Driving Me Crazy Chapter 1
Kristopher Allen sat on the edge of his bed, in the room he'd had since he was a child, strumming on his guitar and humming the notes. It felt good to be home again. He'd been away at college all year with only a couple of short visits during the holidays and spring break. But now he was back for the entire summer. He thought about what he wanted to do. Last summer, he’d driven a truck and made pretty good money, but was thinking that he’d stay close by this year. Kris sighed, working out a new tune when his phone rang.
"Rick?" Kris spoke into the phone, already knowing it was his cousin by the ring tone.
"Hey man, can you hear me?" Rick was shouting into the phone, loud music bellowing in the background.
"Yeah man, you're yelling", Kris shook his head.
"Sorry 'bout that. Hey you're looking for a summer job, right?"
"How did you know?" He asked, dully.
"Your mom talks to my mom", Rick skipped the ‘duh’ at the end of that sentence.
"Oh", Kris chuckled. "Right"
"So, you'll never believe who's playing here tonight."
"Who?"
"Adam Lambert"
"Really?" He actually had known that. Kris had wanted to get tickets while still at school, but didn't have the cash. He had forgotten that Rick worked security there.
"I know you have a crush on him, Kris."
"What? NO!"
"Whatever, dude. Anyway, he's on tour and one of the bus drivers broke his leg earlier today, isn't that awesome?"
"Uh, okay?"
"Well, Adam's manager asked me if I knew anyone who could fill in for the next couple of months. What do you think?"
"Of what?"
"Driving a bus?"
"Bus driver, I don't know." His stomach was actually doing flips at the thought of being near Adam Lambert.
"Man, you'd be on tour with a rock star; one you think is really hot; travelling around the country. What's to think about?" Rick was still shouting.
"Huh..." Kris’s brain was in overdrive.
"Dude, get your ass down here before they hire someone else, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'm on my way." Kris pocketed his phone, brushed his hair and ran out the door.
He made it to the stadium in about fifteen minutes, parking his car and then heading inside. He texted Rick and waited for directions.
Rick met him just inside and walked him to where Adam's manager had taken an office. "Sir?" He said, knocking on the door.
"Come in", they heard.
"Hi Dave, this is my cousin. The one I was telling you about."
"Hi sir, I'm Kris. Kris Allen."
Dave stood up and walked over to shake Kris's hand, "Nice to meet you, Kris. Have you ever driven a bus before?"
They spent about twenty minutes talking about Kris's school, his truck driving days and how he had the entire summer off. They talked about music and Kris told him he played guitar and piano. They hit it off really well, and Kris found himself shaking the man's hand and accepting the position.
“The US tour has another two months, will that be a problem?”
"No, it sounds amazing, thank you, Sir… I mean, Dave.”
“Great, it’s all set. Would you like to meet Adam?"
"Yeah", he tried not to sound like a fan boy.
"Oh and here are two tickets for tonight's show”, he said, handing Kris an envelope. “Tomorrow, you'll be getting staff id, so you can see some of the shows, except when you’re sleeping.”
"Well, I guess I'll be driving a bus for the summer.” Kris shrugged as Rick laughed and patted him on the shoulder.
The manager met them outside his office and walked them to Adam’s dressing room. There were still a few hours before the show and Adam was resting. He knocked on the door and Kris could hear a faint, “Come in”, so the man opened the door to reveal the rock star lying on his couch, iPad on his chest and earphones on. His eyes were closed and he was singing softly to the music. Kris couldn’t help but stare.
“Adam”, Dave called.
Adam looked up and took the earphones out of his ears, “Hi”, he said, confused as the sight of two guys in his room. The one he recognized as venue security, but the other one…
“Adam, this is Kris Allen, your new driver.”
“Oh, hey man”, Adam said, standing up to shake his hand. “Welcome aboard”, he winked.
“I’m really looking forward to it”, Kris answered. He didn’t want to start gushing and sounding like a stupid fan, so he stopped.
“I’ll see you at the show tonight?” Adam asked, still holding on to Kris’s hand.
“Absolutely”
“Great, thanks for doing this on such short notice. Kris, right?” He walked back to his couch, and started to put his headphones back on, ultimately dismissing them.
“Yeah”, Kris beamed and then Dave led them out of the room. “I’ll be back in an hour”, he told the star.
Adam waved him off and lay back down on the couch. Kris could hear him singing again and felt his heart coming out of his chest.
“Well, that was Adam. Sorry if he seemed pre-occupied. He likes to relax before he has to get ready for the show.”
“No, I totally understand”, Kris assured him.
“Well, we’ll see you after the show right back here. I gave security your name, so I should have your badge by then.”
“Thank you so much for the opportunity, sir. I really appreciate it.”
Dave winked, “Sure thing, kid.”
Rick walked Kris to the stage area, congratulating him along the way. “You’re gonna have a blast.”
He was greeted by band security and showed him his ticket. The dude just nodded, and led him into the venue which was still empty, except for staff.
“You’re in the VIP section, congratulations”, he droned.
“Thanks, I’m the new driver.”
The dude perked up a little, “Really? Well it’s nice to meet you then…”
“Kris”
“Kris”, he reached out and shook his hand. “I’m Neal Lambert.”
Kris was speechless, but when he regained his composure, Neal had walked away, leaving Kris to his thoughts. That was strange. Then he took his seat in the VIP section. It was off to the side, but he had a really good view of the stage. Kris sat down and pulled out his phone. ‘Thank you so much’: he texted his cousin. Then he put his phone away and waited for the arena to open its doors and fans begin to file inside.
~~~~
Kris had been a fan of Adam’s Lambert’s ever since the guy had appeared on American Idol, but he’d never gotten a chance to see him live till tonight. He’s fawned over the videos from his shows, though and was embarrassed at how much of a fan boy he was of the star. He sat back as fans all around him were up and dancing to the canned music playing through the venue’s speakers and screaming ensued whenever the star’s picture flashed up on the huge screens on either side of the stage.
Kris found himself up and dancing as his section slowly filled with other VIPs who’d come out to support Adam Lambert. Kris recognized a couple of then as friends of the singer’s, but he did a double-take when he noticed a couple of well known celebrities. Trying to remain casual and not spaz out, Kris smiled at the newcomers and just nodded when they sat down next to Kris and said hello.
He pulled out his phone again and nonchalantly texted his best friend, Cale. ‘OMG, I’m at the AL concert sitting next to Kesha’
A few seconds later his phone lit up: ‘Holy Shit, for real? Take her pic’
Kris laughed and shook his head, ‘And look like a dork?’
‘Whatever, dude. Have fun’
They texted back and forth for a few minutes until the lights lowered and the screams became deafening. ‘Gotta go, man, Kris texted last and then put his phone away, standing up with everyone else, as the band came out, playing the intro and then…
~~~~
After the show, Kris filed out along with everyone else. He was stopped however, as he was leaving his section by Adam’s brother Neil. “Follow me”, he told him.
Confused, Kris followed the younger Lambert back stage where they were having a small after party. “Wow, am I allowed in here?” Kris asked as Neal opened the door to the room, revealing some of Adam’s staff and a few people that Kris recognized from the VIP section, including the second runner up from Adam’s American Idol season, Allison Iraheta.
There were trays of food brought in and a full bar already set up in the back. Kris was told to make himself comfortable, which he totally didn’t. He spotted Adam with a guy who Kris figured to be the rock star’s boyfriend. They seemed to be in deep discussion and Adam didn’t look very happy.
Kris walked over to Neal, the only other person in the room he knew and asked if everything was alright. “Oh yeah, that’s just Jason. He gets really uptight after Adam’s shows.”
“Why is that?”
Neal just shrugged, “Hell if I know. Adam’s crazy about the guy for some reason, but he always thinks that Adam’s cheating on him or something with the fan boys.”
“Huh”
“I can’t stand the dude personally”, he huffed, taking a log swig of his beer, leaving Kris wondering.
“So, who are you?” One of the Roadies spotted Kris standing next to Neal.
“He’s the new driver”, Neal told him, and then walked away to speak with Adam’s manager.
“Kris”, Kris introduced himself to the new guy.
“Welcome aboard, Kris; I’m Doug. You met Adam yet?”
“Briefly, today”, he told Doug, wondering why the guy was staring at him and grinning.
“He’s great to work for. You’ll have a blast.”
“I’m looking forward to it.”
“Let me introduce you around”
After he me most of the staff and a few of Adam’s friends, Kris went back to the bar to grab another beer. He couldn’t help staring at Adam and that guy, Jason. They didn’t seem to be getting along any better than before. Then Jason looked at Kris and glared at him, then turning back to Adam. He thought he heard, “So that’s your new driver? Figures”
Wait. He was going to be driving for Adam’s bus?” He must have been staring because Adam shot him a look. His boyfriend saw him, scowled and then stormed off. Adam looked over at Kris apologetically and then downed his cocktail, sadly. Then he signaled his brother to bring him another.
Kris furrowed his brow, wondering what that was all about.
Adam looked bummed for a moment, but then jumped up and began to mingle with his friends. Every once in a while he’d glance over at Kris, who was standing by himself, taking it all in. Adam smiled at him and one time, even winked at him. Swallowing, Kris tried not to pass out. He secretly hoped the rock star would come over to talk to him, but that didn’t happen.
The evening wound down and Dave the manager gave Kris instructions on where to meet them in the morning. It was a hotel night, which was rare, so they were sleeping in and then getting on the road after breakfast.
Kris said goodnight to Dave and a couple of the staff members who he’d met earlier and then took off for home and his own good night sleep. He still had to tell his mother that he’d be gone for the next two months.
