Brotherly Love - Chapter 82
The weeks were getting busier for Adam. Not only was he swamped with his classes, they were starting to have rehearsals on the weekend and he couldn't always come home. Kris spent as much time with him as possible, but with his schedule, it was getting more and more difficult for them to be together.
Halloween was coming up in a week, and Allison was having a party and all of their friends would be there. Desmond was invited, too. “What are you going to be, Kris?” He asked him at school one day.
“I don’t know”, he shrugged. “Adam usually picks out our costumes.”
“Don’t you ever do anything without him?”
Kris shot him a look, “Yes.” Not that it was any of his business.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean anything by that.”
“It’s alright.” Then he laughed, “Actually no, not really.”
~~~~
“Hey baby”, Kris sat on his bed as his phone rang. He always knew when it was Adam.
“So, I don’t think I can come home this weekend.”
“Oh”, Kris was really disappointed. He had wanted Adam to come to the party with him.
“I’m sorry, baby. But I have a huge exam and we have rehearsal early on Sunday”, Adam was feeling tired.
"It's ok", Kris sounded so sad.
“Hey, Tommy’s going home, why don’t you come here for the weekend?”
“Allison’s having a Halloween party on Saturday night”, he wasn’t trying to guilt Adam into going, but…
“You should go, Kris.” Adam didn't want him missing out on a party with his friends.
“But what about you?”
“I’ll be busy anyway. It’s ok, baby.”
“Do you want me to come at least Friday?”
“Yeah, I’d like really that.”
Kris hung up the phone. Now he’d have to come up with something to wear on his own.
~~~~
After school on Friday, Kris drove to Adam’s. It had been a really long week and he missed him terribly. He’d have to leave in the morning for practice, but at least they’d have tonight.
They walked to the cafeteria for dinner and sat with Adam’s theatre friends. Kris mentioned the party. “So, what are you going to be?” One of the girls asked.
“I have no idea.”
“Baby, why didn’t you ask me to help you?” Adam asked him, almost sounding hurt.
Kris shrugged, “You’re busy and…”
“We could all help you”, the girl offered.
Adam brightened up, “Yeah, of course.”
“What?” Kris looked frightened. This could only turn out embarrassing for him.
After dinner, Adam’s friends practically dragged Kris to the theatre room. They had this huge closet of all sorts of costumes. “Are we allowed to be in here?” Kris asked, not wanted to get everyone into trouble.
“Sure, babe; I texted Ms. Fisher and she’s meeting us here to help you pick something out.”
“College is pretty cool”, Kris decided.
After about six different changes, they finally found the right look for Kris. “You look amazing, baby. I wish I could go with you.”
“Adam, why not?” One of the other girls asked.
“We have rehearsal on Sunday; I have an exam to study for, etc, etc…” He just talked himself into it. “You know, you’re right. Help me pick out something too.”
“Really?” Kris beamed.
“Yeah. I can study anytime”, he smirked.
They ended up changing Kris's outfit one last time to match Adam's. They looked perfect.
The boys spent the rest of the evening and night in Adam's room. It was nice being all alone, even though Adam’s bed was small. Kris didn’t care. He wanted to be as close as possible to him.
In the morning, Kris drove them home. Adam took all of his books with him and studied in his room while Kris was at baseball practice. They had dinner at home and then got ready for the party.
“Thanks for coming with me”, Kris nuzzled his head into Adam’s shoulder.
“You’re welcome. You always do things with my friends. I should hang out with you and your friends, too.”
Adam would be the oldest guy there, but he didn’t care. He was doing this for Kris.
~~~~
Des was in his room playing Modern Warfare when he appeared. “So, what are your plans this weekend?” Bryson asked cunningly.
“I’m going to a party.” He shot at Bryson’s character.
"Really?" He sounded intrigued. "Will the kid be there?"
"You mean Kris? Yeah, he'll be there.”
"Well", he started to shout. "When the hell were you going to tell me?"
"Never", Desmond spat. "He's not going to be alone; all of our friends will be there."
"Oh, now it's our friends, huh?"
"Yeah, thanks to you, I actually have friends now", he said, sarcastically.
"How sweet. I can take it all away, you know."
"Whatever. I gotta go."
Des cut off the game which cut off Bryson and his threats.
What a dick. He wasn't sure how far he could push the guy, but it seemed to him that Bryson had a lot more to lose than he did.
Desmond went downstairs to his group leader to ask him for ideas on a Halloween costume. The younger kids went trick or treating, so maybe they had something he could wear also.
~~~~
Adam and Kris got dressed at home in Kris’s room. “You look amazing, baby”, Adam stood and stared at Kris through the mirror.
“You don’t think I look silly?” He asked, as he tilted his feathered hat.
“You’re the hottest Peter Pan I’ve ever seen.”
Kris rolled his eyes. “You’re the hot one Captain Hook.”
Adam grinned at the two of them. “We look great together.”
“Thanks, Adam”
“You’re welcome, baby. I love you.”
“Alright you two”, Chelsey yelled from the hallway. “The rest of us want to see your costumes, too.” She and Brent had come home unexpectedly for the weekend.
“Be right out, Chels”, Adam called back. He turned Kris around and kissed him, careful not to mess up their makeup, and then they went downstairs to show off for the family.
Pam insisted on taking a million pictures before the boys left for Allison’s house.
~~~~
The party was fun. Not like college parties, though. But, Adam and Kris were a hit with their semi-professional looking costumes. Desmond found himself a little out of place, with his obvious make-shift one. But, no one seemed to care, so he decided not to, either.
They ate, talked and danced. Allison convinced Adam to get up in front of everyone and sing karaoke with her.
Everyone had a great time, even Desmond. When the party was breaking up, however, Des didn't seem anxious to leave.
"Do you have a ride?" Alli asked him, casually.
"Um...", he hesitated. “It's ok, I can walk home."
Adam overheard, "We'll give you a lift, alright?"
On the way home, Adam asked Desmond if his parents weren't home.
"Uh, no", he answered. Kris hadn't told Adam about Des’s situation and he wasn't about to in front of him. "Um, thanks for the ride, Adam. See you at school, Kris."
"Bye, Des."
Adam drove off. "So who lets their kid go to a party with no ride home?" He asked out loud.
"He's in a foster group home."
"Oh?" Adam didn't like to think back to those days at all, so he dropped it. He had no good memories till he got to the Martin's. He reached out for Kris's hand and squeezed it tight,
Kris understood, and said nothing more.
~~~~
The next day, Kris dropped Adam off at school and then they didn’t see each other for an entire week, when Pam, Ron and Kris came for Parents weekend. Adam showed them around and then his theatre department was having its first performance. Adam was excited to be performing again, but really wanted to be singing. He hoped for a musical in the spring.
Over the next few weeks, Adam and Kris only saw each other on the weekends; and before they knew it, the Thanksgiving break was upon them. Adam, Chelsey and Brent would be home for five days. Pam was excited to have everyone home for a little while.
Kris drove to school to pick Adam up on Tuesday after his classes. Tommy was already gone, so they stayed in the room and made love all afternoon, until it was time to head home.
Chelsey and Brent had just gotten in too, and Pam and Ron decided to take the family out for dinner. Pam told everyone about her new job at the agency with Amanda.
“It’s really good to see you happy, mom”, everyone agreed.
“I like being busy, and I just missed all of you.”
Kris had classes on Wednesday morning, so Adam helped Pam and Chelsey get ready for Thanksgiving. The Martin clan would be coming for dinner and to watch football. It was a tradition that Adam had grown to love. He especially liked seeing Grandmother Martin. She was a hoot. Amanda and Tanner would be there too.
They came over early the next day, so they could enjoy the parade together and then some football. It was really nice having the entire family together.
When it was time to go around the table and say what everyone was thankful for, Adam looked at Kris, and then the rest of the family before saying, ‘closure’. Everyone understood. He’d been through a lot that summer. Amanda and Tanner smiled at each other before announcing that they were having a baby.
Everyone congratulated them. Adam stood up and gave Amanda a hug. “You are going to be an amazing mom, Amanda.”
“Thank you, Adam.”
After spending the rest of the afternoon watching the games on television and eating pumpkin pie, it was finally time for everyone to go home.
Once the family was alone, Pam suggested that they have a family movie night. “We haven’t done that in a while.”
Adam and Kris fell asleep in each other’s arms near the end of the movie, and Pam didn’t have the heart to wake them up, so she just laid a blanket over them, as the rest of the family went to bed.
Adam woke up early in the morning and nudged Kris awake. “Baby, let’s go upstairs”, he whispered. They didn’t want to sleep apart, so they crawled into Kris’s bed and promptly fell asleep.
When they woke up the next morning, they realized they were alone. Now that they were older, and Adam in college; the rules sort of melted away.
They stayed in bed for a long while and then finally got up and showered, ready to meet their friends.
They spent the rest of the weekend with the family. Chelsey and Brent were leaving Sunday morning for school. Adam didn’t have to go until the early evening. Tommy was picking him up this time.
Soon, the house was quiet again, and Pam and Kris sat in the family room, watching television, missing everyone. Ron came in the room and suggested he take them out for dinner to cheer them up.
~~~~
The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Break went fast. Both Adam and Kris were busy with school, but Adam was able to come home every weekend. He soon realized that he wasn’t having as much fun in theatre as he was in his music classes, and had talked to Justine about not being in another play until the spring musical. She understood. She knew kids like Adam. He didn’t want to be an actor as much as he wanted to sing.
Kris spent most days at the diner with his friends. He wasn’t involved in an after school activity until baseball in the fall.
Desmond had gotten pretty close with the group. Bryson had stopped pestering him all of the time about Kris, but he knew it was just a matter of time before he brought it up again. Soon, he’d forgotten all about it.
The kids were at the diner one afternoon, talking about New Years Eve. They told Des about the past years and the band playing at Monte’s party. He asked if they would play this year. He still hadn’t gotten to hear them, other than that one time when he was sneaking around the storage unit. Kris had no idea, but made a mental note to talk to Adam about it. He was sure that something was being planned.
About a week before Christmas, Desmond was playing PS3 in his room, and he heard the familiar pop of another player joining his game and then his voice came through the speaker, “Miss me?” Bryson sneered.
Desmond just rolled his eyes and shot at his character.
“So, plans for New Years?”
“I don’t know”, he really didn’t but had hoped that his new friends would be doing something; something that he didn’t want to share with Jackass.
“Well good, because I have an idea.”
That didn’t sound good. “What?” He asked.
“In good time, Des. Catch you later.” And then he was gone.
Des shut off the game and lay down. He should have known Bryson wouldn’t give up. He didn’t want any part of it, though.
He turned out the lights and fell into a restless sleep.
