Chapter 9

“Call home or whatever you need to do, and come and join the drama club in the auditorium in thirty minutes, alright?”

“Ok”, Adam smiled and walked out to the parking lot to meet Brent.

He didn’t expect to run into Larry; or Larry’s friends. He found himself surrounded, “Hello, Sunshine.”

“Larry.” Adam was nervous, but didn’t want to show it this bunch of punks. Fortunately, it was only four. “What can I do for you?”

“Ahhah”, Larry laughed looking at his three friends. “Sunshine wants to know what he can do for us?” He looked back at Adam. “For starters, stay away from our girls, Sunshine.”

Adam just glared at Larry. “You’re joking, right?” Adam put his hands on his hips and looked around the group. He was taller than all of these guys. “Well, first of all, it’s not ‘Sunshine’, its Adam. And I grew up on the streets of Hollywood, not the beach. I know how to take care of myself, if you catch my drift. You think I’m actually scared of a couple of cowboys who are threatened by me?” Adam turned to walk away. “And besides, Larry, you’ve got me all wrong, Cowboy.” With that, Adam walked through the stunned potential lynching mob and towards Brent and his buddies.

“Hey Brent.” Adam looked about to puke.

“Whoa, Adam. That was cool. You totally told off those punks.”

“Thanks. Hey, I’m staying after school for drama”, he stared ahead.

“Yeah, I know, Dani already texted me. Killem', Adam”, Brent winked and got into his car. Adam waved back to him as he walked back towards the school.

Adam walked into the auditorium and found Mrs. Peppering. “Oh, there you are, Adam. I’m so glad you could make it.” She smiled at him.

“Um, I’ve never done anything like this.”

“That’s ok, honey. Here is a script. I just want you to read the parts that say ‘Jared’, that’s your character. “

At that moment, Danielle walked in. “Danielle, honey. Please come here?”

“Sure, Mrs. Peppering.”

“I want you to read with Adam.”

Dani and Adam stood on the stage, and after a few minutes of reading, Adam felt more comfortable.    The rest of the group had milled in and had taken seats in the audience watching Adam. Once he got over the initial nerves, he was good, really good. When they were finished, Adam could hear applause. He blushed, and Dani hugged him. Then she jumped off the stage and left Adam alone.

“That’s was wonderful, Adam”, Mrs. Peppering was walking towards the stage, still clapping. “Now”, she handed him sheet music. “Do you know how to read music, Adam?”

“Um, not really”, Adam was looking at the sheet music.

“It’s ok, just follow the piano and sing the words.” Just then, Mrs. Chortle walked over to the piano and sat down.

“Oh, I know this song”, he said, excitedly.

“Great, honey. Whenever you’re ready.”

The piano began to play, and then Adam opened his mouth to sing.

The audience just sat there, when Adam was finished, stunned. Then Danielle started cheering, and the rest followed. They all came up on stage to hug Adam and congratulate him. “You’re amazing, Adam”, Dani squeezed him.

“Thanks”, Adam was blushing, but felt really good.

“Adam, get ready to work really hard, because you have a lot of catching up to do.” Mrs. Peppering was running up on stage as well, with the real script in hand.

“Um… what?”

“Adam, I want you in this play, please say yes?”

He looked around the stage at all of the smiling faces and melted.   He nodded his head and took the script.

Mrs. Martin drove up to take Adam home. She had Kris in the car; he was just getting back from baseball practice and was still in his uniform, dirty and smelly, with his ball bag in the back seat with him.

“Adam”, she called out when she saw him walking down the steps with Danielle.

He waved at her. “Do you need a ride, Danielle?”

“Um, sure, thanks Adam. And it’s Dani, ok? All my friends call me Dani.”

Adam smiled at that. First day wasn’t too bad’.

The two of them walked towards the car. Kris pulled his bag closer to him so there would be room for one of them.

“Oh Kris, wow. You’re a mess.” Adam was holding his nose.

“Hey, no I’m not.” Kris said embarrassed.

“I’ll sit back here”, Dani offered, climbing into the seat. “Hey Kris.”

“Hi Dani”, Kris answered.

“How did you do today?” She asked.

“Oh, just practice.”

“So”, Dani started, “Adam is amazing, Mrs. Martin, just amazing.”

“Oh, no I’m not.” Adam argued.

Dani patted him on the back. “Nonsense, you should have heard him.”

“I’ve heard him”, Kris piped in.

“Well, I guess I’m the only one who hasn’t heard Adam sing yet. We’ll have to fix that.” Pam teased.

“Come to the play, Mrs. Martin.”

“Of course, but do I have to wait that long?”

Adam shook his head. He was not used to this kind of attention. It was nice, but…

The next couple of days went fairly smooth for Adam. He was making friends, and he found something that he was good at. He spent the evenings in his room with Kris, each doing their homework. And, Adam had a lot of lines to learn for the play. Kris loved to help Adam with his lines, reading the girl parts, and he really loved to hear him sing.

“God Adam, you are really good.” He’d say. “I wish I could sing.”

“You can sing, Kris. I’ve heard you in the shower.”

“You listen to me in the shower?”

“Relax, Kris. I’m not watching you.”

“Oh.” Kris turned a little bit pink.

Kris went back to his homework. Adam seemed so comfortable with himself‘.

“Can I ask you a question?”

Adam picked his head up, “Sure Kris.”

Soon, it was the weekend. That meant Chelsey was coming home. There was no rehearsal on Fridays after school, so Adam and Danielle were able to ride home with Rick and Brent. “Hey guys, wanna grab something to eat before we go home?” Dani suggested.

“Yeah, great idea”, Rick turned the car and they headed to the local diner. It was sort of a hang out for the teens after school.

They parked the car and walked into the restaurant.

“Hey guys”, they heard someone call. Danielle perked up. “Oh hey guys”, she said. “That’s Monte and Longineu. They’re in band”, she said to Adam.

“Oh, cool.” He said looking in their direction.

“Jazz band, not marching.” She added.

“Oh, very cool.”

“And, there’s Tommy.” Dani walked over to them, dragging Adam with her.

Adam perked up at the name Tommy, remembering his friend. But this Tommy looked nothing like him. Tommy had two toned rock and roll hair and ripped jeans. Hot’, Adam thought to himself.

“Tommy”, Danielle squealed as she hugged him and kissed him right on the mouth.

“Hmm, hey babe”, he said, kissing her back, more intently this time.

He’s straight, huh, gaydar’s off a little’. Adam chuckled to himself.

Brent and Rick followed behind them and they all sat down. “Hey guys”, Brent spoke up. “This is my brother, Adam”.

They sort of looked at him funny, but let it drop.

“Adam, nice to meet you”, Monte spoke first.

“I heard about you”, Longineu piped up.

“What?” Adam wondered what he could have heard by this time.

“Singing, man, I heard about your singing.” He looked at his friends, “This guy’s amazing”, he added.

“Really?” The other two chimed in.

They all talked and ate and had a great time. A couple of hours later, Rick stood up, “Hey guys, I have to get home, you three coming?”

“Sure, see you later guys.” Danielle said good bye to her friends. She walked up to Tommy, “Baby, see you later?”

“Sure, mama.” Tommy kissed her and sat back down.

“So Adam”, Monte spoke up. “See you at school?”

“Yeah, see ya”, Adam waved good bye to his new friends.

“So Dani, Tommy is your boyfriend?” Adam asked.

“Oh, sort of. We’ll really good friends and we go out sometimes.”

“So, he’s straight?” Adam said trying not to sound disappointed.

Dani giggled. “Yeah, he’s straight.”

Rick and Brent just looked at each other and snorted.

“So Dani, please tell me I’m not the only gay kid at this school.” he whispered to her in the back seat so the other two couldn’t hear.

“Um, there’s a few that I only suspect. No one is open about it, though.”

“Oh”.

“Adam, just be yourself. I wouldn’t go around advertising your gay or anything, but don’t hide it either.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I guess Larry would really give me a hard time if he found that out.”

“Larry, Larry Quinn?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

“Oh my god, that kid is a total loser. So are his friends. Fortunately, they’re all harmless, too.”

Adam stayed quiet the rest of the way home. They dropped him and Brent off first. “Hey man, see you later?”

“Yeah, Bye guys”, Brent answered. He hadn’t planned on inviting Adam out with them tonight, because well, he wanted to have his own friends and they were all older.

Fortunately, when they walked in the house, Chelsey was home and had practically jumped on poor Adam.

“Hey, Chelsey.” He hugged her back.

Then she walked over to Kris. “Hey, Krissy.”

“Chelsey”, he whined.

“Krissy?” Adam snorted.

“What?”

“So, what are we going to do tonight?” Chelsey asked cheerily.

~~~~
And the weeks went by rapidly. Adam rehearsed after school while Kris was at baseball practice. They’d all meet up for dinner. Mrs. Martin made it a rule that everyone mention something that happened to them that day, or something that they did. It was also a rule that everyone sit at the table together. No exceptions.
Adam usually talked about the play. He was getting excited. He had a solo number, even though his acting part was very small. Adam figured that Mrs. Peppering added the song just for him.
School was going well for him, some kids had figured out that he was most likely gay, but no one seemed to mind much. The girls still though he was ‘super gorgeous’, and all wanted to be his best friend. He did get to be pretty good friends with Monte, Tommy and Longineu. They wanted him in their garage band as their lead singer. Even though he didn’t really have the time, he’d come over and play with them every once in a while.
Home was really good. The Martins made him feel like part of the family, and he was beginning to believe it. There was a part of him that still waited to fuck it all up, but that part was slowly being replaced with better feelings.
Adam had also agreed to therapy. He was going once a week. The therapist saw a rapid improvement in Adam. She told both Pam and Amanda that for all of the damage that was done to him; he wasn’t in such bad a shape as he could have been.
Adam and Kris were becoming good friends, too. They would talk in their rooms in the evenings. Mostly about music and Kris liked to talk about baseball, even though Adam still didn’t really get it. He enjoyed hearing Kris all excited. Every once in a while Kris would ask Adam a strange question. Well, strange for Kris, but Adam thought he knew where this was going to end up. He’d known kids questioning their sexuality, and although Kris have never come out and said ‘Hey I think I’m gay’, he’d ask all sorts of questions about Adam being gay.
Amanda came to visit weekly at first, and then every two weeks. She’d stay for dinner most of those nights and agreed to come and see Adam in the play, which was coming up very soon.
Yeah, all in all, it was turning into a very good year.
I just got caught up by reading all nine chapters (plus the prologues, of course..lol)And I want to say that I'm loving this story. I'm so glad Adam is finally happy and that he kinda knows what the deal with Kris is but he's not pushing the issue.
And the way he handled the bullies was great!
Can't wait to read more! :D
