Brotherly Love - Chapter 90 Part 1
The family was ecstatic at the news of going away to the beach for a week. They chatted all through dinner about what they wanted to do on their spring vacation. Last summer they’d gone to California, so it had been nearly two years since they’d been at the beach house in Lake Balboa. Pam was just glad to have the whole family together again.
After dinner, everyone went upstairs to pack. They were leaving first thing in the morning. Adam, Chelsey and Brent hadn’t unpacked from college yet, so they didn’t have much to do.
Adam went to Kris’s computer and transferred a little money from his ‘trust fund’ as he now liked to call it and put it in his checking account for the trip. He could at least take the family out to dinner a couple of times, and buy some new clothes. Then he remembered the band getting together, “Kris?”
“What about practicing with the guys?” Adam felt a little guilty abandoning them.
“Oh, I guess we better call them. I want to go to the beach”, he said, excitedly.
“Yeah, me too.” Adam pulled out his phone and texted Dani and Tommy.
A few minutes later he got two texts. The first one, ‘Sounds like fun, guys.’ And then, ‘No worries see you when you get back.’
With that done, he and Kris got ready for bed. “Sleep with me tonight, Adam?” Kris was propped up on the bathroom counter watching Adam wash his face and brush his teeth.
“I’d like that, baby.” There’d be no sex, of course, but Kris liked to snuggle against Adam’s warm body as they fell asleep in each other’s arms.
They both called downstairs to Pam and Ron and said goodnight, and then carefully closed each of their doors. Adam got into his sleep pajamas and then met Kris in his room. Kris was already lying down in his bed, the covers pulled down, waiting for Adam to join him. Adam crawled in next to him and they kissed. “Good night, baby.”
The next morning, they got up early and finished packing and took their bags downstairs where the rest of the gang was just sitting down for breakfast. “Let’s eat and then get on the road”, Ron instructed the group. There was cereal this morning, so they could clean up quickly. Pam decided that they could go shopping in town after they arrived, so they didn’t have to pack any food.
They were in the new Suburban and ready to go an hour later. Kris and Adam piled into the back, with Chelsey and Brent in the middle and Ron and Pam up front. They settled into their seats and then they were off.
Since they hadn’t had much time to talk the last night, Pam wanted to know how school was going for her older kids so far this year; especially Chelsey and Brent, since they didn’t get home as often as Adam.
Chelsey would be graduating this year, and she was already applying to graduate schools in the state. She had changed her major to social work so it took her an extra year. She saw how rewarding Amanda found her work and wanted to follow in her footsteps. And, she wanted to help kids like Adam and Kris.
Brent talked more about his friends and the parties, than his classes, much to Pam’s chagrin. “Don’t worry, mom. I’m keeping an eye on him”, Chelsey assured her mom.
They all wanted to hear about Adam’s spring musical. He told them all about his character, Angel. “I really love it, but…”
“It’s not high school, right?” Chelsey observed. Adam had been sort of a big shot there, and now he was a little fish in a pool of over achieving drama geeks.
“No, definitely not. It’s ok, though. I’m learning a lot.”
But Adam didn’t sound as enthused any more. That worried Kris a little, but he kept it to himself.
“I wish you guys could see me perform”, Adam hoped out loud.
“We’ll definitely come back for that, Adam”, Chelsey insisted. “We’ve never missed a play of yours yet.”
Adam smiled, “Thanks, I’d really like that.”
“So, Kris”, Chelsey changed the subject, “How’s baseball?”
“Great! We have a new catcher, he’s awesome. Oh, and I hit a home run the other day; well, in practice. Mom, the coach wants us in this camp this summer. It’s only for a week in June.”
“That’s fine, Kris.”
“Yeah, it’s at the University of Arkansas. And we get to work with the college coaches”, he sounded excited.
“Baby, that’s incredible. When did you find out?” Adam asked.
Kris shrugged, “Just a few days ago. I was going to tell you this week.”
“That’s ok, baby. We’ve both been busy.”
They finally arrived at the beach house and unpacked the car. Adam and Kris carried their bags up to their room. When they walked in they gasped. It was exactly the same as they remembered it.
“Which bed should we take?” Kris asked Adam, seductively.
“Mm, bad baby.”
“Or you can just think about me when you’re all the way on that side of the room”, Kris teased, sitting down on one of the beds.
“You think I’m the one who would cave first?” Adam giggled, going over to the free bed and putting his things on the floor and laying down, his hands behind his head, waiting...
Kris stewed for about ten seconds and then ran over to where Adam was, and accosted him. “You win.”
“I knew I would”, he replied smugly and then kissed the top of Kris’s head.
“Adam, Kris”, they heard Pam call from downstairs. “We’re going to the grocery store, do you want to come?”
They would have said no, but they knew that Ron and Brent would be staying at the house. “Yeah, be right down.” They reluctantly got off the bed and ran downstairs.
“Mom, I want to take everyone out to dinner tonight”, Adam announced as he climbed into the car.
“Adam, that’s not necessary. We’ll go out and eat some.”
“I know, but I want to, please?”
Pam knew how Adam felt about his money and he wanted to share it with his family. He’d been really good lately; mostly because he hadn’t been home. “Sure, Adam. That would be lovely.”
Adam sat back and smiled. He wouldn’t have taken no for an answer.
They bought some things for breakfast and lunches, mostly and when they came home it was already time for lunch.
Adam and Kris helped bring in the bags and then Chelsey helped her mom put everything away while the boys went upstairs to get cleaned up and have a little alone time. They fell onto Kris’s bed this time. Kris remembered the conversation from the car and brought up a sensitive subject, “Adam, don’t you like school?”
“Baby, why would you ask that?”
“I don’t know. You don’t seem really excited about the plays like you did in high school.”
“It’s different, Kris. That’s all.”
“Do you ever think about quitting?”
“No, not really", he shrugged.
Kris nodded in understanding and then rolled over so he was facing Adam. “Please tell me first, if you ever do”, he said, quietly.
“Kris, I’m not going anywhere. I promise”, Adam assured him, kissing him on the top of his head. “I love you, baby.”
They got up a few minutes later and got ready for lunch. Pam yelled up to them and they met everyone in the kitchen. There was lunch meat for sandwiches with all the fixings and chicken noodle soup.
After they finished eating and cleaning up the kitchen, Adam and Kris went down to the beach. They both remembered two years ago when they’d met Melanie on this very beach, right outside their house.
“Remember playing in the sand, baby?”
“We still can, you know.”
“Ok”, Adam sat down began gathering sand. "We need a bucket", he realized.
Just then, Chelsey ran down towards them, carrying some things in her hand. "Sand castles", she exclaimed, sitting down and laying out two buckets and the sand sculpture toys from two years ago.
"There's only one thing that's missing", Adam acknowledged.
"Melanie", Both Kris and Chelsey said at the same time.
"Well, let's make a big one in her honor."
Brent came down right after Chelsey and wanted to help, too. Adam and Kris took turns getting water and wet sand, using it to sculpt the dry sand. After couple of hours, they went back for one last bucket to fill the moat and then all stepped back to admire their work.
"Beautiful castle for Princess Melanie", Adam shouted.
"For me?" they heard a squeaky little voice as the little girl ran towards them.
"Melanie ", Adam caught the girl in her arms as she stormed into him.
"Prince Adam, Prince Kris"
"Hi Melanie", the rest of the Martins kids addressed her.
"I missed you so much. Your mom called my mom to see if we could spend a couple of days with you."
Kris groaned to himself. He loved that little girl, but she did have a way of cockblocking his boyfriend.
Adam turned around, still holding Melanie, to smile at his jealous boyfriend. "Melanie, give Kris a hug, too", he said, putting her down. She ran into Kris's arms and let him pick her up next. "So, are you two still boyfriends?" She asked innocently.
"Yes, Melanie", Kris rolled his eyes to a snickering Adam and Chelsey.
"Melanie, where's my hug?" Chelsey said next.
Once the little girl had hugged all of the Martin kids, including Brent, she looked over their sand castle. "Hmm, it's perfect", she huffed.
"What's the matter, Mel?"
"I wanted to build one, too."
"We can always add on", Chelsey suggested. Melanie liked that idea and took the bucket, handing it to Kris with instructions to get more water, while he muttered something that sounded an awful lot like 'cockblocker'.
After the beach, all of the kids came inside to get cleaned up for dinner. Pam offered to cook, since Shelby and Melanie would be joining them, but Adam insisted on still taking them all out. "Mom, Kris wants seafood", he winked and she knew it was futile to argue with him.
They went out to their favorite seafood buffet restaurant that evening. Melanie wanted to sit between the two boys at dinner, of course.
"So Melanie, do you have a boyfriend yet?" Kris asked, nonchalantly.
"Ew, no. I'm only eight", she rolled her eyes. "Oh, but there's this jerk in my class who called another boy a faggot on the playground last week."
"Really, that’s terrible?" Pam asked, wondering what was coming next.
"What did you do, Mel?" Adam asked her.
"I punched him."
"You did?" Adam exclaimed, suppressing a giggle.
"Yeah, I told him my two best friends were gay and there was nothing wrong with that."
"Aw, that's really sweet", Kris had to admit.
"I got in trouble though."
Shelby stepped in, "I got a call from the principal's office and had to come in with the parents of the child she hit."
"Ooh, how did that go?"
"Well, I had a talk with Melanie, and she stood by what she did and said she'd do it again."
Everyone did giggle at that.
"Then I made Melanie tell both the parents and the principal how she felt about the kid saying that and they understood, but she got detention for a week and had to apologize."
"That's not fair", Kris stated.
"Well, they could have suspended her, so I'm glad for that. And the principal promised to have some sort of sensitivity assembly. Oh and the boy had to apologize to the other little boy."
"Melanie, I'm so proud of you", Adam offered. "It's not always easy to defend someone who's being bullied."
"I know. But if someone was ever mean to you, I'd be so mad and want to hit them too."
"Well, violence never solved anything, but thank you, Melanie." Adam gave her a little wink.
The entire family was proud of Melanie. It's not easy to stand up for your principles, but she's a very strong little girl.
The rest of the meal, they talked about their plans for the next day. Ron had the boat scheduled for the morning.
They went home and Shelby put Melanie to bed and then came down to join the Martin's in the living room.
Adam and Kris asked to go out for a little while. They wanted to walk along the beach.
Once outside, Adam pulled Kris into a kiss. "I wanted to do that all day, baby."
They walked along the edge of the water, illuminated by the moonlight. “You’re beautiful, Kris.”
Kris melted into Adam’s arms like he always did.
They sat down on the sand and let the water wet their toes while they made out. “I want to be with you”, Kris panted.
“You are with me, baby”, Adam giggled.
“You know what I mean.”
“Yeah, I do. We’ll get some time alone, I promise, baby”
They stood up, and dusted the sand off and slowly walked back to their beach house, holding hands.
