Brother Love - Chapter 71
Adam and Kris spent the short drive back to the hotel talking in the far back seat about their visit with Joan. "I just can't believe that she knew nothing about your mom." Kris whispered, perplexed.
"She kept it a secret from everyone”, Adam concluded. “I guess I should be grateful. One less adult to be disappointed in," he said thoughtfully, thinking back to the guys at the bar.
"Maybe Jerry and Terrance didn't know either?"
"But they said they did, sort of." He wondered.
Meanwhile, up front, Ron and Pam were quietly discussing their visit to the bar and their conversation with those two.
“Maybe we should just let it go?” Ron asked.
“I think Adam would want to know everything.”
~~~~
They got back to their rooms to get changed. Adam didn’t want to think about Joan or the bar or anything else for a while.
After a quick make out session on the very comfortable bed, they got dressed, and met everyone in the suite, and they all walked down to the pool together.
They were several sunbathers along the deck and a few kids splashing in the pool. The Martins found an empty table to put their things on and then a couple of lounge chairs that were free. Adam wanted to swim, burn off some steam, so he cannon-balled into the water yelling for Kris to join him.
After some much needed ‘play time’, the boys got out of the water and joined Ron and Pam at the table.
“So can we talk about today?” Adam asked, sitting down, wrapping a towel around himself.
“Sure sweetie. How was your talk with Joan?”
“Weird”, he said, looking at Kris.
“What do you mean?”
“She didn’t know anything about my mom or anything really. Oh, except she knew that she had a drug problem.”
Adam went on to tell the entire conversation. How she thought that Leila had a second job waitressing. He huffed, saying that.
“She had no idea that she was a whore or made me one”, Adam said, cringing.
“Well, maybe she was embarrassed”, Pam suggested.
“She should have been”, Adam yelled. “Anyway, Joan told me that she talked to my mom a lot, and she said that my mom loved me and was trying her best”, he shrugged. “I don’t know…”
“Maybe she was, Adam. Drug addition can make people act in ways that are inconceivable to most of us. It’s not an excuse, however.”
It was always nice talking to mom. She made Adam see things better.
“Well, I wasn’t sure if we should tell you about our little chat with Jerry.”
Adam sat straight, “Yeah, I want to know what you talked about.”
“Well, dad… both of us, were about to lay into him for allowing the exploitation of a minor to go on under their noses, but he opened up first.”
“Adam was such a sweet little boy”, he started. “Leila had worked for years at the bar and we knew she had problems. But, I run a business here, not a counseling service, so we try and stay out of our employee’s lives, you know?”
Pam and Ron weren’t sure where this was going.
“As long as they come to work and don’t steal, we don’t worry about anything in their personal lives.”
Pam nodded in understanding.
“Anyway, Leila had that sweet boy, and she’d talk about him all the time. We never saw him much at first. When she was working, Joan, upstairs would watch him. When he was around eight or nine, she started bringing him to the bar when she worked. We argued about it at first, but he was a good boy; stayed out of trouble. Anyway, when he was a little older, we gave him a job, which he seemed to truly appreciate.”
He stopped for a moment.
“We had absolutely no idea that Leila was a prostitute at first. She kept that totally separate from her life here. We knew that she’d been in jail a couple of times, but we just thought it was for drugs. We did know about that problem. Anyway, when Adam was about twelve, I guess, it was pretty obvious to everyone that he was gay.”
Pam looked at him questioningly.
“He paid more attention to the men than to the girls on stage, that’s all I meant. Anyway, Leila noticed too, one night and I don’t really know exactly what happened; it was just a rumor, that she forced a man on him.”
Pam and Ron both looked horrified.
“I confronted her when I heard the story from one of the girls several days later. She totally denied it. But, she kept him away from us after that. I even called child services.”
“You did?” Ron spoke.
“Of course, I did. But, she begged us not to let them take Adam away. And she’d never do that to him again, and so on…”
He looked at these two caring adults and his heart broke for Adam. “I’m so sorry. I should have done more.” He actually cried.
“And that’s basically it.”
“Do you believe him?” Kris asked.
“There’s no reason not to. Anyway, that’s about when you two came back and then we left.”
Adam just nodded. ‘At least they weren’t ok with everything.’ “Thanks mom.”
“You’re welcome, sweetie.”
“You know, I thought that this trip would bring closure. I was going to waltz into that bar and prove to them how far I’d come. But when I went in there, they were so happy to see me and truly glad that I was ok. Now, I don’t really know how I feel. It’s not really about proving me to anyone other than… myself.”
“That is what it comes down to, isn’t it?”
“Do you regret coming at all, Adam?” Ron asked this time.
“No. I lived here for years, but never really saw it, you know? I’d never even been to the beach, not once. Now, I’ve gotten to see the better part of Hollywood and California, thanks to you two.”
He stood up and gave his parents a hug.
“Now, I just want to put all of this behind me. Forgive everyone I should, and let everything else just go.”
“I agree, sweetie.”
“Well, we better get ready for dinner and the show, I think”, Ron said, looking at his watch.”
“We’re seeing wicked”, Adam squealed. “I’m so excited.” He jumped up, ready to go.
~~~~
Ron called ahead to make a reservation at Dillon’s Irish Pub, but they didn’t take them. “We better head out, then”, he told everyone, hoping that they wouldn’t have trouble getting in.
They took a cab to the restaurant which was right near the theatre. Ron double checked his pockets for the tickets and they headed out.
The restaurant was crowded when they arrived, but they were seated right away. Brent and Ron noticed the big screen TV on the way to their table. “Dad, this would be a cool place to watch a game”, he noticed several dudes at the bar yelling to the television.
“Yeah it would; thirty different kinds of beer”, he high-fived Brent. That earned a look from Pam and snickers from the rest.
They ate burgers and salad and then paid the check. Adam was anxious to get to the theatre. “I’ve been waiting so long for this”, he said dreamily.
The crowd of theatre-goers was ushered into the lobby as the doors of the Pantages opened. Adam wanted to find their seats right away so they handed their tickets to the usher and were shown their third row orchestra seats. “Oh my God, these are amazing.” Adam commented as they were seated. “Dad, I don’t even know what to say.”
“Well, thank my boss”, he chuckled, taking his own seat.
Kris and Brent wanted to head out to the lobby to check out the food, of course. But Adam wanted to stay put. “You go ahead, baby”, he urged Kris.
Adam and Chelsey chatted happily about what they knew of the musical. “I always wanted to do this one in high school. It’s one of my favorites.”
“I just love the nice witch, what’s her name?” Chelsey asked.
“Elphaba?” Adam laughed, knowing that’s not what she meant.
“No, the blonde.”
“Well, in this story Elphaba is the nice one, Chels”, he laughed. “But you’re talking about Galinda”, he said, accentuating the ‘a’, as the character does in the play. “My favorite is Fiero. I hope he’s awesome.” Adam could so picture himself up there. He couldn’t wait to get to college and start performing again.
Kris and Brent came back with their arms full. “Didn’t you two eat enough at the restaurant?” Adam giggled.
About ten minutes later, the theater got dark, announcing curtain time. Adam was bursting with excitement.
~~~~
The first half of the show was amazing. Adam couldn’t stop clapping. The girls were great. The singing was awesome, but when Fiero came out of that cart, sleepily, Adam was mesmerized. The guy playing him was really good and had a great voice, but Adam saw himself up there.
The intermission was about twenty minutes long, so they entire family shuffled into the lobby to stretch, use the restroom, get more snacks (Brent).
“I want to meet them”, Adam said. “I wonder if that’s possible.” He asked looking around.
The lights went down again, as the second act begun. Adam’s favorite song was ‘As Long as You’re Mine’, of course. He thought the actor did a fabulous job. He wondered if he’d ever get to New York to see it on Broadway. He remembered Bill, Tanner’s brother, who lived there and thought, maybe one day.
After the show was over, Ron urged everyone to follow him. They headed out of the Theatre exit and then walked around to the back.
“Where’ we going, dad?” Brent asked, running to catch up.
“It’s a surprise for Adam”, was all he said.
They reached the stage door entrance. There were a few others, but not many, so Ron was able to get them right to the door.
“What’s going on?” Adam asked this time.
“Just wait”, Ron said, pointing to the door.
A few minutes later, some of the actors came out and were willing to talk to the fans, take pictures and sign autographs.
“Oh my God, dad.” Adam exclaimed.
Fiero came out after a few of the minor characters, and Adam was able to talk to him. The guy was really nice. Adam told him he was in beginning theatre arts school in the fall. The guy looked Adam over, much to Kris’s chagrin.
“You should come out here and try your luck in the theatre. We’re always looking for new blood”, he said. Finally Elphaba and Galinda came outside.
They got autographs from everyone, Pam had thought to bring paper, and Adam took pictures with several of the cast members, including Fiero and the two leading ladies.
He thanked all of them, beaming the whole time as they walked around to the front of the theatre to catch a cab.
“I don’t think I liked the way that guy was looking at you”, Kris pouted.
“Aw, baby. You’re the only one for me. Besides, I don’t think he meant anything by it.”
But Kris held a little tighter to Adam after that. ‘One day, someone amazing is going to try and steal him away’, he thought.
“Anyone tired yet?” Pam asked the group.
No one was, so she suggested that they walk back to the Dillon’s and have some dessert and coffee before heading back to the hotel.
“Great idea, mom.” Was the general sentiment.
~~~~
The Irish Pub was just as crowed as it was for dinner, but again, they were seated immediately. The waitress brought them six decaf coffees, Pam insisted.
They got two orders each of Chocolate Mousse Cake, NY Cheesecake and ‘The Hollywood’, which was a lava fudge cake with ice cream and a whisky caramel sauce which they shared between the six of them.
Afterwards, they caught a cab back to the hotel. Pam asked the group if they wanted to watch a movie together, but Adam asked if he and Kris could go back to their room. He had a lot to think about and just wanted to relax.
“Sure, sweetie”, she said kissing them both on the cheeks. “Get a good night sleep, and we’ll see you in the morning.” The next day, they were going to Universal Studios.
Adam and Kris said goodnight to everyone and ran down the hallway to their ‘very private’ room. “God I couldn’t wait to get you alone, baby”, Adam said, as he peeled away Kris’s clothing, kissing him everywhere.
