Brotherly Love - Chapter 99
Devon smiled at his two friends and told them to order whatever they wanted. “It’s on the house, okay?”
“Thanks. Hey Dev, was that…?”
Devon just walked away, grinning, leaving them even more confused.
“Either Devon really gets around for a newly uncloseted, or it’s all the same person”, Adam commented.
“What do you mean?” Kris asked him.
“Well, at the Halloween party, he was making out with someone, and then Tommy swears that Kenny stayed over and now this.”
“Wait, that was a guy?”
When Adam finished laughing, he said, “Drag club, remember? And there is a really good possibility that that was…”, his voice trailed off.
“Man, this is going to be so weird.”
The boys ordered some food and decided to just enjoy themselves. The club was beginning to fill up and some couples were already on the dance floor. “Do you want to dance with me, Adam?”
“Yeah, baby.”
“Come on, then. Till our food gets here.”
“Thanks, Kris.”
Adam pulled Kris onto the dance floor and they took a spot that wasn’t too crowded and then put his arms around Kris’s shoulders.
“I can’t really dance, you know that.”
“Just hold on to me, baby.”
Kris looked around at the other couples. It was really strange for him, seeing mostly same sex couples. It was refreshing. “I had no idea there were so many guys like us here, Adam.”
“Hmm, this is nice, isn’t it?”
They danced a few more songs, both fast and slow and then noticed their food being delivered to their table. “Let’s eat, Kris.”
They sat down and dug into their chicken fingers and potato skins. Adam also ordered deep fried green beans. “These are so good, Kris.”
They mostly watched everyone around them as they enjoyed their food. There were guys dancing with guys and the few girls that were out there with them were known as the fruit flies. Kris giggled at that term. “So is that what you’d call Allison and Lucy?”
“And Dani”, Adam chuckled. “She’d love to come here with us.”
“We should definitely drag Tommy here, too.” Neither one missing the obvious pun.
A little while later, the music stopped playing and the club manager came on stage to announce the show. “Now, all you guys and dolls out there! Let's get ready for an amazing spectacle of Gurls up here. Everyone ready?" He waited for the applause, then, "Let’s give it up for 'Ivana B. Queen".
Everyone cheered as Ivana B. Queen came onto the stage, with her name flashing in the background. She was gorgeous; tall, blonde wig, six inch heels and long legs in fishnet stockings and a tight red dress that barely covered her ass.
“Damn, Kris.”
“Can’t even tell that’s a man”, Kris said, amazed. “Wonder what he looks like under all that?”
She started lip syncing to an old Madonna song, and moving her hips, trying to rile up the crowd. Most everyone who was sitting at tables got up and lined up on the dance floor, waiting for her to come close so they could stick dollar bills in her ‘cleavage’.
“Do you want to get closer, Kris?”
“No, I’d rather watch from here. If that’s ok with you?”
“Yeah, I feel more comfortable back here, too.”
Devon came by a couple of times to check on them. “Wait till you see the next act”, he winked.
Adam and Kris both just looked at each other. “You don’t think…”
Adam just nodded.
After Ivana B. Queen finished her number, she sauntered off the stage, picking up the tips along the way that had fallen and then the lights changed and out came Tequila Mockingbird.
“Kris, look”, Adam pointed to the gurl coming onto the stage. She was the same one who had kissed Devon and said hello to them. She looked nothing like Kenny. However, the more Adam stared… And then she began to sing. She wasn’t lip syncing like the first one. This one had a voice, a very masculine voice.
“Oh my God, it is him; I mean her.”
Just then, Devon came back over. “Incredible, isn’t she?”
“I’m really confused, Devon.”
“Yeah, I know, but it’s actually very simple, Adam”, he teased.
“Is it, now?”
Devon just smiled.
The show continued with another single act, named Gloriass. And boy did she ever. Both Adam and Kris couldn’t stop staring as she wiggled around the stage to Beyoncé. “Adam, where do they put…, um you know?” He gestured to his pants.
Adam giggled, “It’s called tucking, Kris.”
“Tucking, you mean they…?” His open mouth expression was adorable.
Then it was time for the headliner, Miss Coco Peru who made a spectacular entrance in this huge spectacle peacock dress that she performed one song to, and then ripped it off to expose most of her body in a very tight feather thing that only hid the very basics. Her tuck was quite obvious, or totally invisible, however you looked at it. "Damn, you really can't tell that's a guy at all."
Then all the gurls came out in different outfits for a couple of group numbers, all lip syncing. It was all very showy and quite enjoyable. Adam got such a kick out of Kris's expression at the 'gurls', as they were told they were called.
After the show, the ‘gurls’ came off the stage to dance with some of the guests. Adam noticed Devon looking over at Tequila Mockingbird dancing with some random dude, looking very predatory. However, he was still waiting tables and had to endure the pain of watching his man dancing with another. It was all part of the show, though.
“Man, that was awesome”, Kris exclaimed.
After a couple of more dances, Tequila made her way over to the boys' table and sat down, signaling the waiter for a drink.
"So, what did you think, boys?"
"Kenny, that is you, right?"
Kenny just laughed. "Tonight, I'm Tequila Mockingbird, baby", she flirted.
Devon finally got a break and came over to join them, sitting on 'Tequila's lap and kissing him right there.
"Wasn't my man spectacular?" Devon finally came up for air.
Adam couldn't help his continued surprise and then, "Congratulations", he said, instead.
"Thanks, Adam", Kenny said, blushing from both the kiss and having finally been found out. "So..."
"You're gay! I get it. Why didn't you just tell us, well, I mean me? Obviously Devon already knew..." He was stammering and he knew it, but shit.
"You're the first to know, Adam", Devon replied.
"I won't say anything, it's your news. I will say it's about time, though. You two look good together."
"I've graduated now", he said, blushing from the comment. "I guess it doesn't matter anymore."
"Why did it matter before?" Adam asked, curiously.
Kenny gave Devon a look before continuing. "Uh, well, my parents are both, um, religious."
"Religious?"
"Dad's a preacher and let's just say that it would not be ok for their son to be gay."
"How do you know that?" Adam wasn't sure he wanted the answer to that, while Kris listened, wide-eyed.
"He counsels families in the church against homosexuality; even recommended conversion therapy to a kid that I knew a few years back and I’m sure others, since."
"What?"
"Yeah, so let's just say I pretended I wasn't gay."
"I'm sorry, Kenny. That really sucks."
"Then, I sort of got caught in a, um, compromising situation when I was in high school and..."
"And what?" Kris asked, uneasily,
"They prayed for me."
Adam just raised his eyebrows.
"It wasn't as pleasant as it sounds, ok?"
"Ok."
"Anyway, I just decided to not be gay on my own, and finally convinced them that I was cured of the evil."
“Wow."
"Yeah, but they would always tell me things that would happen to sinners, just to remind me, I guess, in case I slipped or some shit."
"Wow, Kenny", Adam repeated, horrified.
He just shrugged, "Anyway, when it was time to pay for college, they told me that if they ever found out I was acting inappropriately, so to speak, they'd cut me off. I was really 'good', you could say for three years until you showed up this year, Adam."
"What, what did I do?" Adam asked, knowing that he hadn't done anything, hoping that Kris didn't get the wrong idea.
"No, I mean, you were so open about who you were and proud and then Devon here came out and then started hitting on me and shit, well..."
Devon giggled, “I was not hitting on you, babe. I didn't even know if you were gay or not."
"So, I remember at the beginning of the year, thinking you were kind a dick."
They all stared at Adam. "No offense."
Kenny waved his hand, "No, you're right. I was trying to hide it for so long and you were so open and shit. Yeah, I'm really sorry about that."
"I heard you say once that you were glad you weren't playing a fag."
"Yeah, that was pretty dickish of me. Here's the thing, though. My parents had a couple of spies here at school at various times."
"What?"
"I found out the middle of my freshman year that this kid who was pretending to be my friend, well he accidentally slipped. He didn't even realize what he'd said, but I figured it out right away and vowed to be more careful. And that meant acting homophobic at times. In fact when you showed up this year, I thought that maybe you were this year's spy."
Adam just gaped at him.
"You were so open; I thought maybe you were testing me."
"I was just being me, Kenny", Adam tried not sound hurt.
"I know that, and I realized it soon enough, but I could never be too careful."
"So, when did you come out to Devon?"
"Devon was really sweet to me and I don't know, it was a few of months ago."
"Was it before I totally embarrassed you two at the cafeteria?"
"Yeah, actually, it was. We were just friends still, and you did help Devon push me a little. Anyway, it all worked out."
"And that kiss?" Adam was referring the backstage kiss between the two of them.
"Uh, working things out?" Kenny chuckled weakly.
"So, how long have you been doing this?" Adam pointed to the stage.
"Two and a half years."
"But I thought you said you were hiding being gay. This is pretty out, Kenny."
"But Kenny doesn't come here, Tequila Mockingbird does", he asserted.
"Oh, I get it. Wow, double life."
"It was safer this way. But like I said, I've graduated now, and I got a job at this "All Gurl Review" in New York City, and Devon's got accepted into graduate school out there, so we can start our lives together."
"Do your parents know yet?"
"No way! They'd figure out how to take my diploma away or something, I don't know. I may someday, but for now, this is the way it has to be."
"What if they come and visit you in New York?"
"They wouldn't, we’re not really that close. I'm not even giving them my address."
"I'm sorry."
"Yeah, it sucks. But not all parents are as accepting as Devon's", he smiled at his boyfriend.
"I was really lucky. But, I think that my parents handled it better because I was older when I told them."
Adam and Kris stayed quiet, but just nodded their heads.
"What about your parents, Adam? Did they accept you?"
"Yeah, you could say that."
"Huh?"
"Well, let's just say I had the exactly opposite problem from Kenny.”
“What do you mean?”
Adam gave Kris a look, like he would get him out of answering this question. Kris gave a weak smile, encouraging him to go on.
“I haven’t told anyone this at school. Not even Tommy, so…”
“Adam, we wouldn’t say anything”, Devon assured him; Tequila nodding her head.
“No, I know you wouldn’t.” He took a deep breath. Kris squeezed his hand. “My mom was a drug using prostitute in Los Angeles...”
He didn’t tell them everything, just that he spent most of his time in the bar, and realized he liked boys when he was twelve.
“Unfortunately, my mom noticed too and, um…”
“That’s enough, Adam”, Kris knew it was upsetting him to talk about it.
Both Kenny and Devon just hugged him. “It’s ok Adam.”
“Anyway, my mom died. I ended up in foster care and eventually at the Martin’s where I met Kris and turned my life around.”
“That is so romantic”, Devon breathed.
“Kris was thirteen, Dev. And he was such a brat”, Adam said lovingly, looking at Kris.
“Oh. So when did you two…?”
“A couple of years later, but we never did anything serious until Kris turned sixteen. That really was romantic.”
Kris just smiled at Adam, remembering that first night at Brad’s apartment.
“Aw”, Devon and Kenny said together.
“Enough about me. Are we going to dance, or what?”
Adam got up, Kris in tow and the two couples walked out to the dance floor.
“That was brave, Adam”, Kris told him when they were dancing. Adam just squeezed him tighter.
As the evening wore down, Kris and Adam finally said good night to their friends.
“We have to get together before we leave for New York”, Devon insisted.
“Can you come over this week and sign the papers for the lease? Oh, and we’re having a going away party next week, here at the club.”
“Can I bring some friends?” Adam couldn’t wait to bring Danielle and Tommy here.
“Definitely.”
“Hey, Adam. Thanks”, Kenny pulled Adam away for a minute.
“For what?”
“For understanding and also for telling us your story. That means a lot.”
“You’re welcome. I really am happy for you two.”
Adam and Kris left the club and drove back home. It was late and they were exhausted. “I never would have guessed that.”
"You mean Kenny?”
“Yeah, really strange."
"Not really, Kris. He needed an outlet and found it there. I think I totally understand it."
"When you put it that way", Kris nodded. “I can’t wait until you get into that apartment, Adam”, Kris was thinking about what they could be doing tonight.
“I know, baby.”
“We don’t have to go right home, do we?”
“Yeah, we do. But, I’ll sleep with you tonight, ok?”
“OK”
