Summary: Kris has been in the same foster family since he was three. He's a very happy, well adjusted child, but beginning to feel different. Adam is a troubled teen, in and out of group and foster homes and on the street, forced to do things, no child should ever have to go through. This is the story of them. A Kradam Love Story.

A/N: This is a lot different that anything else I've written, there will be some angst. It will break your heart at times, it did mine, but bear with me, it definitely get's better and happier and eventually sexier.

I have no idea how long it will be, at least 50+ chapters. I'll try and update at least twice a week.

Chapter 34

Kris spent two more nights in the hospital and was finally discharged on the third day with a heap of instructions from his physician. Adam promised to make him do everything he was supposed to do and Kris just rolled his eyes.

”What baby? I want to take care of you."

"I know, Adam."

“I also want to make sure that you're completely recovered by your birthday", Adam whispered in his ear.

Kris grinned, blushing at the same time.

The doctor finished talking to Pam and the boys, and then went out to the nurse’s station to sign Kris’s discharge papers. There were also a couple of prescriptions that he wanted Pam to fill. He explained that it was very important for Kris to take his pain medication and continue deep breathing. Taking it very easy for the next couple of weeks was crucial as well, so he put Kris on bed rest for one, probably two weeks, so Kris would be missing at least the first week of school after Spring break.

Pam helped Kris get all of his things gathered while Kris changed into the clothes that she had brought him from home.

As they were leaving the hospital, Adam was telling Kris about all of their friends who wanted to visit him when he got home. The thought just exhausted Kris. He really just wanted to be alone with Adam.

Chelsey and Brent and Ron were all waiting for Kris when they arrived home. Everyone gently hugged him told him they loved him. Kris was really tired and just wanted to lie down.

Adam helped Kris walk up the stairs and into his lower bunk. “Adam I’m sorry; I’m taking your bed.”

“Kris, its ok, baby. Can I lay down with you?”

“Yeah, I’d like that.” Adam laid Kris down and kissed him on the cheek. He walked over and closed the door to their bedroom and then joined Kris in the bed, being extremely careful not to bump him or do anything that might hurt him.

Adam lay down on his side and put his hand on Kris’s hair, brushing it out of his face. Kris fell asleep almost immediately, with Adam stroking his hair and planting little kisses on his face. Soon, Adam was asleep as well.

When Pam came up later to check on Kris, she opened their door and saw the two boys lying together; Adam’s arms around Kris, both sleeping.

She kissed them both gently, to not wake them up, and then quietly shut their door, smiled and shook her head in an unspoken defeat.

Pam emailed the school principal to ask her to return her call since the office was closed for the week. She explained what had happened to Kris and that he'd be out of school for at least a week after spring break and would need all of his homework. She also asked if a tutor could be recommended in case it would be longer.

The principal was very accommodative and assured Pam that they’d make any necessary arrangements to assist Kris with finishing the year and also asked if there was anything else that she could do for him or the family.

She was also very concerned that this could have happened to someone at their school and decided to arrange an assembly on safety issues to inform the children of potential dangers of walking alone.

She had also asked about Adam and how he was taking this. “He feels a little guilty that he wasn’t there protecting him, but he’s fine.”

“Ok, good. Please, if there is anything that I can do…”

Pam thanked her again and promised to keep her informed of Kris’s progress.

Amanda was coming over for dinner the next evening so she could talk to Kris and make sure that he was handling everything normally. They had decided to delay her visit by a day so Kris could rest tonight.

Later in the evening, Adam woke suddenly. He looked over at Kris’s still sleeping form. He gently got out of bed, so not to wake Kris and covered him back up with the blanket. Then he quietly left the room and went down stairs to the kitchen.

The Martins were just finishing eating, but Pam had saved Adam a plate. They sat and talked about the last few days’ events. Pam decided to tell Adam about Ray’s visit and she was right in not telling him while Kris was still in the hospital. He was very upset.

“That asshole came to see Kris?” Pam threw him a look, but then decided not to press it. “Why, to see how badly he’d hurt him? Kris must have been so scared.”

“No, he wasn’t at all. Kris thought he sounded sincere when he said he was sorry that it happened, but that he had nothing to do with it.”

“What else do you expect him to say? Sorry I beat the shit out of you; wanted to see if you were still alive?”

“Adam. No, actually he said that the police already questioned him, and that even though he doesn’t like you guys, he’d never do that.”

“Do you believe him?”

“No, actually I don’t, but I think Kris does, or at least wants to.”

Adam just nodded his head.

“It sounded as if the police had no evidence against him though.”

“Great, so we may never know.”

“No, we may not, Adam. But right now, Kris just needs your support, not you going after who you think did this to him.”

Adam started to protest, but stopped short, because his mom was right. That’s exactly what he wanted to do, but that wouldn’t help anyone. And, Amanda would kill him, he thought to himself. “I know, mom.”

“Good.”

Just then, there was a knock at the kitchen door. It was Dani and the band. “May we come in for just a minute; we wanted to talk to Adam.” Monte spoke for the group.

“Sure, I’ll just get out of your way so you can talk.”

“No, actually we’d like you to hear this too.”

“Ok”, Pam sounded concerned.

“We all went to the police station to give them a statement on what happened at the diner, with Ray and his friends and all.” Monte started.

“Yeah, we thought the more people who collaborated the story of those guys coming in the place, drunk and rowdy, and what Ray said to you…” Longinue continued.

“We thought it couldn’t hurt.” Tommy finished.

“Thanks, guys. That really means a lot”, Adam said. “What did the police say?”

“They said that there was not enough evidence to arrest any of them, and they thanked us for our statements, but it didn’t change anything.” Dani added.

“Oh”, Pam said. “Thank you so much for trying. You guys are really good friends to Adam, and Kris. Adam, I’ll let you visit with your friends alone for a bit. I want to check on Kris.”

After Adam’s friends left, he went into the family room and found Chelsey and Brent watching television. Adam curled up next to Chelsey and laid his head on her shoulder. “How are you doing, Adam? I know this has to be hard on you.”

“Yeah; I’m glad your home, Chels.”

“Aw”, she ran her hands though his hair and pulled him closer.

“What about me?” Brent asked from the other end of the couch.

“You too, Brent”, Adam giggled. “I’m really glad you’re both here.” Adam relaxed into Chelsey’s arms and soon fell asleep.

Pam came in a while later and helped Adam up to bed. Kris was still asleep, so Adam climbed up to the top bunk.

He lay there for a few moments, thinking about Kris and Ray and the attack and how he was supposed to protect him but hadn’t; and his mind was going a mile a minute until he just lost it. He was suddenly racked with sobs and just couldn’t stop. He curled himself into a ball and just cried and cried until he couldn’t anymore.

He fell asleep like that, into a deep slumber; so deep in fact that he didn’t hear Kris at first.

“Adam”, he called again. “Where are you?”

“Baby”, Adam awoke abruptly and jumped down from the bunk to Kris’s side. “You’re awake.”

“I missed you.”

“Aw baby, I’m right here.”

“Can you get in bed with me again?”

“Sure, baby”, Adam pulled the covers down and crawled in the bed next to Kris, always careful not to touch his ribs.

“You can touch me, Adam. The rest of me isn’t broken.” He assured Adam.

Adam giggled, “I know that, Kris. I just don’t want to hurt you.”

Kris looked at Adam’s face and saw the tracks. “Adam, were you crying?”

“Uh, I’m OK Kris.”

“You’re crying over what happened, aren’t you?”

“I should have picked you up.”

“Adam, I told you that I would be with Ethan, you didn’t know. I’m the one who…”

Adam kissed him quiet. “Not your fault, Kris.”

“And it’s not yours either.” Adam nodded and kissed his boyfriend again, this time with a little more passion, until Kris groaned.

“Adam, I wish…”

“I know what you wish. Soon, baby. You have to get better first.”

They kissed for a few minutes and then Adam asked Kris a question.

“Kris, mom said that you believed Ray when he came to see you in the hospital.”

“She told you about that?”

“Yes, but you should have.”

“She didn’t want me telling you while I was still in there.”

“Good call, I would have gone after him or something stupid…”

“That’s what she said.”

“So, you don’t think he did it? You should have seen him when he walked into the diner, all cocky, asking me if I’d seen you.”

“Adam, he showed me something in the hospital and he made me promise not to tell the police.” Kris looked nervous.

“What?”

“He showed me his cell phone.”

“His phone”, Adam looked confusedly at him.

“He showed me the date and time of his phone call to 911. It totally coincides with when they found me and brought me to the hospital. You can’t fake that.”

Adam looked totally shocked. “Ray called 911? What, was he having regrets or something?” He said sarcastically.

“That wouldn’t make any sense though, why would he call if he did it? That would put the suspicion right on him, which is why he begged me to not tell the police.”

“And the way he came into the diner, he was not looking regretful.” Adam said thoughtfully. “He looked like he knew something, though. Maybe he said that, to tell me in his own fucked up way.”

“What did he say?” Kris wanted a reminder.

“He said, ‘So fag boy, where’s your boyfriend?’ “ Adam said in his voice, wincing at the retelling.

Adam decided to himself that he’d have a little chat with Ray.

The rest of spring break was rather quiet and uneventful. Easter was on Sunday, and Adam asked if he could please stay home with Kris. Mr. and Mrs. Martin agreed. They were so proud of how Adam was taking care of Kris. Always making sure he took his medicine and did his deep breathing exercises. They thought the boys could use a little alone time.

“After church, we’ll have a lovely Easter Dinner, ok boys? Behave”, Pam winked at them. She knew that she had nothing to worry about. Kris was still in a lot of pain, and Adam wouldn’t want to hurt him. Unfortunately for the boys, she was absolutely right.

“God Adam, we’re alone for a couple of hours, and we can’t even do anything. This totally sucks.” Kris pouted.

“Aw, baby. I can kiss you, and rub your feet”, Adam offered. Kris rolled his eyes while Adam cracked up.

They spent the next hour and a half lazily kissing and talking about everything but the attack. It was nice; for both of them.
