Driving Me Crazy Chapter 2
Kris woke up early the next morning and finished packing. Dave had advised him to pack light, but with enough clothes to last a week at a time. He picked up his guitar, but then thought better of it. “I’m sure I won’t have time to play anyway”, he shrugged, laying it back in its case.
After he was done, his mom drove him to the hotel where he was meeting Dave and the band. He texted Rick in the car to thank him once more and then kissed his mom good bye, grabbed his duffel bag and walked towards the lobby of the hotel, passing the three tour busses. Kris stopped and gasped. They were huge.
“Excited? Or nervous?”
Kris turned to one of the guys he met last night at the party and chuckled. “Oh, extremely”
“You’ll be fine”, he winked, taking Kris’s duffel and tossing it inside the bus. “Come on, everyone is in the lobby. “
As Kris followed the roadie inside the hotel, he saw the entourage gathered. “Ah, our newest staff member, everyone”, Dave walked over to pat Kris on the back and introduce him to the gang. “For those of you who didn’t get a chance to meet him last night, this is Kris Allen, driver.”
They walked into the lobby breakfast buffet, many of them chatting with Kris along the way. They were seated inside and then everyone got up to visit the buffet. Kris chuckled at one of the band members, Tommy. He was this tiny fellow with crazy hair, and boy did he pack on the food, carrying it back to the table. He also noticed how close the band was; sitting and chatting together, like they were family. The only person missing was the Rock Star.
Adam usually had breakfast in his room whenever his boyfriend was in town. Since this was the last hotel night for a while, Adam wanted to make up for the next few weeks until they saw each other again. Jason wasn’t very happy about Adam leaving. After the party, he was giving Adam the cold shoulder and Adam did everything he could to make it easier on him. He used his persuasive charm to eventually convince his boyfriend that there was no one beside him. It worked; till the morning.
After breakfast was over, Dave herded the crew out to the bus. He took Kris aside and gave him some encouraging words and then left him alone. Kris stood outside of Adam’s bus and watched as the band climbed aboard, each smiling at him. Tommy turned around as he got to half way up the steps and then spoke to Kris, “Ready to Rock out?” He smirked, and then continued up the steps and to his bunk.
Kris took a deep breath and then climbed aboard. “Whoa”, he found himself saying out loud. Brian, the keyboard player was directly behind him and snickered. “It’s pretty impressive, huh?”
“Yeah, it’s so… spacious.”
“Come on, I’ll give you a quick tour, since this will be your home for the next two months, too”, Brian urged him along and showed him all of the amenities that came on a tour bus. Once they got to the band quarters and introduced Kris again to everyone, they stopped short.
“What’s behind there?” Kris asked, pointing to another door.”
“Star quarters”, he winked.
“Oh”
“You want to see?”
“Oh, no… I’m sure he doesn’t want anyone on in there.”
“Nah, it’s cool”, Brian assured him and then knocked on the door. “Hey Rock Star, you in there?”
“Yeah man”, Kris could hear from the other side.
“Hey Adam”, Brian greeted his boss, affectionately. “This is Kris.”
“Oh right, I remember you from last night.” Adam’s head was down as he was finishing a text to his boyfriend and then he looked up to see big brown eyes.
“You do?” Kris’s eyes widened.
“Of course”, Adam stood up, and shook Kris’s hand. “Welcome to the crazy train”, he said, winking.
“Nice digs, man”, Kris tried sounding casual.
“Thank you, Kris”, Adam chuckled. “Let me show you around.”
Brian left quietly. He figured Kris could make it back to the front of the bus by himself.
Dave stuck his head in about twenty minutes later, just as Kris was getting a feel for the controls. “About ready to take off, alright everyone?” He directed mainly to Kris.
“Yup, I think I’ve got it under control, boss.”
“Good, you have the money maker with you”, he winked, giving Kris the shivers. No pressure or anything, he giggled to himself.
Dave closed the door behind him and went back to his own bus. Adam’s bus was always in the middle, so Kris waited till the one in front of him signaled he was taking off and then Kris followed behind.
The drive to the next venue was only four hours long, which was fine with Kris. It gave him time to get used to driving this contraption before having to pull an all-nighter. He didn’t see any of the band members for the entire trip, so it was kind of lonely, but Kris didn’t mind. He had turned on the radio and was singing softly to himself.
They pulled into the venue just around noon. Dave had arranged lunch to be delivered to the entourage upon arrival. Everyone stayed on their own bus, so Kris got to eat with the band. They were pretty cool to him, although Kris thought he heard Tommy say to Brian, “Totally his type”, and then snicker before Adam entered the dining area to stares.
“What, do I have something on my face?” He glared back, putting his phone back in his pocket.
“Trouble in paradise, Adam?”
“Everything’s fine”, he snapped, but then softened as he noticed Kris.
“What’s for lunch?” He asked as he sat down, eyeing the table of sandwiches. He grabbed a veggie pita and a soda and sat down between Tommy and Ashley. There was pleasant banter between the band and Kris felt a little out of place. That’s until Ashley began staring at Kris, tilting her head.
Kris felt his face turn beet red, and started coughing.
“You alright Kris?” Adam asked, really concerned.
“I’m sorry, Kris. I didn’t mean to stare. I just heard you singing earlier and was wondering why you’re driving a bus,” Ashley asked him.
That caused Tommy to choke too. “Ashley!” He reprimanded.
“What?”
“It’s alright”, Kris chuckled. “I’m home from college and needed a summer job.”
“Oh really? What are you studying in college?” The inquisitive bass player asked him.
“Music”
The band asked Kris a bunch of questions, but Adam was really quiet. After his lunch, the rock star took his phone out of his pocket again and getting up, he typed into the keyboard and walked back to his quarters.
“Is he alright?” Kris asked.
Tommy shrugged, “He’s got this boyfriend,” he rolled his eyes.
“Oh, I think I saw him last night.”
“Yeah, we don’t talk about him, makes everyone too angry.”
“Oh”
Dave boarded shortly after that, yelling towards the kitchen. “Sound check”
That was the band’s queue to get moving inside.
“How was the drive?” He asked Kris.
“Perfect”
“Good”, Dave said, patting him on the back. I suggest you get some rest, we’ll be leaving after the show and driving all night.”
Kris was a little disappointed. He’d hoped to see the show again tonight. Dave must have noticed his expression and added, “You’ll get to see some shows, Kris.”
“Oh, don’t worry about me”, Kris realized his mistake.
Dave called the gang again, this time walking through to Adam’s quarters. “Ready, Rock Star?” He announced, realizing that Adam was on the phone again.
“I gotta go, baby”, Adam apologized, reluctantly hanging up. “Sorry, Dave”
“Come on, buddy”, he encouraged, his boss and friend.
The band filed off the bus one by one, Adam in the rear. He noticed Kris on the way out and smiled at him.
“Have a great show,” Kris called out. Once he was alone, he took his duffle bag to the free bunk in the middle section of the bus and stowed his things in an empty drawer. After using the bathroom and brushing his teeth, Kris lay down on his bed and closed his eyes, thinking about the look on Adam Lambert’s face tonight. He looked sad.
~~~~
Kris woke up as the gang was boarding the bus after the show. Adam was still inside, showering and getting ready to meet the fans outside. Tommy and Brian were grabbing a beer first, and then heading outside as well. They’d all be another hour or so before it was time to leave.
That gave Kris a chance to fully wake up, use the restroom and then get ready to drive all night. He changed his clothes in the bathroom, brushed his teeth again, and then passing the kitchen, he stopped for a bottle of water and a left over sandwich from dinner.
By the time the band was back on the bus, Kris was in the driver seat, ready to go.
“Welcome back”, he greeted each one of them.
Adam was last to board. He looked more refreshed than the last time that Kris saw him. And, he seemed happier than before. Maybe it was meeting the fans.
“Have a good show, Adam?” Kris asked as the man boarded the bus.
“Hey, Kris; yeah, it was awesome. My fans give me such energy,” he spouted. “How was your evening?” He seemed genuinely interested.
“I slept”
“Oh”, he chuckled. “That’s good, right?”
“Everyone ready?” Dave had just boarded to announce takeoff. “We’re leaving in 5”, he told Kris.
Then he turned to Adam and they chatted for a minute before Dave walked off the bus and the Rock Star walked back to his lair and shut the door, reaching for his phone.
~~~~
Kris had been driving for a couple of hours. It was quiet in the back of the bus. The band had hung around in the kitchen for a while, winding down with some beers and talking to Kris, but then one by one, they went to their bunks for some shut eye.
Kris turned on the music in the front, to keep himself entertained and awake. He had a cooler beside him that was filled with cold water and sodas. He popped open a can of coke and took a long sip.
“Hey Kris”, he heard behind him. It was Adam.
“Hey Adam, shouldn’t you be asleep?”
“Insomnia”, he shrugged. “Mind if I sit with you?”
“Yeah, that’d be great. I was getting a little bored.”
“I heard you singing.”
“Oh, you did?”
“Yeah, you’re pretty good.”
“Thanks. I love to sing. I play guitar and piano too.”
They ended up talking for a couple of hours. Adam was good company. He was smart and funny and cute. Stop it Kris, he had to tell himself more than once. Did I mention, cute at hell? Kris wanted to ask him about his boyfriend, but thought that was probably too personal, so they kept it to music.
“I really loved your show the other night. I hope I get to see it again.”
“Thank you. I love performing. I love my fans…”
You love your boyfriend.
“So what do you want to do after college, Kris?”
He shrugged, “I don’t know for sure, but I was thinking that I might teach music or something.”
“Wouldn’t you rather be performing?” Adam couldn’t imagine doing anything else with his life.
“Yeah, maybe. I don’t know. I’m not like you.”
Adam chuckled, “No, but I’ve heard you, and your good.”
“Thanks, we’ll see. I like to write music, too.”
“Really?” Adam perked up. What kind of music do you write?”
After a while, Adam stood up. “I think I better try and get some sleep. Thanks for letting me keep you company.”
“I really enjoyed, it. Thank you, Adam.”
Adam laughed, “I like you, Kris. I’ll see you later?”
“I’ll be right here”, he said, giggling. Then Kris was left along with his thoughts. And, his thoughts were all about Adam. God, he was gorgeous; and sweet and smart... Stop it, Kris. Oh, shut up.
They pulled into the venue in Atlanta early the next morning. Kris went back to his bunk to get some shut eye before everyone had to be up for breakfast. He climbed up, trying not to disturb the others and then crawled under the covers, closing his eyes. His last thoughts before sleep took him were of Adam.
~~~~
“Breakfast time”, they all heard Dave walking through the bus. “Wake up, sleepy heads”, he chuckled.
Kris groaned. He wished he could ignore him and just stay in bed, but at that moment, Adam came walking through, looking absolutely gorgeous, Kris instantly woke up.
“Hi Kris”, Adam greeted him happily.
“Morning Adam”, Kris stretched, wishing he looked better when he woke up.
Tommy looked between the two of them and glanced over at Brian who was doing the same, then shrugged. Might be good for him.
Everyone filed out of the bus and met in the parking lot, while David herded them over to the entrance of the restaurant. He’d already called ahead and they were waiting for them. “It’s not fancy, but its good food”, he said of the IHOP.
“Ah man, I love this place”, Tommy said, excitedly. “Pancakes”
Brian snickered and Adam just shook his head. “Man, I wish I could eat like you.”
“Adam, you look amazing”, he told his boss.
Kris silently agreed.
After breakfast they got back onto the busses and drove over to the venue. They had some down time before lunch and sound check. Adam wanted to go shopping, so Dave got a van to take the star wherever he wanted to go. Kris watched him get in and secretly wished he could go with him, berating himself.
Kris soon realized that driving a bus wasn’t all that glamorous. He decided to make friends with the other two drivers and get the scoop. Neither of them had even seen one of Adam’s shows. They usually spent the day sleeping, getting gas and doing the band and crew’s laundry. Kris still thought it was a pretty good gig.
The band was in and out of the bus all day between lunch, sound checks and meet n greets, just going inside for breaks and to relax. Every time Adam got on the bus, he had his phone in his hand, usually texting his boyfriend and frowning.
Kris really wanted to ask him about him. Or at least take away his pain.
