Master ListBrotherly Love - Chapter 91
Brent and Chelsey finally left for school with a promise to come back for Adam’s play in a little over a month. Then after that, the next big event would be Chelsey’s college graduation. The whole family would drive out for that.
Kris took Adam back to school that evening. They both had early classes the next morning. “So, did you talk to Devon?” He asked.
“No, not yet. I wonder what that boy’s up to, though. I told him not to crush on straight guys”, Adam shook his head.
“Well, I want to hear all about it.”
“Come in for a while?”
They walked up to Adam’s dorm room. Tommy had just gotten back as well. “So, how was the beach?” He asked the couple.
“Great! Sorry about practicing with the band”, Adam apologized.
“It’s ok. We actually got together and played some”, he shrugged.
“That’s great. We should try for this weekend?”
“Yeah, definitely.”
Kris left a while later and then Tommy and Adam went to dinner. They walked through the line and got their food and then grabbed a table. “Tommy, look”, Adam nodded to a table three away.
“Mark and Roger?” Tommy asked.
“Yeah, their names are Kenny and Devon”, Adam corrected.
“So they’re friends? I didn’t think Kenny had any friends.” Tommy remembered how Kenny had treated Adam.
“I guess. I told you that Devon and Brad went out on a date, right?”
“No”, he said, chuckling. “That must have been interesting.”
“Well, let’s just say I think I created a monster.”
Tommy looked confused at Adam.
“It was his first sexual encounter”, he answered, like that explained everything.
Tommy didn’t really want him to elaborate, anyway. “So, Kenny’s gay? I would not have guessed that one at all.”
“I have no idea and neither does Devon, but I think he wants to find out”, he snorted.
“Ooh, that could turn out badly.”
“Yeah, but he’s a big boy, so…”
They spent the rest of the evening catching up and hanging out with their dorm friends. Apparently, they missed a huge party in New Orleans for Spring Break. “You have got to come next year, guys. The action was kickin”, one of the guys said. “Oh wait, both of you are taken, right? Too bad, boys”, he shook his head.
“And I don’t think you meant ‘my kind of action’ anyway”, Adam giggled.
“Are you kidding? There’s a whole drag scene there.”
“Oh?” He didn’t want to ask how he knew that.
The guy just shrugged, anyway. “What happens in New Orleans…” Both Adam and Tommy were slightly intrigued.
The next day, Adam finally saw Devon walking to his theatre class. “Devon”, he called.
“Hey Adam, how was your break?”
“Really good. Spent the week at the lake.” He didn’t want to ask, but was dying to know.
“Ok, Adam, I know you’re dying to know.”
“Can you read my mind now, Dev?” Adam chuckled.
“We’ve been hanging out.”
“You said that before”, Adam pointed to his cell phone.
“Right, well that’s pretty much it. He’s a nice guy, once you get to know him.”
“So, you’ve gotten to know him?”
Devon shrugged, “Yeah, I guess. I think that he’s really serious about acting, and he comes off like a jerk. ”
Adam didn’t want to mention the comment that he’d overheard during one of the early rehearsals. That’s why people thought he was a jerk. “Yeah, I guess.”
“Did you know that he’s moving to New York after graduation?”
Adam shook his head in answer to Devon’s question. “So, is he gay?”
“I don’t know. I mean, I didn’t kiss him or anything.”
“That’s probably good, Devon. If he’s not gay, he might punch you in the face”, Adam advised.
Devon shuddered, “I’m ok just being his friend.”
Hmm, Adam thought to himself.
“Well, I better run, Dev.”
“You know, he likes you”, Devon said before taking off.
“What?”
“Kenny likes you; thinks you’re a great singer and loves the way you play Angel”, Dev shrugged, “You should give him a break.”
“Yeah, I’ll try”, he smiled. “See you later, Devon.”
“Bye, Adam.”
~~~~
Adam texted Kris a few times during the day, but he couldn’t answer until he got out of school. “Hey Adam”, Kris called him while he was changing into his baseball uniform.
“I miss you.”
“Me too. I wish I could come over, but I have a game.”
“Where’s the game?” Adam asked, conjuring up an idea.
“It’s at home; six o’clock.”
Adam checked his watch. He and Tommy could make it. “Ok, you better go. Good luck, baby.”
“Yeah, thanks. Talk to you later.” Kris hung up wondering why Adam seemed in such a hurry to go. Then he finished getting dressed and went out to the field for practice.
Meanwhile, Adam found Tommy just outside their dorm. “So, want to go to a baseball game?”
Tommy laughed, “Kris?”
“Yeah”
“Ok, let’s grab something at the Snack Shack first and take it with us.”
“You’re the best, Tommy.”
They walked to the mini-restaurant on campus and ordered their sandwiches to go and then headed to Tommy’s car and drove to Conway High School. They got there a little early and sat in the stands eating dinner, waiting for the team to finish practicing.
Kris was walking off the field, looking up at the stands and did a double-take. “Adam?” He said, mostly to himself.
“What’s that, Kris?” Donald was walking next to him.
“I see Adam”, he smiled, pointing to the stands.
“You’re boyfriend?”
“Yeah, want to meet him?” Kris grinned.
“Uh, sure.”
Kris and Donald walked towards the bleachers, with Adam and Tommy walking down.
“Baby”, Adam greeted him.
“What are you doing here?” Kris asked, but he was all smiles.
“I wanted to surprise you.” Adam gave Kris a quick kiss on the lips.
“Thanks, Tommy.”
“You’re welcome, Kris”, Tommy winked.
“Oh, this is Donald, our new catcher”, Kris said; his arm around Adam’s.
“Hi Donald, it’s really nice to meet you. Kris has told me what a great catcher you are.”
“Well, he can’t stop talking about you”, Donald reached out his hand to shake Adam’s. “It’s really nice to meet you, too.”
They had to get to the dugout, so Adam and Tommy went back up to the top of the bleachers to finish eating and wait for the game to start. About fifteen minutes later, Adam heard familiar voices. “Mom?”
“Adam! Tommy! What a nice surprise”, she had hugs for both of them.
Ron came up behind her and hugged his boy as well. “You came to see Kris play”, he commented.
“Yeah, we were on the phone and he said it was a home game tonight, so here we are”, he grinned.
“I’m sure that Kris really appreciates it Adam.”
Pam had a cooler with her filled with food and drinks. “I made some sandwiches”, she told the boys.
“Thanks mom, but we already ate.”
“Well, at least have something to drink”, she said, handing them each a Gatorade, leaving the cooler open just in case...
Adam chuckled, “Thanks, mom.”
“You’re mom’s awesome”, Tommy whispered. Then, “I’ll have a sandwich, Mrs. Martin.”
“Here you go, Tommy”, Pam smiled, handing him a tuna on whole wheat.
“You’re like a bottomless pit”, Adam snorted.
“You’re mom makes the best sandwiches”, Tommy said, with his mouth full.
Adam shook his head. “Yeah, she does.” He mouthed, ‘Thanks, mom’, while she also handed him a sandwich.
“Oh look, Kris is coming out to the field”, Pam stood up and cheered for her boy.
Kris looked up, embarrassed, but completely overjoyed that his family was there to cheer him on. He smiled and waved, walking over to second base.
~~~~
The game was incredible. Kris had three hits and scored twice. Ethan pitched seven innings, only giving up two hits and no runs before sitting him down to rest. They beat Central High school with a score of 5-1.
Donald was a crack catcher; really talented. The team was lucky to have him. After the game, Kris introduced him to his parents.
“Nice job out there, boys”.
“Thanks, Dad.”
“Baby, I’m so proud of you.”
“Adam, we probably need to get back”, Tommy reminded him.
“Yeah, I’m sorry”, he said to his family.
“Adam, I’m so glad you came”, Kris hugged his boyfriend. “I’ll see you on Friday.”
“Ok, baby. Love you. Bye mom, dad.”
“Bye, Adam. We love you too. Thanks for coming too, Tommy.”
“My pleasure. Great to see you again, Martin family.”
Back in the car, Adam sighed.
“You have a great family, Adam”, Tommy was reading Adam’s thoughts.
“I really do”, he settled into his seat for the short drive back to school.
~~~~
The next day, the guys had rehearsal in the afternoon. Adam would finally see Kenny again after spring break. Maybe Devon was right; he could cut him some slack. He’d try.
Tommy and Adam walked to the auditorium after grabbing a bite to eat. It was a full rehearsal today; pit and all.
When they arrived, Devon was talking to Kenny. Adam walked over to greet them. “Hey Devon”, he said. “Kenny, how was your Spring Break?”
“Nice, thanks”, Kenny smiled weakly and then walked away, leaving Adam and Devon alone.
“What was that?” Adam asked.
“I think he feels uncomfortable.”
“See, I knew it. Devon, does Kenny know that you’re gay?”
He shrugged, “I don’t know. I never told him, but…”
“I don’t know, Dev. I don’t think he likes me because I’m gay. And I’m very open about it.”
“I told you, he does like you.”
“Then why do I make him uncomfortable?”
“I don’t think that’s why.”
“Humph”, Adam huffed as Justine came out and calling for everyone’s attention.
During rehearsal, Adam tried to assess Kenny’s behavior. He’d catch him glaring at him sometimes. Then other times, right After Adam’s numbers, Kenny would smile at him or give him a ‘thumbs up’. It was very confusing.
“Ok, once through, everyone.”
They ran through the entire play with no stopping. It was really coming along nicely. Afterwards, Adam got Tommy from the Pit and then left for dinner. He told Tommy what he noticed today. “Ya know Adam? I think you should just leave it alone.”
“I guess. Still bugs me.”
They grabbed a table at dinner and before long, a few of their friends joined them, including Isaac. “So, are we going to get together to play this weekend?” He asked both Adam and Tommy.
“Yes, definitely. Sorry about last week. Family vacation”, Adam said, apologetically.
“That’s cool, man. Family’s cool.”
By the time they were finished eating, Adam had all but forgotten about Kenny and Devon. They walked back to the dorm talking about music and the band possibly writing some new songs.
~~~~
The weekend couldn’t come faster for Adam. Rehearsal was just weird, now. Devon hung out with Kenny, or if he did come over to Adam, Kenny would just glare at him, and then he’d be all ‘fan girl’ after Adam’s songs. “Ugh.”
Adam told Kris about it on the phone that night. “Sounds like Kenny has a crush.”
“What?” Adam yelped. “On who?”
If Kris had been in the room, Adam would have seen his eyes roll. It was so obvious. Kenny has a crush on Adam.
“No way, Kris. He’s not even gay.”
“Ok, whatever Adam. I gotta run. See you tomorrow?”
“Yeah, baby. Love you. Good night.”
“Love you too.”
Adam went to bed thinking about the drama situation. Kenny was just weird. That’s all.
Kris picked Adam up on Friday afternoon and they went home for dinner. Tommy was going home too and would call them in the morning about rehearsal.
Pam made pot roast and they talked about Adam’s play. “I can’t wait to see it. I’ll bet you’re the best one, Adam.”
“Actually, we have an incredible cast.”
Kris was halfheartedly listening while fidgeting with his fork. “What’s wrong, baby?” Adam asked him, wondering if he was tired of hearing about RENT.
“Um, so something came up in school today and… well it’s that time of year and…”
“Kris, spit it out”, Adam urged.
“The Prom”, he blurted.
“Oh my God, your Junior Prom!” Pam beamed. “Oh Kris, this is so exciting.”
“Mom, I don’t know if Adam wants to go…”
“Why wouldn’t I want to go?” He asked, slightly hurt.
“You’re not in high school anymore. Maybe I just shouldn’t go.”
“Kris. You will not miss either one of your proms.” Adam demanded.
“You won’t feel uncomfortable?”
“Who are we going to sit with?”
“Allison, Lucy, Ethan, Cale”
“Have I ever felt uncomfortable around your friends?”
“No, I just didn’t know how you would feel.”
Adam took his hand and got down on one knee with a huge grin on his face. “Kris, would you go to your junior prom with me?”
Kris’s face gleamed with joy. He nodded furiously. “Yes. Thanks, Adam.”
“And don’t even think about trying to get out of your Senior Prom.”
“I won’t.”
“We need to go shopping for tuxes”, Pam squealed.
“Kris, this is your prom, I’ll wear whatever you want me to, baby.”
Adam sat back down at the table and they finished dinner. “Mom, that was delicious.”
“Thank you, Adam. Do you boys have plans for tonight?”
“No, I think we’ll just hang out here with you guys. We’re meeting the band tomorrow”, Adam explained.
Pam put her arm around Adam. “It’s good to have you home, sweetie.”
“Thanks, mom.”
