” Rick spoke.
“No. No way. I live with him.” Brent was shaking his head. Then he thought back to Chelsey making him up and doing his nails. “Would it bother you?” Brent asked Rick.
“Nah, I guess not.” They both shrugged their shoulders and walked to their next class.
Rick, Danielle and Brent all met up for lunch. They spotted Adam in the lunch line and Dani insisted that they invite Adam to sit with them.
However, just as Brent was walking over to him, he saw several girls surrounding Adam, walking him to a table.
Brent snorted, “Sure, he’s gay but get’s all the girls.”
After lunch, it was time for Chorus. Adam found the classroom and introduced himself to the teacher.
“Well hello. Adam, right?” She asked.
“Yeah, I’m in this class next.” He said nervously.
The teacher looked him over. “Have you ever sung before? I looked at your transcripts and you’ve never been in chorus.”
“No ma’am. But yes, I like to sing.”
“Well ok then.” She smiled at him.
The rest of the class milled in, including Danielle. “Adam”, she ran up to him. “How’s your day been so far?”
“Good, I guess.” He shrugged.
“I started to ask you to sit with Brent and me at lunch, but you looked… ahem… busy.”
“Oh, really? Yeah, I sat with this group of really nice girls.”
“Yeah, I know that group. You do know that at least a couple of them have a crush on you, right?”
“What?” Adam said with widened eyes.
“God, are all boys clueless?” Danielle rolled her eyes for the second time that day.
Soon, it was time for class to start. The teacher introduced Adam to the class. They all welcomed him. “Now Adam, not to put you on the spot, but I need to hear you sing.”
“Sorry?”
“Please, come up to the front please.”
Adam stood up but stayed still. Danielle gave him a gentle push. Adam, very reluctantly walked to the front of the classroom.
“Don’t worry, Adam. I’m not going to make you sing alone.”
“Oh, thank God. I was about to pass out.” He wiped the back of his hand over his forehead. The teacher gave him a look. “Ever acted, Adam?”
“Um, no. But I’m in drama, too.”
“Hmmm.”
“Ok, Class, open your folders and pull out ‘Cannon in D’. Adam, here is your folder. It has all of the songs that we’ll be singing this year. Just sing along, alright?”
“Um, ok?”
The teacher sat at the piano and began to play, then she directed the class to begin singing. She wanted Adam in the front so she could hear his vocals over the rest of the class. And what she heard? ‘Holy cow, this kid’s never sang before?’ She kept playing; even thought she wanted to stop the rest of the class and just listen to this boy, belt out the song.
Once class was dismissed, she stopped Adam from leaving for a moment. “Adam?”
“Yes, ma’am?”
“Ms. Chortle, please?”
“Yes, Ms. Chortle?”
“You have a beautiful voice, Adam, just beautiful.”
“Thank you, ma’am… Ms. Chortle.”
“Ok that’s all; get to your next class.”
~~~~
Adam’s last class was drama. He was the most nervous about this one because he figured he’d have to speak in front of the class. He wasn’t totally wrong. He walked into the classroom, and fortunately saw Danielle again. “Oh my God, Adam. Did you see the look on Ms. Chortle’s face when she heard you sing? I’m pretty sure she already told Mrs. Peppering about you.” She whispered.
“Who’s that?” Adam questioned.
“The drama teacher. Look, she’s coming this way.”
“Oh, you must be Adam.” Mrs. Peppering practically ran up to Adam.
Adam was taken aback for a moment. “Yes, um.”
The other students were arriving and they all took their seats. Mrs. Peppering introduced Adam to the class, as usual.
“Ok. Today class, we are continuing Shakespeare. Today, we will begin Romeo and Juliet. Who knows the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet?” She looked around the class, looking at the show of hands…
After class, Mrs. Peppering caught up with Adam before he left. “Adam”, she called out.
“Yes, ma’am?”
“Is there any chance that you can stay after school today?”
“Um, why? Did I do something wrong?” He started getting nervous.
“Oh God, no! Sorry there, Adam. I would like you to audition for our spring musical.”
“Really? I don’t know. I don’t act…” Adam held his head down, totally unsure of himself.
“I heard you in class today, and I know that you can sing.” She gave him a stare. Adam lifted his head to meet her eyes.
“Do you think?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Call home or whatever you need to do, and come and join the drama club in the auditorium in thirty minutes, alright?”
“Ok”, Adam smiled and walked out to the parking lot to meet Brent.
He didn’t expect to run into Larry; or Larry’s friends. He suddenly found himself surrounded, “Hello, Sunshine.”
