Back Door Chapter 7/8
The tour had been amazing so far; each show was a success. Kris couldn’t have been happier. He and Adam were growing closer and Kris knew he was falling deeply for the man. He often wondered what would become of them after the tour and was glad that it wasn’t ending with the US portion.
They were finally at the last leg of the tour. They had shows in San Diego, Santa Ana and then ending back in Los Angeles for the final two performances.
Afterwards, they would have two weeks completely off to spend time with family before beginning rehearsal and then flying over to London.
Most of Kris Allen’s band and crew would be flying to their homes the day following the final performance. Adam hadn’t asked Kris where he was going yet. He had hoped that Kris would stay with him. He wanted to introduce his boyfriend to all of his friends.
The busses drove through the southern half of California and finally arrived at their hotel in San Diego. They had the rest of the day free and the next morning. Kris had arranged a private dinner that night for the group. He wanted to be just with Adam, but the troupe deserved a really nice meal in celebration of a successful tour. Besides, he’d have Adam all to himself soon. He hadn’t asked him yet, but he wanted to take Adam home with him to meet his family.
~~~~
They had a very nice meal at the hotel. Kris stood up and spoke to the group, thanking each and every one of them for a successful US stint. Most of the crew was ending their time with Kris Allen here in California and he told them how much they all meant to him and thanked them for all of their hard work and dedication. He also addressed the two bands, giving them several ‘ah’ moments, rehashing memories of their performances.
After dinner, the entire group was going out to a club to party. Adam wanted to stay in with Kris and enjoy some alone time, but Kris thought they should hang out with everyone, since it would be the last time for a while.
Adam reluctantly agreed and went upstairs to change. “You already look great, Adam”, Kris argued.
“Hey, if we’re going to a club, I’m gonna look fierce.” He smirked.
They arrived at the club in cars and were ushered into the VIP section. There were several fans that noticed the arrival of the large group and tried to get a better look. Although everyone recognized Kris Allen immediately, there was small group of cute boys that couldn’t keep their eyes off of Adam.
“Shit, he’s so hot”
“Sexy bitch”
“God, I’d like to take him home”
“Wonder what he’s like in bed?”
…were just some of the comments overheard. Kris tried to ignore them. It was obvious to everyone who they were talking about. Adam. He was hot and sexy and ‘all mine’, Kris kept telling himself. But, Adam looked amazing; he couldn’t blame them for their adulterated thoughts.
However, Adam seemed to like the attention and went over to talk to them. He signed some autographs and took a few pictures. One guy even tried to kiss him, but Adam turned his head. At that moment, he noticed Kris’s face fall. “Hey thanks, guys”, he said as he walked back to his table.
“Who’s the rock star?” One of the guys said, chuckling.
“What? Just some fans wanted to say hi”, Adam shrugged.
“You looked pretty comfortable there, Adam.”
“Kris, did that bother you?”
“No, of course not”, he lied. “Dance with me?” He asked instead.
They went onto the dance floor and Kris held tightly to Adam.
“Baby, they’re just fans. You should understand that”, Adam said, petting the back of Kris’s hair.
“I know. It’s just that…”
“What?”
“Any one of those guys would gladly sleep with you.”
Adam giggled. “Yeah, I’m sure you have a ton of fans that would like to do the same, Kris. Men and women.”
“It just reminded me that…”
“That what?” Adam knew where Kris was going with this and he didn’t like it one bit. “You should stop right there, Kris.”
Kris got the message. He wasn’t trying to start anything with Adam. It wasn’t his fault that he was so damn sexy and boys threw themselves at him. “Just hold me, Adam”, he said instead and put his head on Adam’s shoulder as they slow danced together.
They stayed on the dance floor for several songs, fast and slow. During a dance tune, a couple of the cute boys from earlier began inching their way closer to Adam and Kris. Pretty soon, the two were trying to get in between them. The one started to pull Kris away, while the other got himself up next to Adam and started grinding into him.
Adam didn’t get what was happening, but it looked like Kris was ok with it, so he started dancing with the guy. What he didn’t realize was that the one with Kris, had him by the arm, pulling him away from the floor. They weren’t dancing; Kris was being forcefully led away from Adam.
Kris looked back and saw Adam dancing with the asshole and he stormed back to the table looking livid. “What’s up man?” Cale asked his friend.
“Nothing”, Kris huffed as he downed his drink and ordered another.
Adam realized quickly that Kris was gone and saw the other guy smirking. “What are you up to?” He accused.
“I wanted to get you alone”, he admitted. Not even trying to look sorry for it.
“What? Not cool, man”, he abruptly left the floor to find Kris and practically ran into the other guy who tried blocking his way until he saw the look on Adam’s face.
Adam found Kris who was feeling a little tipsy after guzzling two vodka martinis. “Oh, you remembered me?” He said, sarcastically.
“Kris, I am so sorry. I did not mean for that to happen.”
“Well, you seemed to be enjoying yourself, so…” Kris said, nonchalantly, but inside he was reeling.
“Kris, look at me.”
Kris looked at him and then looked away and started talking to Cale. The rest of the group just stared at him and Adam got the feeling that they were all talking about it before he got there.
This wasn’t his fault and he didn’t stay with that guy. Adam was getting pissed.
He heard one of Kris’s band members mumble, “Always a player” and then, “Well, he dressed the part”. Kris sort of snorted and downed his drink.
Adam felt himself boiling and stormed off. He took a cab back to the hotel. He walked to his and Kris’s room and looked around at all of their things mingled. “I can’t stay here.” What was I thinking? Of course the band and crew are going to side with him. Have they always thought this? Then his thoughts went back to Isaac’s comment and he cringed. ‘I’m not a player’, he thought out loud and sat on the bed, pulling out his phone. He texted Tommy: ‘Can I room with you tonight?’
Tommy excused himself from the table, which was getting into a heated discussion. In fact, ‘Back Door’ was a little uncomfortable with the other’s talking about their lead singer and friend that way.
“Just for the record”, Tommy started. “Kris could do worse than Adam.” He walked out of the club and pulled out his phone to answer Adam, ‘Sure buddy. Ashley can stay with Cam tonight.’
The rest of ‘Back Door’ got up and left the club. Kris was on this forth drink and feeling no pain. “What’s their problem?” He slurred.
Getting back to the hotel, Neal charged his way up to Adam’s room and knocked loudly.
“Not now, Kris”, Adam said from the other side.
“It’s me, Neal”, he called out.
Adam opened the door and sat back on the bed.
“Kris is an asshole”, his brother blurted, trying to make Adam feel better. “And, he’s drunk.”
“I’m staying with Tommy tonight; can you help me get my stuff?”
“Yeah, sure thing.”
There was no more talking, just packing. Adam and Neal were just leaving when a very drunk Kris came through the door.
“Are you leaving me?” He was wobbling and talking very deliberately. ”I knew it.”
“You knew what, Kris?”
“That you’d do this to me one day.” Kris wasn’t feeling very well. He stumbled over to the bed and fell over, landing on the floor.
Adam was too pissed to help, so Neal told him to leave. “Come on buddy”, he said to Kris, helping him up and to the bathroom.
Adam felt the tears welling, and he knew he had to get out of there. He closed the door and went to Tommy’s room.
~~~~
Tommy opened his door and pulled Adam into a hug. “Sorry man. That was so messed up.”
“I didn’t do that on purpose”, he said.
“I know that. And deep down, so does Kris.”
“They all think I’m a slut and not good enough for Kris.”
“No they don’t, Adam.”
“Yeah, yeah, they do”, he was wiping the tears now falling freely down his face.
“I just think that everyone just needs to calm down and sober up.”
Adam remembered Kris and the shape he was in. He quickly texted Neal: ‘How is he?’
It took several minutes for Neal to respond. He had led Kris into the bathroom, just before he puked; fortunately making it to the toilet. After that, he started crying. Neal helped him change and get into bed. He fell asleep almost immediately.
‘He’s fine. Sleeping it off.’
‘Thanks, bro.’
~~~~
Fortunately, they could all sleep in the next morning, because Kris was hung over and his head was throbbing. He sat up; rubbing his eyes and then fell back on the bed, remembering the previous night. What the hell have I done? He tried calling Adam’s cell, but he’d turned if off. Then he dialed Tommy’s room.
Tommy answered, knowing that it was probably Kris. “Yeah?”
“Is Adam there?”
“He’s still sleeping Kris. We’ll meet you downstairs for breakfast.”
“Oh, ok.”
Kris didn’t want to have their first meeting in public, so he showered and dressed and padded over to Tommy’s room and started to knock on the door as Tommy opened it to go downstairs. “Kris, I thought I told you we’d meet you down stairs.” He said sternly.
Kris peeked in the door and saw Adam still in bed. “He’s not coming with you is he?”
“No”, Tommy said, pushing Kris out and then closing the door to his room. “Come on, Kris. He wants to be alone right now.”
The entire way down the elevator and through the lobby, Kris kept apologizing to Tommy, “I was so stupid”, “I didn’t mean it”, “How do I make this up to him?”
Tommy kept quiet until they were just outside of the hotel restaurant. “I don’t know Kris. You guys all made Adam feel really bad last night. I don’t think he wants to face any of you right now.”
That stopped Kris. And he realized just what a mess he’d made of things. He needed to address the group first and make it clear that he fucked up, and Adam deserved an apology from all of them. “You’re right, Tommy.” Kris walked tall into the restaurant and found the group seated with menus in their hands. He also noticed that ‘Back Door’ was sitting together and not talking with the rest.
Kris let everyone ordered breakfast first, and then, “Um guys”, Kris began, trying to get their attention. Then he looked directly at Neal and the band. “I, no, we”, he pointed to his crew and band, “All owe you, yes you first, an apology. I was pissed last night at Adam, but I should not have allowed everyone to get involved in that. It was private business. I’m sorry. We made you feel uncomfortable and that was uncalled for.” There was some shuffling in seats and Kris’s group realized how badly they had all behaved.
“Something happened on the dance floor last night, but it wasn’t Adam’s fault. I made it seem as if it was, and my band was just defending me. Thank you guys, but it was only Adam and mine’s business. I have no excuse for my behavior except that I love him, and I was hurt and jealous and it brought up old feelings for me.”
Kris kept going and everyone understood and felt really badly for the way they treated Adam last night. Kris didn’t realize that Adam had come down to breakfast and was standing several feet from him listening to the entire apology. It helped, but he wasn’t ready quite to forgive yet, or sit with them and pretend it didn’t happen, so he fled.
